Frank Lampard makes no excuses after Bournemouth condemn Chelsea to fourth league defeat in five

content_img

data-js=”article-body” data-insert-mobile-adslot>

rank Lampard was not in the mood for excuses after watching hiss, which is quickly eating away at what had been a healthy top-four cushion.

Lampard could easily have joined the group of managers who have pointed at the Video Assistant Referee following defeats. He could have questioned the atmosphere inside Stamford Bridge that often seems flat on a Saturday afternoon. He might also have blamed physical and mental fatigue his young players might be suffering.

But Lampard was having none of it. He sympathised with the supporters who had been waiting for a moment of magic that never came and he told his players that they need to show some “balls” when teams like West Ham United, Everton and now Bournemouth set up to make life difficult for them.

All three clubs had been struggling for form and confidence before facing Chelsea and yet all three beat Lampard’s team. and an injury list that grew to 10 players, when Joshua King was forced off.

King had three times threatened to go through on Chelsea’s goal before being replaced, but Dan Gosling managed to find an unlikely late winner for the visitors that was awarded by VAR following a lengthy check.

here was no booing at the final whistle, just as there had been very little in the way of energy from the stands at the start, but Lampard said: “I don’t blame the fans. I’m a Chelsea man and I will be the first one to say the fans were flat today and we needed them. But today I’m never going to say that because if I’m a fan sitting there today, I’d also say ‘pfft, too slow. Centre back to centre back, full back with the manner of victory over Norwich City on the weekend. The Blades are back at Bramall Lane this weekend for the visit of Aston Villa, who joined United and Norwich in the Premier League this term after winning last season’s Championship play-ofto full back, back to centre back, back to full back and I don’t want to come and see that’.

“So I won’t blame the fans, they come here to support the team, they will come to Tottenham next week, they will go to Southampton on Boxing Day ahampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl. Before defeat to Everton on Saturday, the fullback declared he would be leaving at the end of the season when his contract expires.Speaking on BBC 5 Live Sport, Sutton said: “You’ve got to question some of the playend some responsibility is on the players to excite them, to have the personality and the balls to take the ball in an area and beat someone or play forwards. That’s up to the players as well, it’s a joint thing.”

t must be a worry for Lampard that Chelsea have not. And the Blues have not led at home in the Premier League since the draw with Sheffield United at the end of August.

Lampard said: “I don’t know about fear, but in front of our own fans it’s clear now we aren’t playing well enough and getting enough results. Today wasn’t a ‘we’re creating loads of chances day’, we created two or three great chances and we need to take them if we want to improve.

“But today we just didn’t get the fans excited enough. The fans shouldn’t be excited if we’re going to play 10 balls across our back four. They shouldn’t be. I think that’s not the team I want to manage.”

ournemouth goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale had to make a brilliant point-blank save from Emerson Palmieri, but, other than that, he enjoyed a relatively quiet afternoon.

Abraham twice missed the target, sweeping a Cesar Azpilicueta cross wide and heading over the crossbar, but he was often isolated as Wilian, Christian Pulisic and substitute Callum Hudson-Odoi failed to make an impact.

Other than struggling in attack, Chelsea are panicky at the back as proven by the fact they have kept one clean sheet in their last 12 games. On Saturday, the defence were caught out by a Jefferson Lerma header over the top.

Chelsea defenders, plus the assisponed their upcoming Under-23s game against Swansea City. The Red Devils’ youngsters were set to play against the Swans in Premier League 2 on Friday. But the game is now postponed for a later date. The issue is due to the visitors Swansea having an illtant referee on the far side who raised his flag, thought Gosling was offside but the midfielder brilliantly hooked the ball back over himself and Kepa Arrizabalaga to find the net. Following a long VAR check, the goal was given to the delight of Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe.

“We needed it,” said Howe. “Certainly for a while, today has been the best we have fought, the best we’ve competed, the most desire I have seen from the group. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t feel there has been a lack of effort, but when things have gone against us, there has been a feeling of everything is conspiring to try to break us. Today we never had those moments and were able to build the other way.”

ottenham can now cut the gap between themselves and Chelsea to just three points, ahead of next week’s clash between the two clubs, by beating Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday. But, of course, Jose Mourinho is already well aware of that.

How Pep Guardiola is already exploiting the new goal kick rules

content_img

data-js=”article-body” data-insert-mobile-adslot>

Under the old rules, Kyle Walker and Aymeric Laporte split wide to the edge of the penalty area with Stones alongside United players how to play a high-press while on preseason tour in Australia. The Red Devils kicked off their preparations for the 2019/20 campaign with a win over Perth Glory on Friday night. They will take on Leeds United in Perth on Wednesday and GFernandino centrally to form a 1-2-2 structure with goalkeeper Ederson.

The new goal kick rules have offered Guardiola the chance to innovate. In the Community Shield, one of the centre-halves would drop to the six-yard line to form a pivot with stand-in goalkeeper Claudio Bravo – this gave Liverpool another horizontal line of City players to think about.

In this example it was Nicolas Otamendi. Stones and would form the next line just outside the area, making sure they were not standing on the same vertical line as Bravo or Otamendi.

After Bravo and Otamendi hadBurnley. The Hornets are bottom of the table after the 3-0 reverse.Asked about his own position, the Hornets boss responded: “It’s time, it’s time, it’s belief, it’s belief, it’s fight, it’s fight, it’s all these kind of things that we can do to hel exchanged passes, Roberto Firmino shuffled across to cut-off a pass to Stones which opened up a lane for Bravo to find Rodri. Had that pass not been available, there was a safer option to either full-back who were wide against the touchline.

