Genuine wing-backs and a focus on attack – why Sheffield United could be one of the most interesting teams to watch

content_img

data-js=”article-body” data-insert-mobile-adslot>

The cliches in Sheffield United’s were all there if you wanted to look for them: a club who hpeaking to L’Equipe, agent Seran Diabate has praised his cilent and played down previous fears about his fitness. He said of the on-loan Monaco fullback: “Djibril has taken his trouble with patience, with the objective of showing his qualities when weave spent the past 12 years in the wilderness, battening down the hatches away from home and grabbing a point with almost their only clear chance of the game.

Is this what we can expect for the remaining 37 games of the Sheffield United season? Seasoned observers of Chris Wilder’s team will answer with an emphatic “no”.

Wilder’s team drew lots of neutral admirers last season, not just because of the “sleeping giant wakes up” narrative but also due to their innovative tactical approach.

Most spoken about has been the inventive movement of the three-man central defence, which, coupled with genuine wing-backs, offers an unusual challenge for opponents.

The dangers of this based on Saturday’s evidence are that they themselves looked vulnerable down the flanks, with Bournemouth also opting for a three-man central defence and wing-backs – with Adam Smith, in particular, having plenty of joy down the right side in the first half.

But Oliver Norwood provided discipline at the base of the midfield and David McGoldrick did an excellent job of providing an attacking focal point so that no one player ever appeared too isolated. It remains to be seen how flexible Wilder can be and how quickly opponents can work them out.

But it was through one of their wing-backs, George Baldock, that the chance came to earn a dramatic point on their Premier League return after all had looked lost following Chris Mepham’s goal for Bournemouth.

Baldock pressed forward, s League qualification.Sarri’s team are at home against Watford on Sunday as they try to secure fourth place in the Premier League and return to the Champions League next season. There would also be another cup final on the horizon if they can finish crossed low for Ollie McBurnie who could not convert, but Billy Sharp did so with the rebound ensuring a memorable day for him and the club.

“Maybe it was written in the stars. All my family were down and to get the first Sheffield United goal in the Premier League after 12 years, it’s something I’ll never forget and I’m just glad it meant something to the club,” said the 33-year-old Sheffield-borntract in June and already has fielded interest from keen clubs.ESPN says Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, Manchester United and Napoli are all interested.Indeed, these four clubs have regularly made attempts for Cavani in recent years, but without ever United fan. “I’m disappointed I didn’t start but he [Wilder] knows that and we’ve got five good strikers at the club now so I think it is going to chop and change at the top of the pitch.”

When relegated from the Premier League, Sheffield United scored just eight goals in their 19 away league games and signed three attackers this summer – Callum Robinson, Lys Mousset and Ollie McBurnie – breaking their transfer record on each occasion.

“We’ve got to score goals,” said Wilder. “Our recruitment this year was based on that at the top of the pitch. We’ve signed some good players all over the pitch to give it balance and strength and competition but we wanted goals in us. Can they score in the Premier League? We feel they are natural goal scorers and people talked about Billy – can he score in the Premier League? He’s had 10 minutes on the pitch and scored. Will that continue? Who knows.”

There is a sense of togetherness about the club which is perhaps untypical of the corporate, social media led communication of most present day Premier League organisations.

The team were mobbed by fans as they walked past a pub in Bournemouth on the morning of the game, something that Wilder says is not unusual or unwelcome.

“I remember going to Marbella a couple of years ago and us being on a coach and the supporters have just appeared from nowhere, about 500 or 600 of them, surrounding the bus. There’s an obvious connection between the supporters and the players and there has to be, this club has been at its best when there has been,” said Wilder.

Bills Today: A bigger role for Justin Hunter?

content_img

Here’s the Bills news of note for Nov. 29th

All he’s done since joining the Bills is catch touchdowns. Of his seven receptions for Buffalo this season, four of Justin Hunter’s catches have gone for scores including last Sunday’s game winner in the fourth quarter.

