Bills Today: A bigger role for Justin Hunter?

content_img

Here’s the Bills news of note for Nov. 29th

All he’s done since joining the Bills is catch touchdowns. Of his seven receptions for Buffalo this season, four of Justin Hunter’s catches have gone for scores including last Sunday’s game winner in the fourth quarter.

“I think so,” said Ryan of more playing time for Hunter. “All he does is catch touchdowns. I remember that quote. Just like we had T-D Mike (Gillislee), now we’ve got TD Hunter, touchdown Hunter. He gives us a huge red zone threat, but also I think he does warrant more playing time. With some ofity to sign Lloyd Kelly, who joined Bournemouth from Bristol City earlier this week. The Sun claims Liverpool have moved their sights towards Leeds United teenager Leif Davis. The 19-year-old made only four Championship appearances this season but has the injuries we have there’s no reason he shouldn’t be able to play more.”

Robert Woods is still dealing with by coach Quique Setien.Setien replaced Ernesto Valverde at the turn of the year.”Honestly, after seeing the last few Barcelona matches, I haven’t seen any improvement since they sacked Valverde and brought in Setien,” he admitted. ‘With the great pla knee injury suffered in Week 11 and Walt Powell exited Sunday’s game with an ankle injury. Percy Harvin is dealing with debilitating migraine headaches that kept him out of the Jaguars game. That leaves the team with four healthy receivers in Hunter, Marquise Goodwin, Brandon Tate and Sammy Watkins.

Through the first half of the season the Bills had a top five red zone defense. Through the first six games of the season Buffalo allowed just six touchdowns on 18 red zone possessions by their opponents, good for just a 33 percent success rate to rank first in the NFL.

In the last five games however, the success rate for opponents has skyrocketed to 81 percent (13-16), with the last three opponents a perfect eight for eight scoring touchdowns once theala remains high on Manchester United’s shopping list.Tuttosport says United are willing to reopen negotiations to sign Dybala from Juve.United failed to sign the Argentine in the summer window but remain on the hunt for a new forward after selling Ry reached Buffalo’s 20-yard line. The Bills now rank 19th in red zone defense.

So what gives?

“That’s an area in particular that we have to get better at,” said Ryan. “We’ve already studied where we’re failing in the red zone and I think we’re amongst the leaders in the league from the 20 all the way down to the five-yard line, but it’s when we get inside the five-yard line they’ve scored 12 times on 22 plays. So that’s a huge area of concern.”

Buffalo’s defensive staff is already devising ways to improve their performance in goal line situations, and it hasn’t all been short yardage runs. Two weeks ago at Cincinnati, Andy Dalton scored on a two-yard run outside the tackle box, but he also threw a one-yard fade to the corner for their other red zone score to go two-for-two against the Bills.

“There are some things to look at obviously,” said Ryan. “Everybody runs the same call down there we just have to get better playing down there. That’s an area where you can’t focus a whole lot, but that area right there is killing us. So we have to do some internal things down there so we can get better there.”

“I wish we knew, but that’s when you’ve got to be at your best to stop them, but unfortunately we have given up quite a few of those, two back to back this past game,” said Ryan. “You’ve just got to line up and play every play and find a way to get them off the field. That was the thing that was disappointing to me (Sunday).”

Ryan felt the defense was particularly hurt by the read option keepers and scramble runs by Jaguars QB Blake Bortles. He was Jacksonville’s leading rusher with 81 yards on eight carries to average better than 10 yards per rush. Bortles converted two third downs for the Jaguars with his legs.

“I thought we had some calls set up to give our coverage a chance and the quarterback makes some big runs on us to convert third downs,” said Ryan. “Those are killers. I’ve mentioned how that can be frustrating for the defense when you have them all covered up and then the quarterback makes a play. Now we know how other teams feel when they play us because Tyrod does the same thing. We’ve got to balance up the rushing lanes and not let these quarterbacks take off on us.”

Fortunately for the Bills, Oakland QB Derek Carr, doesn’t run with nearly the success that Bortles has this season. He’s averaged less than two yards per carry.