It looks risky and still causes anxiety among fans in the stands, but the idea was to either discourage Liverpool from pressing altogether or to “tomorrow” if he was allowed to for the Championship side. The 34 year old former Manchester United star joined from Major League Soccer side DC United but is not eligible to play until January.”I could play. I didn’t have long off – if the game was create overloads higher up the pitch by playing through them.

At the other end, Liverpool employed a more orthodox set-up with Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk standing inside the penalty area but split with a central midfielder dropping between them.

City’s build-up is not all about obsessively playing short, though. They use the element of surprise by Ederson or Bravo kicking long to catch out defences who creep too high up the pitch, exploiting the speed of Raheem Sterling or Leroy Sane. Sergio Aguero’s opening goal against Arsenal in the 2018 Carabao Cup final was a perfect example.

Guardiola is a Johan Cruyff disciple and Cruyff’s maxim was simple: make the pitch small when defending but make it as big as possible when you have the ball.

With defenders dropping into the six-yard box and forwards on the shoulder of the last defender, Man City make the pitch huge and create so much depth. Here Bravo decides to kick long and has Liverpool’s defence scrambling to recover:

Do you try and condense the space but risk being felled by one straight ball over the top, or drop off and allow City to play out from the back with ease? It is a conundrum coaches will wrestle with all season.

Bills Today: Buffalo's newest safety eager to play with Hyde and Poyer

content_img

The Bills wasted no time adding depth at the safety position, as they signed Rafael Bush on the first day of the 2018 free agency period. He joins one of the best safe Vardy.Vardy appeared to collect a hamstring injury during their 4-1 rout of West Ham.But Rodgers said, “It is not his hamstring which is good. Hopefully over the next couple of days it will ease off and he will be fit.”Jamie is a real talisman for tty duos in the NFL from a season ago.

Bush mentioned that he’s antsy to play with Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer. In 2017, that tandem combined for 10 interceptions, more than any pair of safeties in the league.

“Well, I’m just looking forward to working with those two guys. As a tandem last year, I think they had maybe, what, 10 interceptions?” said Bush. “As a unit last year, the secondary was pretty good. I’m just here to kind of just bring my skill set to the team and help in whatever way I can.”

Bush has made plays in a variety of ways at safety throughout his seven-year career. In 76 career games (18 starts), he’s tallied 190 tackles, 13 passes defended, three interceptions, three fumble recoveries, two sacks, one forced fumble, and one defensive touchdown.

As a fellow safety, it’s come natural for Bush tracking the success of Hyde and Poyer.

“I think just being a safety, you look at other safeties around the league, so that’s kind of natural for guys, myself included,” he said. “Watching those guys play together, I’ve been watching Micah Hyde in Green Bay for some years, and I always thought he was a great player.

“Poyer was one of those guys that was a special teams player at first. I kind of can relate to that, being that myself, and then kind of getting the opportunity to play and making the most of his opportunities. I respect that, so like I said, I’m excited to work with those guys and can’t wait to get to work.”

The Bills undoubtedly inherited a winner with their latest quarterback signing. Former Alabama Crimson Tide signal-caller, AJ McCarron, has three BCS National Championship rings to his name.

So, what does the newest Bills QB do with those championship rings?

“Mine, I give them to my family. My uncle has one, my dad has one and my grandpa has one,” said McCarron. “I don’t ever wear one. I play just because I love playing the game. I let them enjoy all that.”

In McCarron’s four seasons at Alabama, he posted some absurd numbers. In 53 games, he threw for 9,019 yards, 77 touchdowns, and only 15 interceptions.

McCarron got his first national championship ring in 2009 when he was redshirting as a true freshman and the Crimson Tide went 14-0. The quarterback had a much more significant role in earning his last two championship rings. He was named the Offensive Player of the Game in ‘Bama’s 2011 national title-winning performance in a 21-0 win over LSU.

He then followed that up with another national title the following season as Alabama routed Notre Dame 42-14 for the 2012 national championship.

Tate joined on Thursday to discuss his free agency process.

“I’m in Cincinnati right now,” he said. “Right now, I’m working out and I’ve got a couple of teams interested, but nothing is official yet. I’m just working out and hanging with my wife and my kids.”

Tate, a nine-year veteran in the NFL, has played with three different teams in his career. His first two years (2009-2010) were with the New England Patriots. After his time with the Pats, he went on to play five seasons (2011-2015) for the Cincinnati Bengals. After his five-year stint in Cincy, Tate came to Buffalo where he’s spent the past two seasons (2016-2017).

With free agency a few days old, Tate was asked if he’s heard from the Bills.

“No, I haven’t heard from the Bills yet, but it’s still early,” he said. “Anything can change from hour to hour so I’m patiently waiting.”

In his two seasons with the Bills, Tate mainly served as a return man. He returned 46 punts in Buffalo, averaging 10.7 yards per return. As a kick returner, he took back 57 kicks and averaged 21.2 yards per return.

It’s uncertain whd he misses Cristiano Ronaldo.Ronaldo left Real Madrid 18 months ago for Juventus and Messi has admitted in the past he appreciated the presence of the Portuguese in the LaLiga. Messi felt Ronaldo forced him to continually improve as a player. And yesether Tate will return to Buffalo or not. One thing’s for certain, he enjoyed the past two years here.

“I felt like it went pretty good. We went to the playoffs, which was good for the organization,” he said. “I have no complaints about Buffalo. I love it up there.”

Top 10 reasons why Bills-Raiders is a must-watch matchup

10. White on blue

For this week’s contest, the Bills boys will be wearing a white on blue uniform combination. Take a look.

