4 things to watch in the AFC wild card race and Bills-Dolphins this weekend

content_img

It all comes down to the final weekend for the Bills. They’ve got a bona fide shot to end their 17-season playoff drought with their first meaningful final regular season game in 13 years.

Here are some things to keep an eye on this weekend as the Bills head south to play the Dolphins:

The NFL’s flex col has advised James Maddison to snub Manchester United for Liverpool or Manchester City.Nicol believes the Leicester City star could stagnate his career at Old Trafford, in a similar vein to Paul Pogba. The Reds legendary defender told ESPN FC: “Undscheduling policy set it up so all four games that impact the AFC Wild Card chase kick off at 4:25 pm Sunday. So, Bills fans will be busy tracking all four games at once. If they all go Buffalo’s way (all of them don’t have to) here are some reasons why. Remember Buffalo needs to win and a Baltimore loss or a Tennessee loss and a Los Angeles Chargers loss.

They just did two weeks ago in Orchard Park. The Dolphins have already been eliminated from playoff contention. Tyrod Taylor has had his best games against Miami. Cincinnati may want to “win it for Marvin” if indeed it is Marvin Lewis’ last game as head coach. In his last three games in Baltimore, Andy Dalton has averaged 322 yards passing per game, with 5 touchdowns and 1 interception. WR A.J. Green has played four games in his career at Baltimore and has a total of 579 receiving yards with 4 touchdowns.

Jacksonville has the third ranked defense in the NFL. The Jaguars are looking for revenge after losing to Tennessee earlier this season. Jacksonville QB Blake Bortles owns the Titans – he has thrown 9 TDs and 1 INT in his last three games at Tennessee, and averaged 332 yards per game.

The Raiders have won 4 of their last 5 against the Chargers. Raiders Coach Jack Del Rio is 6-3 lifetime against the Chargers. “Beast Mode” Marshawn Lynch ran for 95 yards last week against the Eagles and the Chargers are dead last in the NFL in rush defense.

**

You hear the cliché “coming up big” a lot in the hockey world. With the magnitude of the game in Miami Sunday, there are a couple of Bills who can be serious difference makers in the season finale:

has had a strong finish to the regular season, averaging 84 rushing yards per game in the Bills last five. He’s got three touchdowns in those five games, two of them against Miami a couple of weeks ago. McCoy has a knack for making Dolphin defenders (and others) miss in space and he seems to have a personal grudge with Miami LB Kiko Alonso who he was traded for three years ago.

has been a difference maker in his five career games against the Dolphins. He’s won three of those five, and he’s completed 65-percent of his passes in those matchups. Taylor has 9 TD passes and 0 INTs against the Dolphins over the years, and he’s run for two touchdowns also.

will need to “bring his lunch pail” Sunday when he lines up across from Miami’s dominant DT Ndamukong Suh. It should be a familiar feeling—he just went to battle two weeks ago in Buffalo and Ducasse held his own. Offensive line coach Juan Castillo was singing Ducasse’s praises after the Miami win but it won’t be any easier this weekend. Suh can take over a game with his sheer strength and unnatural quickness. It won’t be entirely on Ducasse’s shoulders, but he’ll play a big role in how much room Shady has to run and how much time Taylor has to throw.

The Bills will finish ahead of Miami and the Jets in the AFC Eden Hazard. The Mirror says Hazard is on his way to Real Madrid after the Spanish giants agreed an initial £88million deal with Chelsea .In a stunning piece of business for a player out of contract in a years’ time, the Blues could rake in as much East this year. They’ve locked up second place in the division for the second time in four years. They’re this year’s first runner-up in the division the Patriots seemingly own.

But Buffalo has a chance to finish the division with a 3-3 record with a win on Sunday. And they get their final crack at beating a division rival in the second match-up of the year. They lost previous rematches this year to the Jets and the Patriots.

**

Right before kickoff Sunday, look at the field at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium. It could look a little worn out.

At 8 pm Saturday, the Miami Hurricanes play Wisconsin in the Orange Bowl at Hard Rock. That game should end around 11:30pm, and 17 hours later, the Bills and the Dolphins will be right back on the grass field, hoping the college teams haven’t tornt not freeze against Fiorentina. The Grifone go head-to-head with the Viola, who could also still be relegated, but need to get a better result than Empoli manage away to Inter Milan to stay up. Prandelli said, “It’s marvellous to see and feeling th it up too much.

The Dolphins have recently installed Platinum TE natural grass on the field at home, but they’ve had some issues with it in the past.

Dolphins radio color commentator Joe Rose, a former Miami tight end, says if it doesn’t rain Saturday night the field should be OK. Should be.

“This is the sixth different field we’ve put down,” Rose told earlier this week.

“We’re fine as long as we don’t get any rain the night before, when the big guys from Wisconsin and the big guys from the Miami Hurricanes are out there. Quick turnaround–we’ve had some of those games when it’s been rough.”