West Ham interested in signing Steven N’Zonzi, confirms David Moyes

Asked whether or not he and the West Ham owners have discussed January deals, Moyes replied: “I speak to them quite regularly. We’d like to add to the squad if we can and in the position in the table that we are we’ll need to.

“But finding the right players and looking for them is a bit different. Sometimes the ones you might want are not available at this time. When I say we know who the targets are, I think the club knows who we want to go for and positionally what we’d like to do.

“I think what changes is if you go for your target and you can’t get him, what do you do? You’ll have to look for another target. Hopefully we’ll have two or three in consideration.”

Despite having gone three games unbeaten, means West Ham are only a point above third-from-bottom Bournemouth ahead of their Boxing Day clash at the Vitality Stadium.

Both Andy Carroll and Javier Hernandez were used as substitutes against Newcastle, and Moyes has not ruleas spoken about the promotion of Oskar Buur into the first team squad. As Wolves prepare for their Europa League round of 16 clash against Espanyol, Nuno has given a chance to another youngster. It is not the first time the Portuguese manager has trustd out one of the strikers starting at Bournemouth.

“Up until Newcastle, the players have been playing well and showing what they can do. When that happens you reward them and keep playing them and I don’t think anybody can question that.

“But I do know what Andy Carroll and Chicharito’s qualities are. I think the way the team has been set up has nsists his commitment is total.Asked if he has had offers to leave during his time as manager, Pochettino said: “Yes, plenty. From everywhere. Daniel [Levy] knows.”He added: “Daniel knows very well our commitment to the club is massive. It is more thbeen better suited to the quicker boys playing up front. There will be other occasions when have to change the team and the set-up will suit Andy or Chicharito at different times.”

How excited should Arsenal be about latest group of youngsters? Scouting report from Doncaster Carabao Cup win

content_img

data-js=”article-body” data-insert-mobile-adslot>

His confidence and ability going forward was evident all night, with his bursts up the right flank causing havoc in the Doncaster defence and a couple of efforts drawing smart saves from the visitors’ goalkeeper Ian Lawlor. Defensively though, Nelson was shaky and he was twice badly caught out in the second half to gift Doncaster openings that more clinical forwards would have profited from.

There was a moment in the first half that summarised the youngster’s night, when he made a mess of a clearance before moments later using his searing pace to dribble away with the ball and then play a perfectly-weighted pass up the line for Theo Walcott.

The important things to remember with Nelson are his age and inexperience. He is only 17, and prior to the summer had never played in defence. Fortunately for him, Wenger has quite the pedigree in converting naturally attacking players into excellent full-backs, including Hector Bellerin, Ashley Cole and Lauren.

With his speed, athleticism and eagerness to get involved in his side’s attacks, Nelson is in many ways the prototype Wengerian full-back. ringing and career in a new autobiography. The talented winger partnered with Simon Zwartkuis to release “Heart of a Lion” recently. In the book, Depay speaks about his high profile failure at Manchester United, his issues with Louis Van Gaal and JoseExpect to see more of him before the season is out, especially with Arsenal’s other back-up right wing-back options either on loan (Carl Jenkinson) or out of favour (Mathieu Debuchy).

Ainsley Maitland-Niles

At 20 years old and having made seven appearances last season, Ainsley Maitland-Niles is a relative veteran compared to Nelson. Maitland-Niles, a local lad who joined Arsenal at the age of six, is known for his versatility but said in the pre-match programme that he views himself as a central midfielder.

Having played as a defender for Arsenal previously, Maitland-Niles started as a left wing-back against Doncaster, which he also did against Cologne last week.

Like Nelson, it was clear early on that Maitland-Niles had more interest in attacking than defending. He got forward very effectively in the first half, and put in a number of dangerous crosses as he combined well with Alexis Sanchez down the Arsenal left.

In the second half, Maitland-Niles was more disciplined, as he recognised the need to hold his position and support the callow Josh Dasilva, who had come on at half-time in central defence. Maitland-Niles also showed superb speed and awareness to charge back and deny Alfie May after Nelson had been horribly caught out.

