As Man City shake off their title hangover, talkSPORT’s Premier League season review continues. Part three features both Manchester clubs plus two surprise packages – Newcastle and Norwich. There are several stand-out candidates here. , the City supporte United.Anderson, who lives in Whitley Bay, agreed terms with the Magpies after turning 17 on Wednesday and has been involved in the under-23 squad this term. “I’m delighted to be signing a professional contract with Newcastle United,” the teenager ers’ 2011 Player of the Year has led by example once again, ‘s invention lit up the club’s early season charge while Yaya Toure is arguably the Premier League’s most complete midfielder since Patrick Vieira. Instead, we’re opting for Sergio Aguero, who scored twice on his debut against ea and adapted instantly to the English game during Carlos Tevez’s self-imposed absence. Aguero’s 22 league goals fired City to within touching distance of Premier League glory, but his superb 23rd against QPR on the final day of the season secured the trophy. It’s been a remarkable campaign for the Argentine.Granted, there have been a few lows, mostly in domestic and European cup competitions, but they are far outweighed by scintillating Premier League memories. Two moments spring to mind – the most recent, of course, when Sergio Aguero’s 94th minute winner against QPR snatched the title from Man United’s grasp in the most incredible, unforeseen circumstances. The other came back in October 2011 when City claimed an astonishing 6-1 victory at Old Trafford, inflicting the ‘ worst home defeat since 1955. Some of City’s fast-sweeping attacking movement that afternoon was simply too much for a Man United side completely blown away like never before under Sir .An historic triumph. City’s first English title in 44 years reduced their supporters to tears of joy, seconds before they wiped away tears of sorrow when witnessing what they thought would result in the most humiliating last day collapse against Premier League strugglers QPR. They underachieved in Europe given the strength of their squad and must find a way to prevent complacency seeping in after picking up just five domestic points out of 15 in March and April. worked wonders after shelving retirement plans to return for Man United in January, while Johnny Evans was superb during ‘s untimely injury lay off. Once again, though, it was who dragged Man United through games they had no right to win, dropping deep to link up with midfielders, surging forward to bag a mind-boggling 34 goals in all competitions and setting the example with his tremendous work rate. England’s best player this year by some distance.A below par season yielded no silverware for the first time in seven years at Old Trafford. There were, by Sir Alex’s high standards, far more lows than highs yet one afternoon did offer early promise for a team destined to fall flat in the Premier League title run-in. It arrived on bank holiday weekend on August 2011 when United stunned Arsenal and by hammering his 8-2.A season to forget for Man United. Dumped out of Europe in the group stages for only the third time in 17 years, knocked out of the FA Cup in the fourth round by bitter rivals and pipped to the Premier League title in cruel fashion by mega rich neighbours Man City. United had their hands on the trophy following their 1-0 win at , but City’s late, late show against QPR meant the title was quite literally gone in 60 seconds. In 2011, scored 14 goals in his first 17 league games for Newcastle then in the new year dropped a little deeper to accommodate new arrival Papiss Demba Cisse, who bagged 13 goals in his first 12 outings. As a result we’re allowing these two Senegal internationals the honour of sharing an award. What a lethal partnership.Beating both Chelsea and Liverpool by two goals would ordinarily represent season highs for a Newcastle team languishing in the Championship two years ago. Not this time, though. Four days into 2012, the Magpies stunned Man United with a dominant home showing and a couple of stunning goals from Demba Ba and and a last minute own goal from helped Newcastle to a 3-0 victory. It reignited hopes of European football on T interest in taking charge of Arsenal midseason.Goal says former Juventus coach Allegri doesn’t want to return to management until next summer at the earliest. That rules out the Italian replacing Emery at the Emirates if Arsenal sack the Spaniard in yneside and dented Man United’s title dreams.Newcastle were tipped to struggle this term, but came within a whisker of Champions League qualification – quite remarkable considering the lack of support his appointment received last season. Holding on to the ‘s best players and making another three or four shrewd acquisitions this summer might just secure those Champions League aspiration next season. For now, Europa League football is a big step in the right direction for a refreshingly cash savvy club.Cries of ‘Holt of England’ have reverberated around Carrow Road all season and why not? The 31-year-old, who was playing for in League Two during the 2008/09 campaign has notched 15 top flight goals for the , second only behind Wayne Rooney as the league’s top English marksman. An England call may be beyond the bullying striker, but he’s played a huge part in consolidating Norwich’s Premier League status.Arriving at White Hart Lane following a draw with and away defeat to , the yellow army of travelling support dreamt rather than expected three points against a side chasing Champions League football. But Norwich matched Harry’s boys from start to finish and it was ‘s unstoppable 66th minute strike that sealed a 2-1 victory in April.A remarkable year for Norwich. Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay has hailed the “phenomenal perfomance” of the club’s players in Tuesday night’s epic encounter with Barcelona. The Blues snatched a 2-2 draw with the Catalan giants at the Nou Camp, despite having captain sent off in the first half, to seal a 3-2 aggregate win and a place in the Champions League final.Real Madrid or Bayern Munich await in the final in May and Gourlay admits the stunning victory over last year’s champions is a huge boost to the club’s coffers.”It inager Frank Lampard. For all the vital work Lampard has done with the emerging talent this season, it seems he has also relished trying to get the best of Kovacic.”It’s been nice, nice of course,” Kovacic told the club’s website.”Now I see why he was s a phenomenal performance because not many pCrystal Palace. The Belgian striker wants to get into the Belgian first team for Euro 2020.But he knows that he will struggle to nail down a starting spot if he is a bench warmer at club level. He scored two goals for his national team against Cyprus ieople gave us a chance,” said Gourlay, speaking to the club’s official website.”Going 2-0 down, it made it seem as if things were not going our way but the guys dug in fantastically well and I am very proud of the performances.”To find ourselves in the final has given the club a fabulous lift, and the fans as well. Financially, as well, it is a big boost for the club.”It helps us continue our investment in the team as we go forward but we still have the challenge of making sure we are in this competition next year, and that is very important.”