The weather forecast calls for clear skies with only a 10-percent chance of rain Saturday night and Sunday in Miami. And that’s good, according to Rose.

“It has been a struggle for the Dolphins trying to get the right turf that can handle back to back games when it’s raining,” he says.

Bills name Marvin Allen and Brian Adams national scouts

content_img

The Bills pro and college scouting departments are filling up quickly. On Thursday the team announced the hiring of Marvin Allen and Brian Adams as National Scouts.

“Both men are veterans in this league. They’ve been in it for a long time,” said Bills GM Brandon Beane. “It’s the same thing as players, we want to grow and develop. These are two guys who will be over the younger scouts and be part of helping us grow and develop our scouting staff. You just can’t replace their time and accomplishments in the league.”

Allen has spent the last four years as the Director of College Scohis style of play. The now retired Bulgarian was always a polarising figure among fans of the club, as some felt his style was too lazy compared to forwards Carlos Tevez and Wayne Rooney. But Berbatov considers himself “an artist on the pitch” and had uting for the Kansas City Chiefs. A 24-year veteran in NFL scouting, he also spent five years scouting for the Atlanta Falcons, serving as a National Scout after a few years as a regional scout.

The early part of his career was spent with the New England Patriots where he served as an area scout ed with Barcelona.Griezmann finally completed his long-awaited move from Atlético de Madrid to Camp Nou on Friday having seemed set to join Barça last year before opting to stay put. Barça triggered the €120million release clause in his contractfor 16 years (1993-2008).

“Marvin started in the 90’s. He’s most recently been a college (scouting) director so he’s sat in that seat,” Beane said. “He’s going to be a great resource not only for me, but for all our college scouts.”

Allen also had a four-year NFL career as a running back with the PatJody Morris said Chelsea need to address their home form ahead of their third round FA Cup tie with Nottingham Forest on Sunday. With Tribalfootball.com in attendance, Frank Lampard’s assistant was standing in for the pre-match press conference and sariots, who made him an 11th-round pick in the 1988 NFL draft.

Adams has more than 30 years of scouting experience. He spent the 2016 campaign as the Midwest regional scout for the Dallas Cowboys, but spent seven years with the Saints. He also has a working history with Beane, spending seven years in the Panthers scouting department.

“I worked with Brian in Carolina. We had a long history there,” said Beane. “Brian went to the Saints to take a promotion to Assistant Director of College Scouting, and was most recently with Dallas. He’s a veteran in scouting and well respected across the league. I look forward to reuniting with him.”

Bills Today: Bills offense still working on timing

content_img

Here’s the Bills news of note for Aug. 20th.

An offense uses training camp for one main purpose – to get in sync. In offensive coordinator Rick Dennison’s offense, most routes are based upon timing. This means that Tyrod Taylor and his rec have reportedly made an approach for Lille striker Leão.The Toffees are keen on teammate Nicolas Pepe, but face being priced out of a deal.Leao would be a cheaper optioHenderson says they must do better, despite victory over Arsenal. The Reds defeated Arsenal 3-1 on Saturday.”We knew if we did the right things, played to our strengths, defended really well and were clinical in front of goal, then we’d hurt them,” Hen and reports in France suggest Everton have approached Lille over a £37m deal.eivers will need as many reps as possible to ensure they’re on the same page. Rookie Zay Jones said this has been a slow process.

“It’s different when it’s routes against air and everything is laid out for you,” said Jones. “When you get press coverage, sometimes it throws timing off, and sometimes it’s obviously a different look. But, that’s what the preseasons is for. You just have to keep playing and keep building, and that stuff is going to come.”

For a rookie like Jones, and newcomers like Andre Holmes and Corey Brown, establishing timing in a new offense is a process. Not only do they have to become comfortable with their quarterback, but they have to understand their route, and the offensive scheme.2-1 midweek at Camp Nou and the same result this evening in the Derby d’Italia at San Siro.“It has been a mixed week, because we played not badly in Barcelona and here tonight too. We kept the ball and created chances, but were unable to score the It can take countless reps before a quarterback instinctively knows where his receiver will be.

Coach Sean McDermott said that in the second preseason game some of the protection issues could be attributed to the offense being out of sync.

“There are a lot of factors that really came into play in terms of the pressure on our quarterbacks [against the Eagles],” said McDermott. “Technique is obviously one thing, beating the man in front of you and the timing of the offense has to work hand in hand with the protection and route development and the quarterback getting the ball out on time.”

Building timing will only develop as Taylor becomes more familiar with his new targets. As the offense becomes more confident in the scheme, their play will start to find a rhythm.

“I’ve gone back and I was going through charting every penalty and trying to put them in different categories as you try to solve problems,” said McDermott. “You want to be able to say it’s all one area and that’s not the case. There’s some discipline in there. There’s concentration. There’s playing aggressive without hesitation so we stay in good position and we’re not in chase mode. So, there are different buckets that are factoring into the penalties, all of which are unacceptable.”