“I think so,” said Ryan of more playing time for Hunter. “All he does is catch touchdowns. I remember that quote. Just like we had T-D Mike (Gillislee), now we’ve got TD Hunter, touchdown Hunter. He gives us a huge red zone threat, but also I think he does warrant more playing time. With some ofity to sign Lloyd Kelly, who joined Bournemouth from Bristol City earlier this week. The Sun claims Liverpool have moved their sights towards Leeds United teenager Leif Davis. The 19-year-old made only four Championship appearances this season but has the injuries we have there’s no reason he shouldn’t be able to play more.”

Robert Woods is still dealing with by coach Quique Setien.Setien replaced Ernesto Valverde at the turn of the year.”Honestly, after seeing the last few Barcelona matches, I haven’t seen any improvement since they sacked Valverde and brought in Setien,” he admitted. ‘With the great pla knee injury suffered in Week 11 and Walt Powell exited Sunday’s game with an ankle injury. Percy Harvin is dealing with debilitating migraine headaches that kept him out of the Jaguars game. That leaves the team with four healthy receivers in Hunter, Marquise Goodwin, Brandon Tate and Sammy Watkins.

Through the first half of the season the Bills had a top five red zone defense. Through the first six games of the season Buffalo allowed just six touchdowns on 18 red zone possessions by their opponents, good for just a 33 percent success rate to rank first in the NFL.

In the last five games however, the success rate for opponents has skyrocketed to 81 percent (13-16), with the last three opponents a perfect eight for eight scoring touchdowns once theala remains high on Manchester United’s shopping list.Tuttosport says United are willing to reopen negotiations to sign Dybala from Juve.United failed to sign the Argentine in the summer window but remain on the hunt for a new forward after selling Ry reached Buffalo’s 20-yard line. The Bills now rank 19th in red zone defense.

So what gives?

“That’s an area in particular that we have to get better at,” said Ryan. “We’ve already studied where we’re failing in the red zone and I think we’re amongst the leaders in the league from the 20 all the way down to the five-yard line, but it’s when we get inside the five-yard line they’ve scored 12 times on 22 plays. So that’s a huge area of concern.”

Buffalo’s defensive staff is already devising ways to improve their performance in goal line situations, and it hasn’t all been short yardage runs. Two weeks ago at Cincinnati, Andy Dalton scored on a two-yard run outside the tackle box, but he also threw a one-yard fade to the corner for their other red zone score to go two-for-two against the Bills.

“There are some things to look at obviously,” said Ryan. “Everybody runs the same call down there we just have to get better playing down there. That’s an area where you can’t focus a whole lot, but that area right there is killing us. So we have to do some internal things down there so we can get better there.”

“I wish we knew, but that’s when you’ve got to be at your best to stop them, but unfortunately we have given up quite a few of those, two back to back this past game,” said Ryan. “You’ve just got to line up and play every play and find a way to get them off the field. That was the thing that was disappointing to me (Sunday).”

Ryan felt the defense was particularly hurt by the read option keepers and scramble runs by Jaguars QB Blake Bortles. He was Jacksonville’s leading rusher with 81 yards on eight carries to average better than 10 yards per rush. Bortles converted two third downs for the Jaguars with his legs.

“I thought we had some calls set up to give our coverage a chance and the quarterback makes some big runs on us to convert third downs,” said Ryan. “Those are killers. I’ve mentioned how that can be frustrating for the defense when you have them all covered up and then the quarterback makes a play. Now we know how other teams feel when they play us because Tyrod does the same thing. We’ve got to balance up the rushing lanes and not let these quarterbacks take off on us.”

Fortunately for the Bills, Oakland QB Derek Carr, doesn’t run with nearly the success that Bortles has this season. He’s averaged less than two yards per carry.

Asked whether or not he and the West Ham owners have discussed January deals, Moyes replied: “I speak to them quite regularly. We’d like to add to the squad if we can and in the position in the table that we are we’ll need to.

“But finding the right players and looking for them is a bit different. Sometimes the ones you might want are not available at this time. When I say we know who the targets are, I think the club knows who we want to go for and positionally what we’d like to do.

“I think what changes is if you go for your target and you can’t get him, what do you do? You’ll have to look for another target. Hopefully we’ll have two or three in consideration.”

“Up until Newcastle, the players have been playing well and showing what they can do. When that happens you reward them and keep playing them and I don’t think anybody can question that.