After two consecutive victories against AFC opponents, the Bills are looking to secure a third against a tough Oakland squad on Sunday. With the Raiders sitting at 9-2 in the competitive AFC West, the Bills will have their work cut out for them and will be ready to rise to the occasion.

Bills fans, voting is still open and there’s time for you to help send your Bills to the 2017 Pro Bowl!

Cast your vote !

For a few Bills players and coaches, Oakland is far from uncharted territory. Bills sack leader LB Lorenzo Alexander is a native of Berkeley, Calif. and also spent the 2015 season with the Raiders. Additionally, Bills assistant head coach/defense Rob Ryan, wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal, outside linebackers coach Jeff Weeks and offensive line coach Aaron Kromer all spent time on Oakland’s coaching staff.

Buffalo’s offensive line will be tasked with containing one of the NFL’s top pass rushers in DE Khalil Mack this weekend. Coming ofgainst Newcastle United. The United right back has been excellent defensively this season, but has seemed tentative going forward. He was at his explosive best against the Magpies, getting an assist for Marcus Rashford’s header that sealed the win for f an elite Week 12 performance, the University at Buffalo product will look to disrupt Buffalo’s rhythm. It won’t be easy, but the Bills are up for the challenge.

One of the biggest surprises on Buffalo’s offense this season has been wide receiver Justin Hunter. Signed in late September to help bolster the team’s receiving corps, Hunter has managed four touchdowns on just seven receptions. With those stats, expect Hunter to continue to find the end zone.

In Week 13, players around the NFL will be able to showcase the causes they are passionate about through the “My Cause, My Cleats” initiative.  The league-wide program allows each participant to customize their cleats and wear them during the game. Several members of the Buffalo Bills will be taking part in the campaign to help share their unique stories and raise awareness for various causes.

It’s no secret that Bills running back LeSean McCoy is on a roll. The eliteclash with crosstown rivals Manchester United. The Belgian was absent for Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup fifth-round. And manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed DeMarcus McGuane has ended his loan with Telstar.McGuane’s time at Barcelona has come to an end, reports Sport. He signed in January 2018 from Arsenal but after being loaned out to Telstar, in Holland, he’s ready to sign permanently for Nottingham Fores Bruyne has suffered an injury.”He [Kevin de Bruyne] fell down ball carrier has already racked up four 100-yard rushing performances this season and he’s ready to make it five.

In his first game back since he was placed on the injured reserve list in September, Bills top wide out Sammy Watkins definitely made an impact. On just three receptions, Watkins racked up 80 yards and helped the Bills come away with a Week 12 win. Although he’s listed as questionable to play in Oakland, the Bills expect that the difference maker will take the field.

1. Playoff implications

At 6-5, the Bills are in eighth place in the AFC and still very much alive in the hunt for the playoffs. Aware that they’ll need to continue to stack up wins to earn a trip to the postseason, the Bills are prepared to do what it takes.

Scouting Report: Bills at Lions

content_img

**

– Buffalo’s right guard will be seeing Suh more than any other offensive lineman, and he’ll need some assistance knowing most opponents cannot handle him in one-on-one situations very often.

– It’s a dynamic rookie receiver against a second-year corner, who is fourth on the team in tackles and leads the team in pass breakups. Slay is also tied for the team lead in interceptions.

Bills Top 2 Advantages

– Detroit’s pass rush is pretty formidable in its own right, but facing the Lions’ offensive line could prove fruitful for Buffalo’s pass rushers off the edge. Through the first four games this season the Lions have given up the third-most sacks in the league.

– Again the Lions’ run ‘D’ is a top 10 unit as well, but in this matchup Buffalo’s third-ranked run defense has a big edge against a Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera is happy with his first weeks at PSG.Herrera joined PSG this month in a Bosman deal.He revealed, “I’m just trying to be myself, to be natural. I’m lucky because I joined a great group of other Spanish playerDetroit run game that ranks just 25th in the league and might be without the services of Joique Bell (concussion).

Bills Number 1 Must

– Buffalo’s third down success rate has been on a steady decline through the first four weeks of the season. With Kyle Orton at quarterback this week, the Bills need to improve their efficiency on third down to keep drives alive against a team that’s capable of putting up points.

Scouting Eye

**

He doesn’t make the play every time, but Matthew Stafford is pretty cool when facing blitz situations. So far this season the Lions’ former number one overall pick has gone 16-25 passing for 257 yards and two touchdowns, while also taking two sacks. Those numbers are good for a passer rating of 124.9, the fourth highest figure in the league.

The Lions will be playing their second game since losing MLB Stephen Tulloch to a season-ending knee injury. Tulloch suffered a torn ACL in Week 3 when he was celebrating a sack of Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers. Surgery was performed this week and deemed a success. Last Sunday was the first game Tulloch missed in his nine-year career. Stepping in to take his place is Tahir Whitehead a third-year player out of Temple.

Detroit’s offense has solid weapons at the skill positions, but it hasn’t translated into much offensive success on first or second down. In fact the Lions rank 30th in the league in first down efficiency where they gain four lightly this season.Arsenal will meet Chelsea in the final next week in Baku.Sanllehi told arsenal.com: “He’s won it three times already, he’s never lost a final, and we’re hoping that that streak continues. From day one, when we were talking with hyards or more just over 40 percent of the time (40.2%). On second down their conversion percentage is just a shade over 27 percent, which ranks 27th in the NFL. However, those substandard numbers haven’t meant a whole lot in negatively impacting the Lions’ success rate on third down.

The Lions stand fourth in the league in third down conversion percentage at an impressive 52.4 percent. In third-and-short situations they rank fourth in the league as well (75%) and in third-and-medium they rank second in the league with a 73.3 percent conversion rate.