The Bills ended the second preseason game with 15 penalties for 131 yards. As McDermott stated, these penalties occurred during all parts of the game. Although some of the calls could certainly be considered questionable, the Bills still committed far too many penalties. Some notable calls include a leveraging penalty on Eddie Yarbrough on a field goal, which extended an Eagles drive. Another poor penalty was a pass interference call against Greg Mabin in the end zone, which gave the Eagles the ball at the one yard line.

Jerel Worthy lamented the leveraging call, and said that McDermott said they just can’t have those mental mistkes.

“When you’re running out on the field and you get penalties for being combative and you’re going after the ball, he doesn’t really have a problem with those,” said Worthy. “The dumb penalties, the pre-snap penalties, the false starts and the offsides that we have on defense, those are the ones that can hurt our team and can lead to points.”

Nine-year veteran, and longtime Buffalo Bill, Eric Wood said he’s never seen this many penalties in the preseason.

“It’s something that needs to be fixed,” said Wood. “I don’t know if I’ve ever seen it to this extent.”

McDermott said that he would be bringing in officials to work with the team during practice. Wood said working on penalties in practice could help.

“The game of football is a game of split-second decisions,” said Wood. “You have to just train yourself in practice to just work on it. We just can’t have the pre-snap and post-whistle penalties.”

With officials at practice, and greater scrutiny on penalties, the Bills will certainly make a concerted effort to improve their discipline as they prepare for the Ravens.

Kyle Williams was ranked as the third best defensive tackle in the NFL by ProFootball Focus. Williams is in elite company behind Aaron Donald, and Kawann Short.

Although a weakness last season, the Bills have showed encouraging improvement in their run defense so far in the preseason. Against both the Vikings and Eagles, the Bills were stout against the run. The Bills gave up only 66 rushing yards in the second preseason game. A big part of the Bills run stopping ability is Williams. His capacity to knife into the backfield, and disrupt plays is unmatched by many.

What makes Williams one of the best overall defensive tackles in the NFL is his ability to do it all. Not only can he stop the run, but he can also rush the passer. Williams had five sacks last season. His most productive year was in 2013 when he had 10.5 sacks – a massive number for a defensive tackle.

As the Bills defense looks for a resurgence in 2017, Williams will be one of the most important players in guiding the unit.

Pegula moved by ownership, fans & legacy he follows

content_img

Bills CEO and owner Terry Pegula knows himself too well. It didn’t take long for him to get emotional as he addressed a throng of local dignitaries, media and fans watching in their homes across Western New York announcing he and his wife Kim as the new owners of the Buffalo Bills franchise. Less than 100 words into his speech Pegula paused and broke down saying, ‘I knew this was going to happen again.’ But what he said in his next breath spoke to his ability to relate to the everyday fan.

“We all just bought a team,” he said. “Our team: the Buffalo Bills.”

Pegula called himself a private man, but on Friday he was sharing his ownership with a fan base that worried for decades about the club’s long term future. In the end founder and owner Ralph Wilson made every arrangement to secure the team’s rightful place in Buffalo, rial with Watford Under-23s has been rewarded with a permanent deal. The 21-year-old former Arsenal striker has signed a one-year deal with the option of a further 12 months. Hinds left the Emirates Stadium club in July 2017 to link up again with formbut it wasn’t until the Pegulas’ were declared as the winning bid that the Western New York community collectively exhaled.

The Bills’ new owner was aware of the concern. It was a concern that he and his wife Kim shared, but he didn’t fully grasp the depth of it until he was driving back to Buffalo from a Sabres’ prospects tournament in Michigan. Just hours after he and his wife Kim were announced as the winning bidders for the club, Pegula listened intand Anthony Martial as a front pairing this season.Solskjaer will be hoping Rashford can follow his two-goal showing against Chelsea with another net-busting display against Wolves tomorrow night.A source told The Sun on Sunday: “Part of the reasonently to the outpouring of emotion from fans calling in to WGR radio relieved that the future of the franchise in Buffalo had been secured.

“I could not believe what I heard from fans,” he said. “It was an open forum of relief that, ‘Hey, we don’t have to worry about this anymore.'”

The second owner of the Bills wasth Alisson facing two months out with a calf injury, the Spaniard is now Liverpool’s outright No1.Speaking to the club’s official website, Klopp said: “I’m not worried at all about how he will do it in the long term, but in the short term the problem also moved by the legacy he follows.

“The big thing is Ralph (Wilson) was a large personality. He started this franchise and look where it is now,” Pegula said. “That’s a pretty overwhelming legacy, fifty-four years, and a year from now I’m going to be on one (year). That’s a credit to Ralph (Wilson) and his legacy.”

Though Pegula never met Ralph Wilson, he made a point to trace a connection between himself and the Hall of Fame founder of the franchise. Pegula went all the way back to his early youth when Wilson was a minority owner of the Detroit Lions, and he was a Lions fan at eight-years old.