Wenger says that Maitland-Niles is "close" to playing more regularly, while the player himself said on Wednesday that he is targeting a few Premier League stars this season. He certainly looks ready to step up, and could offer a solution to the defensive midfield area where Arsenal look so vulnerable.

Josh Dasilva

When Calum Chambers was forced off with a hip injury at half-time, Nacho Monreal seemed the obvious choice to come on as the left-sided centre-back in the Arsenal back three. Instead Wenger turned to Josh Dasilva, an 18-year-old attacking midfielder, who only broke into the Arsenal under-21 side towards the end of last season.

Besides being physically imposing and left-footed, Dasilva – another English academy graduate – looked about as equipped for the role as the FA investigating misconduct.

His first two contributions were to pass the ball straight to an opposition player, and then get nutmegged in front of his manager. Shortly after, he got himself in a tangle and was turned by Matty Blair, before Per Mertesacker exhorted him to focus and move up alongsid Hazard will take when he arrives from Chelsea. The Sun says Hazard will wear the No 7 shirt when he finally signs for Real Madrid. The Chelsea ace wants his £115million deal wrapped up – as does Bernabeu president Florentino Perez.Even though Hazare the rest of the back three. At times it felt as though Dasilva had been brought on to give Mertesacker some practice for his role as academy manager, which he will start next season.

But as the second half wore on, Dasilva settled down and began to show his technical proficiency and comfort on the ball. He is clearly very talented, and will hn’t sabotage Chelsea’s run to the Europa League final over their pursuit of Eden Hazard.Marca says Hazard has ‘already agreed’ terms on a move to Real Madrid this summer and an announcement will be made on May 12 unless the Blues reach the Europa Leaave learned a huge amount from playing out of position, and at a level higher than what he is used to.

It would be a surprise if Dasilva’s future was at the back, but then Wenger did a similar conversion job on Kolo Toure, who arrived as a winger and became an ‘Invincible’ central defender.

Bills DE Chris Kelsay calls it a career

Defensive end Chris Kelsay has said for years that he wanted to spend his entire playing career with the Buffalo Bills. On Wednesday he made sure that would be the case. After 10 years with the club Kelsay announced his retirement Wednesday.

“I want to thank Mr. Wilson for the opportunity he gave me 10 years ago to be a Buffalo Bill,” saisays Arsenal are confident of completing a loan deal for Ceballos – and beating Tottenham to a second summer signing.Gunners boss Unai Emery has targeted Ceballos to join Arsenal on a one-year loan deal to bolster his squad and become a much-needed ad Kelsay. “One of my goals was to finish my career with the team that drafted me and that came to fruition. I feel very blessed to say that.

“The Buffalo Bills’ fans are the best in the NFL. Having played in every NFL stadium over my 10 years, there are no other fans like the ones we play in front of at the Ralph. It’s inspiring, it’s emotional and it’s exciting every moment you step on the field,” Kelsay continued.

“Your teammates are a big reason why you do this. Being around long enough you establish a lot of lifelong relationships, not just in the locker room but around the building. That’s something I’ll carry with me and cherish for the rest of my life.”

Kelsay appeared in 147 games for the Bills since the time the club made him a secondnham boss Mauricio Pochettino insists he’ll need to utilise his squad depth this season. The manager admits there is a frustration over their lack of consistency. He said, “England is a very competitive country. Kelsay also ranks eighth in team history in forced fumbles with eight and is tied for first in team annals in career safeties with two along with Ron McDole.

The Nebraska product was a locker room leader for the defense and remarkably durable throughout his career. After missing just three games in his first eight seasons, Kelsay missed 11 total in 2011 and 2012. After sustaining a torn ligament in his neck in the middle of last season he was eventually placed on injured reserve for the last four weeks of the year.