Detroit’s defense has been stingy the first month of the season when it comes to giving up yards. They rank first in the league in yards allowed per game, but perhaps even more impressive are their tackles for loss. The Lions are tied for second in the league in opponent rusdeparture for Juventus last summer.Perez denied that Real Madrid’s refusal to help the player pay debts to the tax authorities contributed to his departure.”I think he already had it quite clear that he wanted new challenges,” Perez said on El Transihes for negative yardage with 16. They also rank third in the NFL for opponent yards lost on negative plays (-113).

Lions’ All-Pro WR Calvin Johnson has been hobbled by an ankle injury the last couple of weeks. His two-catch 12-yard output last week against the Jets was his lowest production in a game in almost five seasons. Johnson did not practice at all last week leading up to last Sunday’s game. There’s a chance he might practice more this week, and he is expected to play, but he’s not expected to be 100 percent healthy.

Buffalo Chips

“I think we’ve got a lot of good players. All across the board we’ve got young talent on the outside. We’ve got two running backs that can take a lot of pressure off of us. And I think when you ask the offensive line to do the right thing I think they can really play hard for you and do a lot of great things. We’re going up against a good defense on the road. We’re going to have to play our best football to come out with a win.”

-QB Kyle Orton

Stat of the Week

Kyle Orton is 4-0 lifetime against the Detroit Lions passing for 822 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions and a 102.2 passer rating.

Milestones in reach

-Fred Jackson needs two rushing touchdowns to become the fourth Bills player with 30 or more in his time with Buffalo.

-Mike Williams needs three receptions for 225 in his career.

-Mario Williams needs one sack for 80 in his NFL career.

Final Note

In his last eight games against NFC opponents, Mario Williams has 10.5 sacks.

data-js=”article-body” data-insert-mobile-adslot>

Morata revealed he took advice from one of his new Chelsea team-mates who will be in Singapore to greet him. “I spoke with (Cesar) Azpilicueta and he told me everything is OK, and he found it easy,” said Morata.

“The Premier League is one of the best in the world, so I’m happy to be here.” Morata had looked set to join Manchester United before Jose Mourinho hijacked Chelsea’s interest in Romelu Lukaku, whic talk of Lampard blocking a new contract offer being made to Willian. But the manager says he’s yet to speak with his former teammate. He told chelseafc.com: “It does feel different, but in the short period I have been in charge it changes very quicklh resulted in the Blues moving for the 24-year-old.

Questioned on how close he came to moving to Old Trafford, Morata added: “I don’t know, the most important thing is I’m here playing for Chelsea. Finally I’m here.”

Morata’s move brings an end to a three-year wait to work with Conte, who signed him for Juventus in 2014 and failed in a bid to take him to Chelsea last summer.

Conte quit Juventus before the pair could work together, but the Spaniard has remained grateful for the faith Chelsea’s head coach has shown in him.

“I’m going to the team managed by the coach who has placed the most faith in me and that’s great for me,” said Morata. “I’m very happy.”

Speaking in April, Morata revealed the impact Conte had made on him by saying: “Conte is the manager who most ‘bet’ on me, without even ever having had me in his team.

“I’m very conscious of that. He bet on me for Juventus but left before I arrived, then he wanted me at Chelsea come what may. He knows me better than I could imagine, I’m sure, and that’s important. It motivates you to work hard, train well.

“I feel indebted to him because he’s the coach that most trusted in me, most wanted me,diola is delighted with the form of Rodri in preseason.Guardiola paid tribute to another impressive display from Rodri as City rounded off a successful Asia Tour with a fine 3-1 win over Yokohama F Marinos. “Yeah. Kevin (De Bruyne) made another great who made me feel I could perform at the highest level. And yet I’ve never had the fortune to actually work with him. I’m sure sooner or later I will.”

On the fact he almost joined Chelsea last summer, Morata added: “Various Premier League coaches called to tell me to play for them. I said yeah, I’d like to, that if I had to leave I would almost certainly go to London, but that I didn’t know what Madrid would do. I knew they’d bring me back, but I didn’t know if it was to keep me or sell me.

“I spoke directly to Mauricio Pochettino and Antonio Conte, although the norm is clubs call my dad or agent. Madrid said they didn’t want to sell. I remember talking to my dad then and him saying ‘This guy (Conte) is going to win the League there (in England).”

Real paid tribute to Morata ahead of his move to Chelsea by releasing a statement on their website that read: “The club wishes to express its thanks for the dedication, professionalism and exemplary conduct displayed by the player over the years, spanning his time in our academy right through to his spell as a member of the first-team squad.”

Another of Chelsea’s summer signings, central defender Antonio Rudiger, is also expected to join up with Conte’s squad in Singapore after complan Dijk says they’re unharmed from last season’s Premier League title heartbreak.Van Dijk believes that Liverpool’s Champions League success healed the scars of losing the Premier League title today’s opponents Manchester City on the final day.Heeting his post-Confederations Cup break.

Alvaro Morata is valued at £6.5m in Telegraph Fantasy Football but is he good enough to make your team? –

Arsene Wenger strives to defy critics by seeing the positives in Arsenal’s Champions League absence

content_img

data-js=”article-body” data-insert-mobile-adslot>

Having found themselves eight places and 21 points below Arsenal at the end of the 2015-2016 season, Chelsea ended the 2016-2017 campaign under Antonio Conte four places and 18 points better off than Sunday’s opponents. Arsenal’s FA Cup final victory that denied Conte’s team the domestic double might have mitigated against that reverse but it does beg the question of how Wenger is going to make up the ground with the gruelling added extra of Thursday night football.