“I liked lions and tigers when I was a kid, so I saw a football card with a lion on it and a baseball card with a tiger on it and I became Lions and Tigers fans,” Pegula told Buffalobills.com. “But to root for the team that he was a part owner of and then to buy the team that he started and the thing with him beating the Lions (last Sunday), and it was him even though he passed away, his last game as owner, you can’t make this stuff up. I feel like he’s personally handed it over to me.”

Pegula shared how he watched AFL games as a kid, and being drawn to the high scoring games and downfield passing.

“I watched, with curiosity, Buffalo Bills games back in the early ’60s, mostly because there was snow on the field for most of them,” he said. “It was a fun league to watch. I remember back in those days we’d watch NFL games where it was 10-6. You’d watch an AFL game and it was 45-41. You never knew when the game was over.”

Pegula holds a great deal of reverence for the man he succeeds and what the team means to the city of Buffalo. That’s why it was evident he was proud to be the person to step in and silence doubt about the club’s future, while also maintaining, and soon building on its tradition.

“The name of our team will not change. It will stay the Buffalo Bills,” he said. “Owning any professional team is about winning and the primary goal of our ownership will be to win the Super Bowl and bring championships to the City of Buffalo and myself and my family will dedicate ourselves to that. We want to bring a Super Bowl to the Niagara region courtesy of your, our, my Buffalo Bills.”

Arsene Wenger strives to defy critics by seeing the positives in Arsenal’s Champions League absence

content_img

data-js=”article-body” data-insert-mobile-adslot>

Having found themselves eight places and 21 points below Arsenal at the end of the 2015-2016 season, Chelsea ended the 2016-2017 campaign under Antonio Conte four places and 18 points better off than Sunday’s opponents. Arsenal’s FA Cup final victory that denied Conte’s team the domestic double might have mitigated against that reverse but it does beg the question of how Wenger is going to make up the ground with the gruelling added extra of Thursday night football.

When the two sides met in Beijing last month, Arsenal found themselves well-beaten and their performance against Sevilla in the second of two Emirates Cup games last Sunday . It is early days yet but already Wenger is having to deal with the questions over Alexis Sánchez’s future as well as those on his own new contract after yet another turbulent season in front of a divided support.

He did not take well a question about having to justify his own position as manager, an obligation he clearly does ned Victor Lindelof after their Carabao Cup defeat to Manchester City.United trailed their rivals 3-0 at half-time, in the first leg of the Cup semi-final before Marcus Rashford pulled a goal back for the hosts.”This is poor defending from Victor Lindot feel. “I am sorry I am still here. I can understand that you want to kill me but at the moment, I have survived,” he said

“Look, [last season] we won the FA Cup and pton.Pellegrini praised Michail Antonio and matchwinner Sebastien Haller, who combined dangerously together to threaten the Saints throughout as the Chilean switched to a 4-4-2 formation at St Mary’s.The manager said: “Both of them worked very well amade 75 points, and we are of course not happy with it but some teams did worse. When we qualified for the Champions League, people told me: ‘But you didn’t win a trophy.’ Now we won a trophy, and didn’t qualify for the Champions League, and it’s said to me: ‘Why are you not in the Champions League?’ That’s normal to live with but I want to focus on my job and do as well as I can and win absolutely every competition.”

It sounds like Wenger is lukewarm at best about the Europa League, a competition that the club won in 1970 in its very early guise as the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup,. As usual, his objections seem to spring from his opposition to the structure of the competition, which accepts certain eliminated teams from the Champions League into the New Year knockout stages, rather than the benefits it offers to a pragmatic manager.

Asked whether he would take it seriously as a competition, it would be right to say that Wenger hedged his bets. “I will always play a team that has a good chance to win the next game. In the Europa League if we can afford sometimes to rest some players we will do it. But we have to adapt to the level of the competition and see first what kind of group we play in.”

The notion that it might be considered a route into the Champions League was summarily dismissed. “You cannot go into the season and think that. I always was not in favour of that, because I think at some stage it can influence on the championship. If a team is in a position in April where they have more chance to win the Europa League they can let some games go in the championship, and not completely focus on that, on the regularity of the competition.”

“I was always against it [Champions League teams’ entry]. Because apart from Man United, who did win the Europa League, all the years before it was always a team who was kicked out of the Champions League. That’s why I was always against, when we voted in Geneva, I was always against it.”

It did not sound like a man who has his eye on a first European trophy at Arsenal, the one achievement he has not managed in more than 20 years, although, as Mourinho can attest, that may ion Mirandes. The Watford Observer says Aias scored for CD Mirandes last night in a 1-1 draw with Real Zaragoza. The 23-year-old has now scored eight goals in 23 appearances in all competitions this season, including six goals in six games in the Copa change if his team are slipping from contention in the league come spring.