Some poor recent results for Liverpool have led some people to complain that Anfield’s favourite son is escaping the criticism that dogged his predecessor, Roy Hodgson, thanks to the former’s past achievements. While no one, least of all Dalglish, wouldn’t accept that Liverpool should have more points on the board at this stage of the season, a little perspective is needed when assessing how the club is progressing during his second spell in charge. The stats above show that King Kenny has improved ‘s fortunes in the Premier League since taking over, lifting the club from mid-table mediocrity to genuine Champions League place challengers again. That may seem the limit of Liverpool’s ambitions, but how many times in the past 22 years have the actually pushed for more than a top four place?Yes, Dalglish has spent more money than though it should not be forgotten that the Scot has also lowered the club’s wage bill and sold under-performing players to the tune of £74.5m.Dalglish also stands on the brink of taking Liverpool to their first Wembley final in 16 years, while Hodgson oversaw a depressing defeat to League Two at Anfield in the same competition. While Liverpool have struggled to score goals under Dalglish, they were similarly poor in front of goal under the management of Hodgson and, crucially, with the Scot in charge the quality of footba Dembele has no regrets digging in his heels at Barcelona this summer.Barca wanted to use the World Cup winner in a swap to bring Neymar back to the club from PSG. But Dembele refused to be part of the exchange, despite pressure from club directors. All played by the Reds has arguably improved greatly from the tactics employed by his predecessor.Liverpool aren’t as good as they hope to be, but progression takes time.Just over a year ago, Dalglish took over at short notice from Hodgson, 24 hours before the Reds faced Man United at Old Trafford in the FA Cup, with most Kopites fearing an embarrassing thumping if Woy remained in charged. A ten-man Liverpool lost 1-0 that day ster City manager Pep Guardiola says he’d be nothing without his players.Guardiola was speaking in defence of his squad after Saturday’s shock loss to Norwich City.”They gave me all the prestige I have in England, when the first season when it was Frand this Saturday they face the same opposition in the fourth round, on this occasion at Anfield, with every expectation that they can beat their old foes. With English clubs banned from European football in 1985/86, the Screensport Super Cup was held for those clubs who would have qualified for continental competition. Only problem was, no one cared and attendances were terrible (7,000 at for their semi final with ). The final itself – between and Everton – took place a season late. It was never staged again.Another tournament created after the European ban, the Full Members Cup (for clubs from the top two divisions, or ‘full members’ of the Football League) excluded the teams playing in the Screensport Super Cup. So that meant none of the good teams in England played in it. Great idea! It limped on until 1992 under various guises, until the onset of the Premier League killed it off. Younger Chelsea fans may find it hard to believe, but the Blues’ wins in this tournament, in 1985 and 1990, were joyous occasions for Stamford Bridge. Remember that next time you’re moaning about not winning the Champions League. Not to be confused with the equally crappy Anglo-Italian Cup (sample final: v Ascoli), the Anglo-Italian League Cup came about when won tJuventus have announced a three-year extension of their partnership with Linglong Tire, reports, /.The deal will see the China-based company continue as the Serie A club’s official global tyre partner until 2022.Linglong, which first teamed up with Jhe League Cup in 1969 but, as a Third Division team, were refused entry into European competition. Two more editions of the Anglo-Italian League Cup were played with League Cup winners taking part, with a further two matching up the FA Cup winners and their Italian counterparts. Napoli beat 4-1 in the 1976 contest, then it was arrivederci Anglo-Italian League Cup. Don’t come back!Speaking of cups for cup winners, the memorably named, er, Cup Winners’ Cup was unsurprisingly a trophy for winners of their national knockout tournament. It lasted for 39 years from 1960 and British clubs – who always took domestic cups more seriously than their continental neighbours – won it a record 10 times. Actually, we rather liked this trophy!Another competition for British clubs that hadn’t qualified for Europe, the Anglo-Scottish Cup ran from 1975 until 1981. Considering four out of the six finals were all-English affairs, it was a bit disappointing on the Anglo-Scottish front. beat Notts County 2-1 in the last final, but Notts could at least look forward to Anglo-Italian glory against Ascoli in 1995.The Watney Cup’s biggest claim to fame was being responsible