Rafa Benitez remains untouchable at Newcastle as he insists ‘2nd place would be fine with me’

content_img

data-js=”article-body” data-insert-mobile-adslot>

However, there is also no disguising the fact, Benitez has a squad that is the envy of the division, with the highest wage bill seen outside the top flight. A failure to go up as champions will be just that, regardless of the relief that will pour out of St James’ Park as soon as promotion is assured.

“Second place would be fine with me,” said Benitez, when asked if the title was Brighton’s to lose, although midfielder Isaac Hayden perhaps gave a more honest appraisal of the situation.

“It always matters if you finish first or second doesn’t made eight Premier League appearances and played a crucial role out a January loan move for Vinicius Junior.Looking ahead to Los Blancos’ clash with Alaves at the Estadio de Mendizorrotza on Saturday, Zidane hinted that Vinicius may get his chance to play in the coming weeks.”Vinicius is not going to leave,” Zid in Liverpool’s victory over Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup but he is now being considered by LaLiga club Real Betis, according to Estadio Deportivo. Adrian is being considered as a signiit?” said the former Arsenal and Hull City player. “As much as you want to say it doesn’t matter or promotion is the main thing, and of course it is, everyone wants to get promoted, that’s the aim.

“But I think there will be a little bit of a sour taste if we weren’t to go on and win the title. But at the end of the day, promotion is the main objective and you don’t get promoted without winning the games.

“It doesn’t matter about Brighton or Huddersfield, as long as we perform and we get the points necessary in the last few games we are promoted anyway.”

Despite Newcastle’s slightly surprising vulnerability, particularly at home, Benitez has rarely stopped smiling since he became manager.

It is all part of the charm offensive and if it looks forced at times, there is no questioning the positive impact he has had since he arrived in March last year.

Even if they fail to return to the Premier League as champions, Benitez has healed wounds at a club that was tearing itself apart before he arrived 13 months ago. Promotion, in whatever form it is achieved, will prevent financial meltdown, as well justify his own extravagant salary and reputation.

Benitez has united Newcastle with it supporters again and has therefore been spared the sort of criticism that would have been fired at others in his position during the various setbacks this season. It is that calmness under pressure that makes him ideal and two wins and a draw from their remaining four games, will guarantee promotion, with Huddersfield eigndes. The Sun says Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has handed United a transfer boost by cooling his interest in Portuguese goal machine Fernandes.Guardiola is making a long-term successor to Fernandinho his No1 priority in the summer window. It meaht points behind with only 15 left to play for.

“After the performance against Leeds, you say to anyone who is a Newcastle fan, that the team will do well in the next games and get the points we need, they would say yes please,” said Benitez.

“I am not pleased because we could not get the three points, but I am happy with the performance and the way the players have reacted.

“We have had a defeat [sic] and made some mistakes but we should have won easily and the performance of the team was so good that we have to be positive.”

Mary Wilson helps impact girls with sports

Saturday, Mary Wilson and the Buffalo Bills celebrated the eighth annual Westerto Nicolas Pepe to edge ahead in the race for the Lille striker.Pepe will sign a five-year contract at Arsenal having been offered wages of £105,000 a week after at one stage it looked like he would be heading to Italy, says the Arsenal-Nicolas-Pepen New York Girls in Sports program. The platform, founded by Mary Wilson, wife of Buffalo Bills Owner Ralph Wilson Jr., began in 2006 with tr Inter beat Serie C side Gozzano 2-0 on Sunday. He struck four goals on his Inter debut last weekend, but the focus since then has been on his weight.Nonetheless, the striker went some way towards answering critics as he started up top with Lautaro Mhe goal of enriching young girl’s lives with sports.

“It’s become more than I ever expected,” said Wilson. “For many of the girls, it’s their first time attending, many of them could have come a total of eight times. I’m hoping that even a little bit makes an impact.”

The WNY Girls in Sports program, hosted in partnership with the United Way of Buffalo and Erie County and the Girl Scout Council of WNY invites 250 Buffalo Public School girls ages 9-12 from “Closing the Gap” schools to the Buffalo Bills Healthy Zone Fieldhouse for an afternoon of sports.