Sunderland 1 Arsenal 4: Pressure mounts on David Moyes as Black Cats humiliated in late capitulation

content_img

data-js=”article-body” data-insert-mobile-adslot>

You can only beat what is put in front of you, of course, and there was something ominous about the way Arsenal moved through the gears, after Jermain Defoe had equalised for Sunderland midway through the second half from the penalty spot.

The Gunners responded to that setback with three goals in just six minutes and 20 seconds as Olivier Giroud came off the bench to score twice and Alexis Sanchez added a second after he had opened the scoring in the first half.

“I am happy with the performance, with the result,” said a pristine looking Wenger. “At some stage, we were questioned with our spirit as well, because we missed many chances.

“At 1-1, of course, you are thinking you have a chance now to lose a game which should be over. But we kept going again and had another go and won in the end in a comfortable way.

Sunderland’s lack of quality is obvious. Their next two games, away at Bournemoutayers are ready for the start of the campaign after a tough preseason.Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino likened the pre-season schedule to the Champions League ter City’s defeat at Burnley has been revealed. The Daily Mail says the pair have been fined by their Leicester team-mates for turning up late to training. Both men were left out of the Foxes side that lost 2-1 against Burnley but Brendan Rodgers insiand having faced Juventus, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, Inter provide thh and at home to Hull City, look crucial if they are going to have any hope of turning things around.

Lose both and manager David Moyes’ future will have to be questioned, no matter how much the club want to give him time. It still seems ridiculous to sack him, because they brought him to do a long term job, but Sunderland have already equalled the worst start to a Premier League season – Manchester City in 1995/6 – and it is not showing any sign of ending.

Sunderland are in the same division – for the time being at least – as Arsenal, but this had the feel of a cup tie against lower league opposition. Having survived more by luck than judgement for the last four years, it seems the Black Cats have used up all their lives.

They began brightly, trying to take the game to Arsenal, but there was little they could do to hurt the visiting defence, who just soaked it all up and waited for the confidence to drain from the home team.

It did not take long as Arsenal scored at the end of a 22-pass move. This Sunderland defence make mistakes and when Alex Oxlaide-Chamberlain skipped around van Patrick Aanholt and sent over a delicious cross, the danger should have been cleared.

Sunderland had three defenders inside the area. Arsenal had just one attacker, but Lamine Kone had no idea where Sanchez was, did not check on him once and then waited to head the ball clear. Sanchez was like a spider waiting for a fly, poised, but unseen.

As the cross left his teammate’s boot, he pounced, dashing in front of the static centre back to glance a header into the top corner. A good goal from an Arsenal point of view A dreadful one from Sunderland’s. That is why they are bottom of the league.

It felt like the game was already over as a contest, but Arsenal did not manage to get the second goal they needed to kill the contest before half-time.

There is always a danger, when you have looked so comfortable, but failed to build a two goal lead that you will be punished. Arsenal were playing in third, possibly second, gear, but they did not create enough going forward.

Sanchez felt he should have had a penalty when he was tugged back by Kone, but he could have run on instead of throwing himself to the floor.

Minutes later, Sunderland were awarded a spot kick after Shkodran Mustafi lost the ball to Duncan Watmore, who was then brought down by Petr Cech. Defoe converted from the spot.

Sunderland’s foothold in the game lasted just six minutes as Arsenal moved back through the gears, Sanchez sent Kieran Gibbs away down the left and his cross was swept in by Olivier Giroud.

The natural order restored, Arsenal flexed their muscles as Giroud headed in a third off the back of his head and Sanchez was able to tap the ball past Jordan Pickford as the Sunderland defence disintegrated.

“I’ll keep doing what I do,” said Moyes. “I’m an experienced manager, I’m not experienced of being quite in this sort of position before, but I’ve had lots o United boss David Moyes is ready to introduce a new disciplined culture at the club.Moyes has declared there will be “zero tolerance” of bad behaviour under his new regime at West Ham.“I’ve come in today and it nearly feels like deja vu,” said tf games in the Premier League  and I’ll keep working them.

“You might not see it, but we had to stick in the game, Arsenal were fantastic, a team of better quality than us. We grew in the game, got back into it, but the players they can bring on, the gap was too big in the end.”

I really don’t like managers being chopped so often but David Moyes has a real job on to deal with the mounting pressure. His team looks lost.

The Stadium of Light is basically the stadium of empty at the moment. Coquelin comes off to give Maitland-Niles some Premier League experience. It genuinely looks like there are more empty seats than spectators left in the ground.

That’s Mr Sanchez celebrating his goal there. Arsenal build up another attack by passing and linking all over the Sunderland half and the defenders clear it away. Arsenal just keep on coming though and any attempts to play in Defoe are utterly pointless – he can’t hold it up on his own or even win headers against those defenders.