When the two sides met in Beijing last month, Arsenal found themselves well-beaten and their performance against Sevilla in the second of two Emirates Cup games last Sunday . It is early days yet but already Wenger is having to deal with the questions over Alexis Sánchez’s future as well as those on his own new contract after yet another turbulent season in front of a divided support.

He did not take well a question about having to justify his own position as manager, an obligation he clearly does ned Victor Lindelof after their Carabao Cup defeat to Manchester City.United trailed their rivals 3-0 at half-time, in the first leg of the Cup semi-final before Marcus Rashford pulled a goal back for the hosts.”This is poor defending from Victor Lindot feel. “I am sorry I am still here. I can understand that you want to kill me but at the moment, I have survived,” he said

“Look, [last season] we won the FA Cup and pton.Pellegrini praised Michail Antonio and matchwinner Sebastien Haller, who combined dangerously together to threaten the Saints throughout as the Chilean switched to a 4-4-2 formation at St Mary’s.The manager said: “Both of them worked very well amade 75 points, and we are of course not happy with it but some teams did worse. When we qualified for the Champions League, people told me: ‘But you didn’t win a trophy.’ Now we won a trophy, and didn’t qualify for the Champions League, and it’s said to me: ‘Why are you not in the Champions League?’ That’s normal to live with but I want to focus on my job and do as well as I can and win absolutely every competition.”

It sounds like Wenger is lukewarm at best about the Europa League, a competition that the club won in 1970 in its very early guise as the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup,. As usual, his objections seem to spring from his opposition to the structure of the competition, which accepts certain eliminated teams from the Champions League into the New Year knockout stages, rather than the benefits it offers to a pragmatic manager.

Asked whether he would take it seriously as a competition, it would be right to say that Wenger hedged his bets. “I will always play a team that has a good chance to win the next game. In the Europa League if we can afford sometimes to rest some players we will do it. But we have to adapt to the level of the competition and see first what kind of group we play in.”

The notion that it might be considered a route into the Champions League was summarily dismissed. “You cannot go into the season and think that. I always was not in favour of that, because I think at some stage it can influence on the championship. If a team is in a position in April where they have more chance to win the Europa League they can let some games go in the championship, and not completely focus on that, on the regularity of the competition.”

“I was always against it [Champions League teams’ entry]. Because apart from Man United, who did win the Europa League, all the years before it was always a team who was kicked out of the Champions League. That’s why I was always against, when we voted in Geneva, I was always against it.”

It did not sound like a man who has his eye on a first European trophy at Arsenal, the one achievement he has not managed in more than 20 years, although, as Mourinho can attest, that may ion Mirandes. The Watford Observer says Aias scored for CD Mirandes last night in a 1-1 draw with Real Zaragoza. The 23-year-old has now scored eight goals in 23 appearances in all competitions this season, including six goals in six games in the Copa change if his team are slipping from contention in the league come spring.

Henry is currently working as assistant to Belgium national team manager Roberto Martinez and has helped and Eden Hazard.

The 39-year-old will pass his Uefa Pro Licence in time for the start of next season and has made it clear that his dream job would be to manage Arsenal.

Other than having played at the highest level for Arsenal, Barcelona and France, Henry worked under managers such as Wenger, Pep Guardiola and Aime Jacquet.

His France World Cup winning team-mate , while Guardiola took over at Barcelona in 2008 having never managed a senior team.

Kroenke Jr sees no reason why Henry could not take a similar route straight to the top and will make sure the former striker is among the candidates to replace Wenger if Arsenal are forced into a change.

During lengthy discussions, Kroenke Jr is believed to have already picked the brains of Henry on a range of subjects – including his plans to move into management.

Henry worked at Arsenal coaching the youth players as part of gaining his Uefa A licence and was offered a job with the Under-18s by the club until Wenger decided he could not combine the role with his work as a Sky Television pundit.

Wenger’s current contract expires at the end of the season and he is yet to sign a new deal with fears mounting, following the latest dismal defeat to Liverpool, that he will step down in the summer.

Glenn, Urbik likely to miss two weeks

content_img

They both left with ankle sprains in Sunday’s game and did not return. According to head coach Chan Gailey right guard Kraig Urbik and left tackle Cordy Glenn will both be on the shelf for the next couple of games.

“It may be two (weeks) minimum on both of them, but we’re not going to rule out the second game today,” said Gailey Monday. “I’ve not been very good about doing that lately, so we’re going to say it’s probably two but I don’t know about that.”

Urbik left Sunday’s game in the first quarter with what he confirmed was a high-ankle sprain. He was hobbling around the locker r behind the rest of the players in terms of fitness having joined up with them after taking part in the Copa America with Chile. He suffered a hamstring injury in his final game of the competition which also set him back.Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists oom Monday in an immobilizer boot.

“It’s always a disappointment toor Nolito.Celta are enjoying an impressive transfer window and are in talks with Sevilla to sign Nolito.”We have to see them reach an agreement, Sevilla and Celta, and in turn our club with Nolito. I would like him to come back, as I said last season lose a game like that and to go out in the first quarter like that is always heartbreaking to not finish the game,” said Urbik. “I’m going to take it day by day and see how it goes from here on out.”

For Urbik the injury is particularly frustrating because it’s the third straight season he’s missed time due to injury. He missed three games last season and was placed on injured reserve toward the end of the 20 with Sergio Guardiola about his journey from Spain’s fourth tier Tercera to leading the line in the LaLiga, his career hopes – and of course, we ask the striker about playing for his idol Ronaldo – the president of Real Valladolid.A: Well, it’s a dr10 season.

“You can’t really avoid it if a guy falls on your legs,” he said. “It’s a part of football and it happens sometimes and unfortunately it’s happened to me each of the past three years.”