Girls rotate in stations around the Bills Healthy Zone Fieldhouse trying old sports and learning new ones, from soccer, golf, track, volleyball, and tennis, to basketball, agility exercises, Double Dutch and Zumba.

Wilson, who has always been active in sports began the program to teach adolescents the life lessons that sports offers. Mary learned the structure sports provides at an early age. At age 60, she was the top ranked tennis player in the country. Today, she loves to share her passion with the girls, helping them learn core qualities such as discipline, sportsmanship and working as a team.

“Sports impact your whole life,” Wilson told buffalobills.com. “Learning how to work together… there are a lot of times you’re going to lose in life and you need to be able to move forward from there. There’s no doubt that for me sports has given me more than I have given it, and this is my way to pay it back.”

The program coincides with the NFL and Buffalo Bills PLAY 60 initiative, encouraging kids to get out and play at least 60 minutes per day.

“Whether it’s running or going to the gym, sports makes a difference, and affects you in a positive way,” said Wilson.

And Western New York Girls in Sports wouldn’t be what it is without the volunteers. Tlkeeper Anders Lindegaard insists there’s no one individual to blame for the club’s slide since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.Lindegaard stayed with United under David Moyes before leaving during Louis van Gaal’s time in charge. He told the London Evhe program has gathered a vast following of community organizations eager to help out. This Saturday, over 80 volunteers from the University at Buffalo, Canisius College, Medaille College, Upstate NY Jr. Golf – First Tee of WNY, Niagara Frontier Jr. Olympic Volleyball Club, Buffalo Soccer Club, Girls on the Run, United Way, and members of the Buffalo Bills Strength and Conditioning Department attended the event to encourage the young girls.

The annual WNY Girls in Sports clinic takes place twice per year, once in the spring and once in the fall.

Buffalo Bills running back C.J. Spiller remembers his mom’s home cooking and her sweet potato pie for his Thanksgiving. This and many other Thanksgiving memories were stirred up at the Northwest Buffalo Community Center (NWBCC) on November 23, 2010 as the Buffalo Bills Toyota Rookie Club served their 10th Annual Rookie Club Thanksgiving dinner for over 300 children and their families.

The senior cornerback has five interceptions this season, tied for thee his Manchester United teammates defeat Tottenham last night. The injured midfielder was in attendance at Old Trafford as his side beat Tottenham 2-1 in the Premier League.Marcus Rashford was the matchwinner for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, scoring b second-most in the FBS. He also is tied for second in passes defended per game (1.88). By virtue of his play, he has been named one of 10 semifinalists for the Jim Thorpe Award, which goes to the best defensive back in college football.

In addition, Tierney has factored in that San Diego State has been excellent on defense this year. Through nine games, the Aztecs have held every opponent below its season point and total offense averages. They rank eighth in the country in both scoring defense (14.4 points per game) and total defense (277.1 yards per game).

But just because the Aztecs may have the edge on paper does not guarantee they will cover the San Diego Stxis Claude-Maurice from Lorient. The Geordies join Arsenal, West Ham and Sevilla in the hunt for the Ligue 2 man, says the Arsenal-Alexis-Claude-Maurice-Lorient” target=”_blank”>Daily Star.Claude-Maurice scored 14 goals in 16 Ligue 2 appearances last ate vs. Fresno State spread on Friday.

The Bulldogs have scored at least 30 points in four straight games. Only seven other teams in the country have a longer streak of scoring 30 points than Fresno State. Much of the success can be attributed to an improved rushing attack, as over the last four games, the Bulldogs have averaged 223.5 rushing yards per game (6.3 per carry) and scored 18 touchdowns.

In addition, Fresno State has enjoyed recent success against the Aztecs. The Bulldogs have won the last two meetings between the teams by a combined score of 50-17. The last time these teams met in San Diego, in 2017, Fresno State whipped the Aztecs, 27-3.

We can tell you Tierney is leaning over, but his much stronger play is on the spread. He’s found a critical x-factor that makes one side of the spread hit hard on Friday. He’s sharing what it is, and who to back, only at SportsLine.