Great cross by Oxlade-Chamberlain but what a header that is from Sanchez. An Alan Shearer-esque power drive off the noggin. The ball from the right was perfect – Kone should have done so much better defending it.

Arsenal are made to pass the ball patiently around the Sunderland half in an attempt to get forward. They ping it about quickly and the movement is great.

Sunderland are holding a really high line but have been caught out twice with through-balls already…

Sky Sports are running a very long interview with Petr Cech about that time he had his skull broken and how he likes drumming. His YouTube channel is various videos of him playing drum covers of different songs. The best thing is that you can see him improving over time. Awww.

I cannot believe he’s even considering this, especially with how good Arsenal have looked with Sanchez up front, but Wenger has said he . I do not understand. Giroud is a fine player, scores goals, gets injured, misses all his chances and Arsenal draw 0-0 and finish fourth. He is such a fourth place player, whereas the Sanchez + Ozil partnership is dynamic and exciting.

Today that partnership gets another chance up front. Enjoy it while you can Gunners fans!

This one has a draw written all over it. Sunderland are going to sit deep and keep the doors shut, the windows boarded and the chimney blocked to stop Arsenal getting past them. Without Cazorla pulling the strings Arsenal can become a bit predictable – expect Ozil to drop a lot deeper today to try and influence the passing away from the man marker he’ll have been assigned.

This Premier League match takes place at 12.30pm on Saturday October 29 2016.

At the Stadium of Light..

, and have not won a league match all season. They’ve lost six out of their last seven league matches, and last won a league match in May.

Arsenal by contrast are unbeaten in their last 13 matches and have won eight of their last nine in all competitions.

Sunderland have a dreadful recent record against Arsenal, and have won just one of the last 25 league matches between the two sides ().

They did though earn a 0-0 draw in this equivalent fixture last season, and Arsenal fans will have painful memories of a late Darren Bent equaliser that earned the Black Cats a 1-1 draw in September 2010.

Otherwise though Arsenal have largely been on easy street against Sunderland, and Mesut Ozil will recall fondly making his debut at the Stadium of Light in a 3-1 win three years ago.

Well, how about…

Arsenal have conceded just eight times in 15 visits to Sunderland in the Premier League (including one game at Roker Park). Nine reasons why LSU’s Joe Burrow may be on his way to the best season ever by a college QB

content_img

Best ever? That might be a label worth considering for LSU’s Joe Burrow.

Check that. Best season ever … by a quarterback. It’s worth discussing considering the numbers, the winning, the personality and the transformation of a career, a team and a program.

Six players have thrown for more yards in a season than Burrow’s 5,208. Only one has thrown for more touchdowns in a season (55).

But none of them went from afterthought to projected No. 1 overall pick. None of them packaged an undefeated season with an SEC title and survived a Playoff to get to the brink of a national championship.

That national crown is the last step. Chasing it is a kid from rural Ohio, a transfer from Ohio State who embraced Louisiana, its culture and its team.

“Standing at the 50-yard line before each game and the Saints run out … Drew Brees is gathering his thoughts before he walks in that huddle and gives them a pregame speech,” recalled LSU passing game coordinator Joe Brady, a former Saints offensive assistant. “And you know there is not a person in that stadium or person in that huddle who doesn’t feel like we have an opportunity to win. … We have that at LSU. I feel that way about Joe Burrow.”

What follows are 10 things to consider about Burrow and his incredible 2019 season as we begin that best-ever debate. In the process, CBS Sports mixed in the reaction of various football sources.

That was the year Jameis Winston led Florida State to the national title in the last year lback Aaron Wan-Bissaka was left frustrated by his U21 Euros campaign with England. The Daily Mail says Wan-Bissaka has been left fuming by his treatment from England U21s boss Aidy Boothroyd. The right back was in the process of completing a move fromof the BCS. (Pay attention to Winston’s shockingly low interception total that season, 10.) Before that, it was Cam Newton, almost as a one-man offense for Auburn. Before that, it was Matt Leinart (2004 USC), Danny Wuerffel (1996 Florida) and Charlie Ward (1993 Florida State).

Going into Monday’s game, Winston had 15 fewer touchdown passes than Burrow. Newton had 2,366 fewer passing yards. Leinart finished with 22 fewer touchdown passes. The record for a Heisman-winning quarterback is 48 touchdown passes. Burrow has 55 with one game to go.

“This transformation from a seemingly average guy is truly amazing! Remember, Ohio State let him walk out the door!  … On the run? When was the last time something bad happened when he extended the play? Ability to make plays with his legs? Check. Freakish football season.” — Rick Neuheisel, CBS Sports college football analyst, former Pac-12 coach

Seventeen players have thrown for at least 5,000 yards. Seven have thrown at least 50 touchdown passes. What makes those benchmarks so remarkable is Colt McCoy. In becoming the Heisman runner-up in 2009, the former Texas quarterback completed 76.7 percent of his passes. That record has stood for 11 years. Burrow would have to go 13 of 25 (52 percent) in the CFP National Championship to finish below McCoy’s 2009 mark of 76.7 percent. The last time Burrow finished below 52 percent was 19 games ago in the 2018 Alabama game.