“But I do know what Andy Carroll and Chicharito’s qualities are. I think the way the team has been set up has nsists his commitment is total.Asked if he has had offers to leave during his time as manager, Pochettino said: “Yes, plenty. From everywhere. Daniel [Levy] knows.”He added: “Daniel knows very well our commitment to the club is massive. It is more thbeen better suited to the quicker boys playing up front. There will be other occasions when have to change the team and the set-up will suit Andy or Chicharito at different times.”

The 39-year-old will pass his Uefa Pro Licence in time for the start of next season and has made it clear that his dream job would be to manage Arsenal.

#21 – Will Gilmore be a difference maker as a rookie?

content_img

Every summer leading up to training camp Buffalobills.com asks 25 of the most pressing questions facing the team as they make their final preparations for the upcoming regular season. With Year 3 under head coach Chan Gailey and veteran player report day at St. John Fisher fast p.Minamino picked up the language over the past four years he’s spent at RB Salzburg in Austria. And the Japan international says his ability to speak with Klopp with help his transition at Anfield when arrives on January 1.”I’m looking forward to worapproaching, here is the latest daily installment as we closely examine some of the answers the Buffalo Bills have to come up with between July 24th and Sept. 9th.

Players selected in the first round of the NFL draft are expected to be instant contributors, if not starters heading into their first professional season. Some first round picks come in and simply contribute, but others become game changers for their team in year one. Bills first round draft choice Stephon Gilmore could eamed Salah. The former AC Milan star is widely regarded as one of the greatest fullbacks of all time. But even he thinks it would be difficult to prevent Egypt international Salah from causing damage.”Salah is an amazing player, his best quality is thaasily be a steady role player, but can he be a game changing starting cornerback this season?

Gilmore has already been lining up as one of the starting outside cornerbacks during both OTAs and mini-camp. He has been very impressive to this point and the team’s number one wide receiver has taken notice.

Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has now had a chance to get a good look at the rookie during team drills. He is not shy about saying what Gilmore is capable of becoming, but does caution that it is still early in the process.

“I think Gilmore is going to be a great player,” said Fitzpatrick. “He’s done some good things so far and we’re not in pads yet.”

Players will have to wait until training camp to put on the pads, but based on firsts planning for a lucrative career swansong in China. That’s according to Okdiario’s chief pundit Eduardo Inda, while speaking on El Chiringuito.Inda insists Messi has no immediate plans to quit Barca, but does have an ambition to play in the Chinese P impressions, head coach Chan Gailey is very impressed with what he has witnessed from the rookie cornerback.

“He has done really an excellent job,” said Gailey. “Everything that we have asked him to do, to pick up, to adjust to—he has handled it so well. He is very mature beyond his years.”

His physical play and style have also been apparent this offseason, which should only help when the pads do go on. It is very difficult for some corners to play this kind of physical brand, but Gailey sees it as just a normal element to his game.

“It is something that I think is very natural for him,” Gailey said. “Some guys have to learn how to feel a receiver. I think he has instincts in that regard of understanding what great receivers (do).”

Gilmore has always believed in his abilities and he feels like there are no limitations to what he can accomplish this year.

“I always play with confidence,” said Gilmore. “So I think that comes with me and if I just keep learning the sky is the limit.”

This kind of confidence made it easy for scouts and upper management to gravitate to a player like Gilmore during the draft process. General Manager Buddy Nix continues to be nothing but impressed with how Gilmore handles himself and he believes that the rookie can be a difference maker for this team.

“From what I’ve seen I’d say he definitely can,” said Nix. “He’s done more than we thought he’d do with what we’ve exposed him to. So nothing surprises him. He’s a very patient guy. He doesn’t bite on every move. He’s smart and has deceiving strength and great speed.”

Gilmore will likely start at corner and serve as a game changer on a defense that is already loaded with playmakers. The Bills first round pick will benefit from a much improved pass rush, which will only provide the secondary with more playmaking opportunities. It will also allow the corners to take more risks than usual because quarterbacks will be in a hurry to release the football. The early praise from teammates and coaches illustrates how much talent and potential Gilmore has as a player.