How two was better than one all night for Alabama vs. Oklahoma in the 2018 Orange Bowl

content_img

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The Heisman Trophy winner ran circles around the No. 1 team in the country on Saturday night in the Orange Bowl. Kyler Murray made spectacular downfield throws, dizzying, darting runs and looked like, well, a Heisman Trophy winner.

But his entire performance was a postmortem show. The death blow had been delivered long before Murray staetired from international football. The midfielder, who has been in four World Cup squads and won 80 caps, joined League One side Southend United in the summer from Scottish Premiership club Hibernian.”It has been a privilege to be involved with the Srted tearing apart No. 1 Alabama as the Tide took a 28-0 lead early in the second quarter. And it wasn’t just the Heisman runner-up who took it to No. 4 Oklahoma early and often at the start of the game. It was a player across the line of scrimmage who also has a case for being considered the best player in the country.

Tua Tagovailoa, lining up behind center, and Quinnen Williams, lining up in front of center on defense, gave the Sooners 17 minutes of hell. By the time OU had its footing, even six straight scoring possessions weren’t enough to erase the deficit Tagovailoa, Williams and their supporting cast had created.

The beauty of the performance of both Tagovailoa and Williams is the way they unlock the rest of Nick Saban’s mighty roster. Tagovailoa was masterful, almost perfect, completing 24-of-27 attempts for 318 yards passing with  four touchdowns and no interceptions. Wide receiver Devonta Smith was his favorite target, and he jabbed the Oklahoma defense with slants for 104 yards on six catches. In total, a 2018 team record nine players caught passes for the Tide, including backup quarterback Jalen Hurts.

By his own admission, Tagovailoa was only 80-85 percent healthy on Wednesday. About 72 hours later, he looked 100 percent by any human standard. He was active in the pocket, successful scrambling and precise as a passer. Even when he did experience his first serious contact on the Tide’s second drive of the game, he threw a touchdown pass one play later. After some injury-hampered outings against Mississippi State, Auburn and Georgia, Tua looks like Tua again, and the offense is back to juggernaut status.

Of course, Oklahoma has a way of bringing out the best in an opposing offense. This is, after all, the same Sooners team that gave up 40 to Kansas. It also has a tendency to bring out the worst in a deer became a regular in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.He said: “Of course it’s hard to get to a big team.“But then it’s harder to stay there because you are competing with a lot of footballers that are such hard workers.“When you get to the big clfense, though. It even made Alabama look very uncharacteristic on Saturday but not before Williams got his paws on it for 17 minutes.

During that decisive 28-0 start, Williams was dominant. Like Tagovailoa, Williams’s domination helped to spread the production around. He only had one tackle himself on the night, but he was creating chaos on nearly every snap in that first quarter.

Behind Williams and the rest of that Alabama defensive front, Oklahoma’s award-winning offensive line looked overmatched. It took a full quarter for that unit to adjust to the best defender in . By the time it did, Oklahoma had been outgained 200-24, giving up two sacks and going 0 for 3 on third down tries. And it was down by three touchdowns.

Alabama’s two stars were better than Oklahoma’s one. It’s two units — including a defense able to contain Murray, other Premier League sides want to sign Butland, but have been put off by Stoke’s valuation, according to the Birmingham Mail. The Potters want more than £20 million for the 25-year-old, which no one is willing to pay.Stoke boss Nathan Jones confirm if only for a quarter-plus — were better than one. Alabama was better than Oklahoma, and it was clear from the start that what we all expected rang true: The Sooners were good but flawed.

And in this era of college football, with Alabama and Clemson playing at such an elite level, flawed teams need not apply.