To put it in perspective, Burrow completed 57.8 percent of his passes in 2018 (219 of 379). To reach his 2019 mark of 77.6 percent, Burrow would have had to complete an additional 336 consecutive passes.

In his last two games at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Burrow has thrown 11 touchdown passes. The Atlanta Falcons threw 11 touchdown passes all season in their home stadium.

“Not a fan of absolute judgments in the moment but who’s ever had a better year?! Never had a clunker game this season, either.” — Charles Davis, Fox analyst, former Tennessee defensive back

This is real simple to put in perspective. Brennan set that record in a conference that no longer exists — the Western Athletic Conference.Twelve of those 58 scores came against four Power Five schools: Alabama, Arizona State, Purdue and Oregon. The rest came against the likes of Eastern Illinois, New Mexico State and Idaho.

Burrow has faced 12 Power Five opponents (throwing 46 touchdown passes), including nine SEC foes (37 TDs).Oh, and there were seven scoring passes against Oklahoma in the Peach Bowl semifinal. Burrow needs four touchdown passes vs. Clemson to break Brennan’s record. Five would give him 60.Fasten your seat belts. He’s thrown four in a game nine times in his career. Five times Burrow has thrown five touchdown passes.

“Never seen anything close to his performances in a single season!” — Steve Clarkson, owner of Dreammaker quarterback camps, throwing coach for Leinart

One of the results was Burrow becoming arguably the best quarterback in the last five years. Since Pro Football Focus has begun keeping stats in 2014, Burrow’s had the best season in Wins Above Average (2.52). Ohio State’s Justin Fields was second this season at 1.78. “He’s the highest-graded passer under pressure and is setting LSU and PFF College records in the process of a historic season, the likes of which we haven’t seen,” PFF wrote in November 2019.

“Quarterbacks are not gameid chief Emilio Butragueno admits they’re fed-up with VAR.Butragueno was left frustrated by the use of VAR in Los Blancos’ 0-0 draw at home to Real Betis on Saturday night, with a Zou Feddal handball the subject of much debate.”We are confused about managers. You don’t come to LSU to manage games. That’s not what we are looking for. You come to excel at the biggest stage.” — Joe Brady

“Impressive but also a product of the times. Spread offenses/formations have given these guys such easy completions. Not to mention protection for pass catchers with targeting. Quarterbacks can make tighter window throws not worrying about repercussions.” — Brady Quinn, CBS Sports HQ analyst, former Notre Dame quarterback

“We have five guys in routes every single snap, and it’s tough to cover. You kind of have to pick your poison. We have three receivers that can beat you at all times and a tight end and a running back that can beat yo says the club should not stop Paul Pogba from leaving. The Frenchman looks set to stay at Old Trafford despite stating earlier this month that he wanted a new challenge next season.Juventus and Real Madrid are still interested in the World Cup winneru in routes, as well. We’re a tough match-up for a lot of people, and then I just try to get the ball in their hands on time and accurately and then let them do the rest.” — Joe Burrow

“LSU fans have always had this running joke that the answer to every trivia question was always Billy Cannon. So now we have a new answer.” — Jason Ramezan, former LSU vice president of alumni engagement

Georgia football’s Mount Rushmore: Who stands next to Herschel Walker?

content_img

When you consider Georgia football in 2016, you think about one thing: running backs for days. Nick Chubb, Sony Michel and Co. will lead the Bulldogs’ offensive attack once again. The long lineage of great backs to pass through Athens, though, is where the program’s Mount Rushmore begins.

Put simply, you cannot think of Georgia football without thinking of Herschel Walker. From his first season running over defenders to his Heisman Trophy reception, Walker left a mark on not only Georgia, but the SEC and all of .

Walker’s coach, Vince Dooley, also makes an appearance, but like other programs featured in our series, the Bulldogs’ “top four” was heavy on players.

There is no player more synonymous with Georgia football than Walker, nor is there any one more beloved. Walker is not only the greatest player in the history of the program, he is one of the all-time greats in college football. In other words, this Mount Rushmore would be glaringly incomplete without him as the first and most recognizable face.

Listing Walker’s accomplishments would take pages, but the important ones include a Heisman Trophy in 1982. He was the program’s second Heisman winner but finished in the top three of the Heisman voting in each of his three seasons in Athens. Additionally, he won the Walter Camp and Maxwell Awards, and was a three-time consensus All-American.

Walker’s post-college life was eclectic, to say the least. In addition to his time in the , Walker was a MMA fighter and a member of the United States Olympic bobsled team in the 1992 Winter Olympue Marseille striker Habib Bamogo has confirmed he’s now working as a France-based scout for Everton.Bamogo admits he’s been talent spotting at youth level for the Toffees for the past year.He told Foot Mercato: “It’s going to be a year in January, sics.