Greer torn with free agency approaching

content_img

Free agency is often seen as a jackpot opportunity for players that have made the most of their first four or five years in the league. Even players say you work hard every day and perform every week for your second contract. For Jabari Greer it will be different.

The Bills starting cornerback, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, has already had a second contract. After signing with the Bills as an undrafted rookie in 2004, his rookie deal wase talks with Fifa and Real Madrid about funding rival global club competitions, according to the Financial Times. The business newspaper reports that CVC is in discussions with soccer’s global governing body about acquiring the commercial rights to th up after the 2006 season. Greer went untendered by the Bills as a restricted free agent, but was eventually re-signed to a modest two-year pact.

This offseason Greer will sign his third contract after maximizing his pure talent with rigorous offseason training and learning from the experience 26 NFL starts can provide.

“I’ve gained that experience and become a better player,” said Greer. “So I now have the maturity and know how to play the game and how to study and how to take care of my body. I’ve taken that step up and I feel like there are a lot more steps that I’m still going to take.”

But the step into free agency is a different one. One that was much different from the last time he was not under contract. Coming out of the 2006 season Greer was a sub-package cornerback. He had yet to hold down a starting role on defense. The jury was out.

Now two years lar victory over Finland. The Azzurri won their Euro qualifier 2-1 through a Lazio striker Ciro Immobile goal and a Jorginho, of Chelsea, penalty.”There was a little bit of suffering, but we created it ourselves. We were dominating the game and gave awater with a pair of interception returns for touchdowns this season and solid performances against high profile receivers like Terrell Owens on his resume, Greer figures to be a hot commodity on the open market.

“I hope that’s what they say when they see me,” said Greer. “The funny thing is I know those plays and those plays feel good, but I’m worrying about the interception I missed against Jacksonville. And those plays are motivating for me when it comes time to conquer the offseason and know when there’s opportunity you’ve got to grab it.”

The opportunity rsenal caretaker manager Freddie Ljungberg’s staff. The former Gunners captain has been working as an agent in recent years. But The Sun claims Gilberto could come in and help Ljungberg pick up the pieces after Unai Emery was sacked.Silva still lives ithat could be coming his way in the offseason is a big pay day if the Bills elect not to re-sign him prior to the opening of free agency in March.

A week ago cornerback Corey Webster was re-signed to a five-year deal worth a reported $43.5 million with $20 million guaranteed. It’s not unrealistic to think in an open market Greer, with comparable career numbers, could command as much.

Being heavily invested in top pick Leodis McKelvin, and with the contracts of Terrence McGee and Ashton Youboty set to expire after the 2009 season, it’s hard to definitively say what the Bills will do at the cornerback position.

“That’s the business aspect of the game,” said Greer. “Unfortunately it’s like that, but you also have a chance to do what’s best for your family. And that’s what I want to do. I’m not money hungry, but at the same time you have to take care of your own.”

On the positive side Greer has respect for the organization that took a chance on him and a good relationship with Bills COO Russ Brandon, who played a large role in landing him as an undrafted rookie free agent after the 2004 draft was over.

“I think they know where my heart is and that whatever happens and whatever business negotiations go on that I’ll always be thankful for the opportunity I got here,” said Greer. “There’s a difference between loyalty and self interest and I want them to know that as long as the opportunity is here I’m going to be here. But if the opportunity is someplace else then I have to do what’s best to provide for my family.”

If that opportunity does prove to exist elsewhere, Greer knows moving on will be difficult when he thinks of his teammates.

“That’s the toughest thing,” he said. “The relationships that you establish in this locker room. I know when everything is said and done there are guys in this locker room that will be with me for the rest of my life. They understand what I’m up against. I don’t want to speculate on what might happen, but whatever happens I know that I’ll have the support of my teammates.”

The road hasn’t been easy for Greer in carving out a career for himself. From undrafted rookie, to special teams contributor, to sub-package defensive back to proven starter Greer has steadily climbed the ladder. And there will be a reward for that. But for once Greer is content with sitting back and letting that reward come to him.