for the first penalty shoot-out to be held in England, between and Man United in 1970, in which George Best took the first kick. A pre-season tournament, the Watney Cup was contested by the top scoring teams in all four English divisions from the previous season. The 1972 final was, of course, a 0-0 draw. The Intertoto Cup was a summer tournament that began its life back in 1961, but it wasn’t until 1995 that UEFA took control of it. UEFA decided, in its wisdom, that the Intertoto would be a brilliant way to help teams who hadn’t qualified for Europe properly to have another bite at the cherry. This meant teams starting the next season almost as soon as they finished the previous one, playing for a Mickey Mouse cup. Bizarrely, the Intertoto also featured three finals, allowing , and Aston to ‘win’ it, although no trophy was awarded (they got a commemorative plaque – says it all).Mercifully, UEFA President Michel Platini realised the Intertoto was a load of tosh and scrapped it as soon as he could.Held in the early weeks of the 1988/89 season to celebrate 100 years of the Football League, the top eight teams from the previous season met on a knockout basis for the Mercantile Credit Centenary Trophy. beat 2-1 in the final at Villa Park – rarely can a cup final between these two clubs have meant so very, very little. At a time when English fans were starved of top class European football, ‘the Makita’ at first seemed exotic and exciting. Inaugurated in August 1988, it saw Arsenal and Spurs take on that season’s European Champions AC Milan and Bayern Munich at Wembley. The following year Arsenal and Liverpool staged a rematch of their dramatic 1989 title decider, in addition to matches with Porto and Dynamo Kiev. From then on Arsenal seemed to be in it every year, along with Sampdoria, as it was downgraded from Wembley to Highbury. When English clubs returned to proper European competition in 1990, everyone realised the Makita was just a pre-season friendly and lost interest. Its legacy appears now to be the EmiLazio later today.”If I had seen a dead team, I would have come out here and told you,” he said at a press conference. “I see a great desire, but we need a great run to climb the table.“This club can’t have a position like this, we have great valrates Cup, aka the only trophy Arsenal win these days. When the British Home Championship was discontinued in 1984, England and Scotland couldn’t face the fact that they wouldn’t play the Auld Enemy once a year, nor be able to go on the rampage in Glasgow or London. Thus, the Rous Cup was born, named after the former FA and FIFA President, Sir Stanley Rous. In 1987 the Rous Cup was expanded to include a guest South American team, with first Brazil, then Colombia and Chile taking part in later years. The 1989 match between England and Chile was watched by just 15,628 – the worst ever attendance for an England match at Wembley. Bye bye Rous Cup.Tottenham Hotspur proudly list the Ipswich Hospital Charity Cup on their list of official honours, which they jointly ‘won’ after drawing 2-2 with in 1952. You can bet that Sir won’t retire until he’s added this illustrious honour to his list of triumphs. Resurrect it now!

Possibly the most unlucky manager ever to be sacked, Vicente Del Bosque got the bullet from the Bernabeu 48 hours after winning La Liga with Real Madrid in 2003. Not only that, but in four years at the helm Del Bosque had won two European Cups, another La Liga title, the World Club Cup and European Super Cup. That’s gratitude! After sacking Del Bosque, Real endured their worst trophy drought for 50 years, while he went on to win the World Cup with Spain.England boss Fabio Capello was the man who ended Real’s trophy drought when he guided them to the Spanish title in 2007, but he was sacked because they didn’t win in a pleasing-enough style. “We’ve laid the foundations,” said president Ramon Calderon, “But we need to find a more enthusiastic way of playing.” Which is obviously why they hired Jose Mourinho to take on Barcelona.Mourinho may be the only man who could keep his job at Real Madrid, despite ‘only’ winning the Spanish Cup in his first season, but the Special One was given the heave-ho from Stamford Bridge after achieving tremendous success. A first title for Chelsea in 50 years was followed by a second, then a cup double in his final full season at the Bridge, but that wasn’t enough for Mr Abramovich. Three years later Carlo Ancelotti led Chelsea to their first ever League and Cup double, but was sacked 12 months later after finishing second to Man United and losing to the same opposition in the Champions League last eight. In his first season at Bayern Munich, Dutch coach Van Gaal took them to a German league and cup double, as well as the Champions League final. None of which was enough to save him from the sack less than a year later when Bayern slipped out of Europe in the last 16 and fell off the pace at home.