Urbik will be replaced in the lineup by veteran Chad Rinehart, who has appeared in 20 games for the Bills over the past two seasons.

Glenn’s injury was also an ankle, as he too had his leg rolled up on from behind at the end of a pass play late in the third quarter.

The left tackle walked off the field under his own power, but his ankle was bent awkwardly inward as it was caught under the pile on a Ryan Fitzpatrick sack.

Glenn will be replaced by Chris Hairston, who started seven games at left tackle last season.

S Jairus Byrd, TE Scott Chandler and WR Donald Jones all left Sunday’s game with injuries. Byrd’s hip contusion is not considered serious.

“It’ll take a few days to get it moving again, but I think he’ll be fine,” said Gailey.

Gailey said all indications are Chandler and Jones will be fine looking ahead to the team’s Week 5 game at San Francisco.

Antoine Griezmann’s brother teases Manchester United fans with Old Trafford tweets

Depay’s largely unsuccessful two-year spell at Manchester United was brought to an end after Lyon agreed to meet Manchester United’s £12m valuation.

The former PSV winger impressed in his first appearance for Lyon, coming on as a substitute during Lyon’s win over Marseille on Sunday evening.

Griezmann tweeted a picture of the 22-year-old as he conducted his first post-match interview following Lyon’s 3-lback has underlined the importance of being capable of clinching the LaLiga Santander title, despite missing out on the Champions League and the Copa del Rey silverware this season.”It’s a very difficult moment for the whole team as we were very clo1 win over Marseille.

"Sorry Memphis I think Old Trafford is better!" wrote Griezmann.

Just days later the French DJ sent out another Manchester United tweet, attaching a picture of Old Trafford without any caption.

Theo Griezmann, who is thought to support Manchester United, reactivated his Twitter account earlier this month after temporarily suspending his account.

The tweets sen plans to replace wantaway midfielder Paul Pogba. The Daily Mail says Pogba still wants to leave after pushing for moves to Barcelona and Real Madrid over the last two years. The Frenchman only has 18 months left on his £290,000-a-week contract, althot a number of Manchester United fans into a minor frenzy, with some club in the summer. The player has confirmed discussions over the contract extension are ongoing and that he would very much like to stay at St James’ Park.Ritchie became a fan favourite in the recently finished season as he impressed in a left wing-baalling on Theo Griezmann to persuade his brother to sign for the club.

As reported by James Ducker earlier this week, Manchester United are understood to be already working on a £86m deal to bring Griezmann to the club in the summer.

Atletico Madrid manager,

Simeone is likely to leave the Vicente Calderon at the end of this season after taking the unprecedented step of reducing his Atletico contract and his imminent departure is likely to hasten Griezmann’s exit.

"I don’t tie anybody down. I simply work in order to continue getting better for the good of the club," said Simeone.

Despite admitting his star striker has been attracting plenty of interest

“There are many offers,’ Cerezo said. “I don’t know what will come of Manchester United’s interest. What I can say though is that Griezmann will be an Atlético player for a long time.”

Liverpool 2 West Ham 2: Divock Origi salvages point for hosts after Loris Karius blunder further dents title challenge

content_img

data-js=”article-body” data-insert-mobile-adslot>

Re-watch the last six goals they have conceded and ask how many were preventable? At least three. Probably four.

Karius needed a performance to back up . Instead he was again unimpressive, failing to shove away Dmitri Payet’s 28th-minute free-kick. He can spend the week finding another former Manchester United player working in the media to respond to if it makes him feel better, but it does not alter that .

He may get better. Longer term, he could become the most assured Liverpool keeper since Clemence. But Liverpool are a side still capable of winning the title this year, so spare us the high-ground lectures against those justifiably infuriated that such an obvious flaw is undermining their latest challenge.

It was more exasperating for the Kop because, just as at Bournemouth, they had watched their side start as if they were in the mood for a rampage.

Adam Lallana was able to return to the starting line-up for the first time since being injured playing for England against Spain. He immediately demonstrated what Liverpool have lacked in his absence, controlling exquisitely before drilling the home side ahead on five minutes after Sadio Mané’s cross and some inadequate defending.

After West Ham’s mauling by Arsenal a week ago, Bilic must have feared the worst. Instead, his clever use of Michail Antonio as a striker in the first half bothered Dejan Lovren and, to a lesser extent, Joel Matip on the counter-attacks. There was an early warning when he scurried clear on eight minutes, his shot pushed over by Karius prior to the goalkeeper’s travails from Payet’s set-piece.

There was more fortune about West Ham’s second six minutes before the interval. Havard Nordtveit’s long ball was inadvertently flicked on by Jordan Henderson; it wrong-footed Matip who, that aside, was outstanding. In the clear, Antonio directed the ball beyond Karius, who was again unimposing.

But Randolph returned the favour three minutes into the second half, dropping Mané’s cross to enable Divock Origi to tap in. The festive gift exchanges ended there with the visitors defending more resolutely the longer the game progressed.

Not for the first time, a fixture list many presumed had Bilic staring into the abyss may have led to his salvation, a point at Old Trafford and Anfield makes that 5-1 humiliation against Arsenal an oddity.

“We showed great reaction after the goal,” said Bilic, who as a former Besiktas coach dedicated the point to victims of Saturday’s terrorist attack in Turkey. “It’s a really great point for us before a crucial week.”

For Klopp there is worrying momentum to reverse. Top of the league before the last international break, Liverpool now find themselves hanging onto the coat-tails of Chelsea heading into the festive period. The loss of er Joe Allen. The veteran central midfielder is wanted by several Premier League clubs. But the Championship side have put a £15 million price tag on his head, per the Daily Mail. The source claims that West Ham are only willing to pay around £8 milliPhilippe Coutinho is not helping, and the squad suddenly looks much thinner at the busiest, tiring stage. He has a bench full of teenagers and needs the senior men to return.