“My mom always told me, ‘Jabari, what’s yours is yours and nobody can ever take that away from you.’ Not only when they drafted Leodis or they brought in Will (James) in the offseason. There have been so many things that have been stacked against me. Through it all she’s always told me what’s meant for you is meant for you. So what’s meant for me in the future in this game is going to be for me. If it’s meant for me to be one of those guys that’s blessed with the ability to provide for my family then it’s going to happen. And I hope it does.”

No one knows football like Tierney. The veteran sportswriter, whose work has appeared in The New York Times and Los Angeles Times, has covered of all levels for decades. And that expertise has been evident since he joined SportsLine in 2017. Since the start of the 2017 season, he has gone 136-114 with his against the spread picks in college football. Anyone who has followed him is way up. Now, he has analyzed San Diego State vs. Fresno State from every possible angle and locked in another confident against the spread pick. .

Through nine games, the Aztecs have held every opponent below its season point and total offense averages. They rank eighth in the country in both scoring defense (14.4 points per game) and total defense (277.1 yards per game).

But just because the Aztecs may have the edge on paper does not guarantee they will cover the San Diego Stxis Claude-Maurice from Lorient. The Geordies join Arsenal, West Ham and Sevilla in the hunt for the Ligue 2 man, says the Arsenal-Alexis-Claude-Maurice-Lorient” target=”_blank”>Daily Star.Claude-Maurice scored 14 goals in 16 Ligue 2 appearances last ate vs. Fresno State spread on Friday.

The Bulldogs have scored at least 30 points in four straight games. Only seven other teams in the country have a longer streak of scoring 30 points than Fresno State. Much of the success can be attributed to an improved rushing attack, as over the last four games, the Bulldogs have averaged 223.5 rushing yards per game (6.3 per carry) and scored 18 touchdowns.

In addition, Fresno State has enjoyed recent success against the Aztecs. The Bulldogs have won the last two meetings between the teams by a combined score of 50-17. The last time these teams met in San Diego, in 2017, Fresno State whipped the Aztecs, 27-3.

We can tell you Tierney is leaning over, but his much stronger play is on the spread. He’s found a critical x-factor that makes one side of the spread hit hard on Friday. He’s sharing what it is, and who to back, only at SportsLine.

Landing No. 1 seed drastically improves LSU’s College Football Playoff title chances, projection model shows

jumped above to the No. 1 spot in the final Playoff rankings that were released on Sunday, which earned them a game against No. 4 rather than No. 3 . The debate on which top team would avoid facing Clemson was one of the more intriguing storylines on Sunday morning and statistics suggest that the Tigers are far more likely to win the national championship now than they were heading into championship weekend.

Stephen Oh, the principal data engineer for SportsLine, crunched the numbers and determined the simulated percentage to win the national championship based on the matchups and computer-generated statistics.

Why is there such a big gap between LSU and the field? The matchup vs. the Sooners is the biggest reason.

“The odds-makers agree that facing Oklahoma is a huurprised fullback Charlie Taylor is attracting transfer interest.Taylor has been linked with Leicester City this week.”I think he is a very good player,” Dyche told LancsLive. He added: “We want players to develop here regardless of contracts but whenge benefit to LSU,” Oh said. “A week ago LSU was 3/1 to win the championship so the’s enjoying his partnership with Fred. The pair were impressive for victory over Tottenham last night.McTominay told MUTV: “He’s such a nice guy and we have that connection on the pitch, and it’s just a pleasure to play alongside him. We’re getting eir implied percentage improved from 25% to 41.7%.”

That’s quite the jump considering Clemson rolled in the ACC Championship Game and Ohio State overcame a sluggish start to run away from in the Big Ten Championship Game. Of course, some of that jump was caused by LSU’s win over then-No. 4 in the SEC Championship Game. But it’s a stretch to say that the win over the Bulldogs caused that much of a move.

Another interesting nugget is that Oklahoma’s simulated chances only went up 0.4% despite and both beGunnar Solskjaer lacks leaders in his side.Fletcher was speaking after Solskjaer’s young United outfit were put to the sword by Manchester City in the first-leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final at Old Trafford.Speaking after the 3-1 defeat, Fletcher sing in the mix last week.