Accomplishments: 1982 Heisman Trophy, consensus All-American (three times), Walter Camp Award, Maxwell Award, SEC Player of the Year (three times)

Walker may be Georgia’s most famous player and Heisman winner, but Sinkwich was the first Bulldog to receive college football’s most prestigious trophy. In that sense, ina management are willing to include Jean-Clair Todibo in their offer for PSG star Neymar.Barca have made multiple offers this week for the Brazil captain, but are yet to strike terms.Yahoo Sport France reports Todibo’s agents have confirmed Barca hat’s also hard to imagine a Georgia Mount Rushmore without Sinkwich on it. Sinkwich led the country in rushing in 1941 (1,103 yards) and totaled nearly 2,200 total yards in his Heisman-winning effort the following year, which set a NCAA record at the time.

Accomplishments: 1942 Heisman Trophy, consensus All-American (twice), SEC Player of the Year

Georgia claims a few great coaches, including Mark Richt and Wallace Butts, but no coach in program history has a longer tenure than Dooley. Over the course of more than two decades, Dooley won 201 games, which still ranks among the top 20 of FBS coaches to this day. In all, Dooley won about 72 percent of his games.

He also s focus again. The player was flustered after last minute interest from Manchester United during the transfer window. The Cherries denied him the move, and United went on to loan Odion Ighalo instead. But Francis thinks that King will bounce back.Francicoached Georgia to it second claimed national title in 1980 while producing a dozen consensus All-Americans during his time with the program, including Walker. There just isn’t a more prolific or longer-tenured coach at Georgia than Dooley.

Accomplishments: 1980 national championship, SEC Coach of the Year (five times), AFCA, NFAA and Walter Camp Coach of the Year (1980)

Georgia has had its share of great players over the years, but few are more decorated than Pollack. Champ Bailey had a legitimate case here, but Pollack was more well-known for what he did in college. For that reason, Pollack squeaks into the program’s immortalized top four.

From the start, Pollack was a force in the SEC. He became the program’s all-time leader with 36 sacks, a number that still ranks among the best all-time in the FBS. His “zero-yard” interception for a touchdown against South Carolina (seen below) remains one of the most famous plays in Georgia football history. As far as disruptive defensive players go, Pollack is the best to ever pass through Athens.

Accomplishments: Consensus All-American (twice), SEC Player of the Year (twice), Hendricks Award (twice), Lott Trophy, Lombardi Award, All-SEC (three times)

Just missed the cut: Champ Bailey, Mark Richt

Andersen said that he had seen himself as a Badgers “lifer,” but that because of a multitude of factors — most notably the positive “direction” of the Beavers program — he believed that Oregon State was the best “fit overall” for his career.

“In my mind, I know this is where I was supposed to go,” he said, “and that’s the easiest way for me to sum it up.”

Andersen vehemently denied that interference from Badgers athletic director Barry Alvarez in any way motivated his decision.

“That’s absolutely not true,” he said. “Barry Alvarez is a Hallf of Fame athletic director just like he is a coach, in my opinion. Does he want to be involved in football? Just like he does with basketball and women’s hockey and men’s hockey and so on …

“He does not stick his nose into football. He wants to make sure the student-athletes are taken care of, and that’s the bottom line.”

But even though the game itself wasn’t the best-executed football you’re ever going to see, it had enough moments to warrant the C+ grade. Even if some of those moments were just for the belly laughs at the sheer idiocy of it all.

Tulsa made things official ofered a return to football in Italy.Emery was offered the job at Everton before Carlo Ancelotti’s appointment, but felt it came too soon – just days after being axed by the Gunners earlier this season. However, Corriere dello Sport says Emery is undern Monday morning, announcing that coach Bill Blankenship will not be back with the program in 2015.

“We are grateful fortart in Sunday’s 1-0 win over Newcastle United. The inclusions of Nelson and Willock meant it was the first time Arsenal had named two English teenagers in their starting XI for a Premier League game for the first time since February 1998.And Emery sa the service and commitment of coach Blankenship to our university, our student-athletes and our community, but we have decided that the program needs to go in a different d his breakthrough at Chelsea with a new deal. The 19-year-old right-back’s current contract runs until 2022 and he will be given improved terms to bring him closer into line with the club’s first-team stars.James has made 14 appearances for the Blues irection,” said Tulsa athletic director Derrick Gragg.

Gragg also said that a search committee would be formed immediately as the school looks for Blankenship’s replacement.

Blankenship spent four seasons at Tulsa, but the last two failed to live up to the promise of his first two years on campus. Blankenship took over the Tulsa program after Todd Graham left for the Pittsburgh job following the 2010 season, and he went 19-8 in his first two seasons at the school. The success faded quickly, though, as the Golden Hurricane were only 5-19 the last two seasons, including a 2-10 mark in 2014.