“It is difficult to stay in the title race with ,” said Klopp. “This is the moment to collect as many points as possible. It’s a negative we didn’t win but it is still a point. We are still on a very good way. We are third. Come on – a lot of teams should feel worse.”

Bilic left Merseyside feeling the vote of confidence in him expressed by the West Ham board had gone some way to being validated.

We must wait a while longer for Karius to demonstrate the show of faith in his skills from Klopp will be similarly rewarded.

“The criticism was very harsh,” said Klopp. “When we analysed the [Bournemouth] game I found eight players who could have defended the goal before Loris was involved. Even the best goalkeepers in the world still make mistakes.” Or as Pepe Reina, one of Karius’ predecessors, put it earlier this week: “It’s a team that also at times has to do better for the goalkeeper.”

The Hammers beat Man City, Liverpool and Arsenal on their travels last season, which perhaps inflated their end of season points total to put them in a false position. They’ve found things tough going this term.

Of players to have scored 40+ Premier League goals, only Duncan Ferguson, Tim Cahill, Kenwyne Jones and John Terry have scored a higher proportion with their head. The previous three Premier League games to involve Liverpool and to be played on a Sunday this season have all produced seven goals (21 in total).

What form are the two teams in?

Liverpool were flying until last week’s , having not lost in their previous 11 league matches. Jurgen Klopp’s side are third heading into the weekend’s matches, four points behind leaders Chelsea and a point second-placed behind Arsenal.

To use the modern footballing vernacular West Ham are in a very bad moment. They were dreadful in , and are winless in their last five league matches (D2,L3). Going into the weekend’s matches, Slaven Bilic’s side are 17th, just a point above the relegation zone.

What have the managers been saying?

"I have no idea when he will be back," said Klopp.

"Until now he didn’t train. He wasn’t 100 per cent yesterday but he will be on the pitch today but that means starting the work. He won’t be with the team."

"That is the life of football. You cannot force things like this.

"The main reason why we have lost our intensity is that we have had so many injuries, all in a small space of time.

"Then, because we had three games in a week, we had to balance things, not walk on eggshells exactly, but to be careful in training.travel to Italy for their Europa League clash at Inter Milan.Italy is in a state of lockdown and no football is allowed to be played in the country until April, other than European competitions, because of the spread of coronavirus.Torres came out on

"I would like to clarify this now. I was not criticising my staff. My reason was not to moan because we had lost to Arsenal but to provoke a reaction so we can get back that intensity.

"We have had a good few days’ training but, rather, I want and expect to see a good reaction in the long term.

"The bottom line is yes, it is my job to get the best out of my players – and I said just that, a few times, straight after the Arsenal match. I am not in the blame game because that achieves nothing."

What are the odds?

Liverpool – 3/10

West Ham – 10/1

Draw – 5/1

What’s our prediction?

Liverpool to win 3-2.

Manchester United 4 Leicester 1: Jose Mourinho’s men back on track after four goal first-half

content_img

data-js=”article-body” data-insert-mobile-adslot>

Rooney played just seven minutes of the game, summoned as a substitute for his 528th appearance for the club, replacing Marcus Rashford, who had scored United’s third. Mourinho was prepared to play any tune necessary to get the show back on the road, and despite his protestations about a tactical decision to introduce pace and width to the side this was unquestionably a significant chapter in the Rooney years.

The last time United were four goals up at half-time Rooney had bywill leave Manchester United next month. The French midfielder has been linked with Real Madrid and Juventus. But Raiola insists Pogba will not force his way out of Old Trafford in January.“Paul has always respected Manchester United just as Manchest then scored one of two goals he would get in that game, against Fulham on Aug 20, 2006. The first time in a new manager’s era that a big name is left out – and it happened to Rooney under Sir Alex Ferguson – is always an awkward moment for all concerned but it is always a case that life moves on to fresh controversies.

As for United, they scored an improbable three goals from corners, while the second was a brilliant passing movement finished by Juan Mata, Rooney’s replacement. They blitzed Leicester at the end of the first half, and Ranieri’s men were complicit in their own defeat, but it was a strange game that was played out without much note in the second half, save from a brilliant strike from the substitute, Demarai Gray.

Afterwards, Ranieri said that his team had been the more likely to score the first goal, and then having conceded Chris Smalling’s header direct from Daley Blind’s corner from the left, fell apart seven minutes before half-time, when United scored their remaining three goals. At half-time Ranieri replaced Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez to save the legs of his key players for the Champions League game against Porto on Tuesday.

There was also Paul Pogba’s first goal for United, the fourth before half-time. Sam Allardyce was in the directors’ box to witness Gray’s right-footed hit on the hour and also to see Michael Carrick come on in the second half for his first minutes in the Premier League this season.

Mourinho said before and after the match that he selected Jesse Lingard and Rashford because he expected a “phenomenally intense and fast” game and wanted those two young players to offer width and pace. Mata was having a quiet afternoon until he shaped the move that ended with his brilliant 37th-minute goal, the pick of United’s four, and for now it is the Spanish midfielder who is ahead of Rooney in his manager’s mind.

In spite of Mourinho’s predictions it was a slow burner in which United only came alive in the last third of the first half. Without the intensity to overwhelm their opponents, United required the quality of their passing to pick their way through the substantial defensive line that Leicester had established to stop them.

The first decent sequence of United passes came on 22 minutes and won them the corner from which they scored their first. Daley Blind, an accomplished left-back for the day, whipped a left-footed ball in from the left and amid the general Leicester confusion, Smalling got above Islam Slimani to head the ball down past Ron-Robert Zieler.

From there, United hit a groove that would deliver another three goals before half-time. Ander Herrera was outstanding in midfield. He seems to have played his way into favour under Mourinho, who says the Spanish midfielder offers a defensive intensity others do not. Herrera played arguably the ball of the game to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who teed up Rashford with the outside of his right foot, but the teenager missed.

The three goals in five minutes in the lead-up to the break finally got Old Trafford on its feet. Mata started the move for his goal with the ball going to Pogba and then to Lingard, whose sharp flick with his right foot put the ball on track for a fine left-footed finish from Mata. Lingard seems to have been forgiven earlier than expected for his first-half performance against Manchester City two weeks’ previously.

Leicester looked broken, and two more goals followed quickly, both from corners from the left. Blind played the first low into the inside-left channel, where Mata struck it hard across the face of goal, and Rashford finished. Then Pogba met another Blind corner to head past Zieler with three minutes of the half remaining.

Gray’s right-footed shot from the left with Lingard hanging off his arm was a fine goal for the half-time substitute, who had a good 45 minutes for his team. The game was long over by then, and a victory over the champions – however flat Ranieri’s team might be – was just what Mourinho needed. He says that he is still weaning them off Van Gaal’s negative approach – and this, you might say, was the start of the shock treatment.

Perhaps too nonchalant … Gray picks the ball up on the left, drops his shoulder to get past Valencia and rifles a missile that dips over De Gea and under the bar. What a goal!

That’s one way to shut the Einsteins up, isn’t it? It’s self-evident that United have been working intensely on set-pieces, both defending and attacking them, since  looking so feeble at Watford. It’s a third goal from a Blind corner. The left-back whips it to 12 yards where Pogba beats and beasts Fuchs in the air and buries a header with tungsten-necked force.

Oh dear. I fear I rather jinxed Amartey who was dozing at a corner. Mata was wholly unmarked so Blind passed it to him at the near post and he squared it to Rashford who slid in and stabbed his shot home.

First Rooney’s replacement as captain and now his replacement as No 10 score. Mata cuts in from the right, passes to Pogba and continues his run towards the box. Pogba clips it out to Lingard who pushes it into Mata’s path and he hits it on the half-volley from 15 yards and watches as it arcs into the corner around Zieler’s dive.

Made by Pogba’s first-time early pass down the left and Rashford’s deft, cushioned header out to Blind on the overlap. The left-back wins the corner off Simpson, clips in an attractively whipped cross and Smalling gets up to bury the header from eight yards.

He tackled well, bombed forward in support and was effective and energetic throughout in a man of the match display. You could tell how much his team-mates appreciated his contribution when about half a dozen of them converged on him, rather than the scorer Jamie Vardy, when his tackle set up the opener.

City have lost both their away games, they need Amartey today because Fellaini isn’t there to plod about and Herrera and Pogba will push on.

And meanwhile, a sign that exiles can be much worse:

ht he guided them into the Champions League round of 16.Despite the result against Genk, Ancelotti has been axed just three hours after the final whistle. In a statement, Napoli announced:”The Sporting club Calcio Napoli has decided to revoke the role

The champions, Leicester City, were full of the old verve against an admittedly feeble Swansea and ran Club Brugge and Burnley ragged. That defeat at Anfield, though, was alarming even if Liverpool were unstoppable. They haven’t won at Old Trafford since 1997-98 when Tony Cottee’s goal at the end of January took the points and, lest we forget, United were pipped to the title by eventual Double-winners Arsenal by only one point. Islam Slimani has been terrific so far and it will be interesting to see if United pick Chris Smalling to cope with him even though they look better with Daley Blind in the side. We shall find out imminently.

Manager Jose Mourinho has spoken about his new charges reacting badly to "negativity",b after departing Millwall in the summer, says the Millwall-goalkeeper-searches-new-club.html”>Daily MailMillwall-goalkeeper-searches-new-club.html”>.Archer was released by the Lions at the end of the last campaign and would be an experienced option which some observers felt he increased with public criticism of defender Luke Shaw after the 3-1 defeat by Watford last weekend.

A 3-1 win over Northampton Town in the League Cup on Wednesday night prevented a fourth straight defeat, but it was not an entirely convincing United performance against the third-tier outfit.

There will particular interest in Mourinho’s team selection at home to Leicester and whether England and United captain Wayne Rooney, who has been in poor form, keeps his place.

Manchester United are unbeaten in seven home Premier League games against the Foxes, winning five, drawing two and conceding just four goals in that time.Leicester have won one of their last 18 league trips to Old Trafford (D5 L12), claiming victory in January 1998 courtesy of a Tony Cottee winner.United have scored in each of their last 14 Premier League games against Leicester, netting 33 goals.Jamie Vardy has scored in three of his four games against United for Leicester in all competitions.Jose Mourinho has suffered 12 defeats in his last 23 league games as a manager. His previous 12 league defeats as a boss came over a period of 110 games.Mourinho has not won any of his last four league meetings against a team led by Claudio Ranieri, including defeats in the last two games.Islam Slimani has scored 22 goals in 23 league appearances so far in 2016, after adding to his 20 Portuguese Liga goals with two more on his Premier League debut last weekend.

"He played in England, of course, when he was younger and he has quality so it’s a matter of time and he will be playing really well.

"It’s difficult to adjust – new manager, some new players. They have some good players and of course you need time for everybody, but unluckily in football, time is not what you have every time.

"But I think the directors and everybody knows that this could happen and that some games you have to be patient."