Georgia vs. Kentucky odds, line: 2018 college football picks, predictions from proven model that called Texas’ upset

content_img

An SEC East title is up for grabs Saturday as the No. 6 Georgia Bulldogs visit the No. 11 Kentucky Wildcats in a marquee showdown on CBS at 3:30 p.m. ET. The Bulldogs are looking to overcome another challenge in their quest to make a return visit to the SEC title game, and perhaps a second consecutive trip to the four-team playoffs. But standing in their way is a Kentucky club that could play spoiler and build on what has been a breakout season. The Bulldogs are 9.5-point favorites in the latest Georgia vs. Kentucky odds, down from openers as high as -10.5 in some markets. The Over-Under for total points scored is offered at 47.5, up significantly after opening at 44 points. Before you lock in your Georgia vs. Kentucky picks, check out the results from the SportsLine Projection Model.

The SportsLine Projection Model simulates every FBS game 10,000 times, and those who have followed it have seen massive returns. Over the past three years, this proprietary computer model has generated a jaw-dropping $4,210 profit for $100 bettors on its top-rated point-spread picks.

The model made some huge calls in Week 9, including nailing outrightid de Gea this summer.Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will also survey homegrown talent Dean Henderson, who is set to rejoin newly-promoted Sheffield United for another year as he gains Premier League experience, says the Daily Mail. French champions PS upset of No. 6 . It also was all over Georgia (-6.5) covering against Florida, and recommended (+12) against , as well as Kentucky (+7) against Missouri. Anyone who has followed it is way up.

Now the model has crunched the numbers for Georgia vs. Kentucky. We can tell you it’s leaning Under, and it also has a strong pick against the spread, saying one side hits almost 55 percent of the time. You can only see that pick at SportsLine.

Kentucky coach Mark Stoops was considered on the hot seat after failing to produce a winning record in each of his first three seasons. The heat cooled down after he led the Wildcats to seven wins and bowl berths in each of the past two seasons. The Wildcats have already matched that win total by notching two SEC victories as a double-digit underdog against Florida and Mississippi State.

The Wildcats have transformed from a passing-based attack to one that features a power run game, and the results have been impressive. Junior Benny Snell leads the SEC with 935 yards and nine touchdowns. But perhaps Kentucky’s biggest strides have been made on the defensiveadrid has cooled. The Brazilian youngster was expected to join Atletico in January, ahead of rival interest from Arsenal and Chelsea. However, Guimaraes’ latest comments will offer encouragement to both London giants.”My representatives have told me th side, as it ranks second in the country in scoring defense, allowing just 13 points per contest.

Just because Kentucky has made huge strides this season, doesn’t mean it is ready to stay within the spread against Georgia in a matchup with so much on the line.

The Bulldogs had a letdown against two weeks ago and paid for it with a blowout loss. But last week, they gave perhaps their most impressive performance of the season in taking down the improved Gators. threw for 240 e for the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) presidency.El Larguero says Casillas has already communicated his decision to the National Sports Council. He will be Luis Rubiales’ rival in the next presidential elections. In a poll conducted by MARCA, 94yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in an efficient outing. Georgia managed 189 rushing yards against a stout Florida defense, led by 104 and a touchdown.

The reigning East champions also have far more experience in critical matchups such as these. They’ll look to use that experience to pull off a convincing win that will not only clinch a spot in Atlanta, but also boost their College Football Playoff hopes.

Kyler Murray playing for Oklahoma is equal parts possibility and hypocrisy from NCAA

content_img

quarterback will be making close to $5 million this year. That’s a fact, and perhaps a record for the Sooners’ . Somehow, the pillars of amateurism haven’t collapsed just yet.

You know, the pillars that say money is the root of all evil in college athletics, unless it is being made by those who control college athletics.

The pillars that hold up the NCAA’s amateur ideal. The disparate ideals that get a kid suspended taking a lunch from a booster, but allow that same millionaire to win a Heisman Trophy.

The pillars that prop up the NCAA’s indefensible version of amateurism.

The irony of Murray being an amateur college quarterback and a professional baseball outfielder at the same time is rife with equal parts possibility and hypocrisy.

Murray was by the Oakland Athletics. In the midst of competing for the starting quarterback job at Oklahoma, Murray signed his baseball contract on Friday. As a surprise top-10 pick, he will play one more season of before playing baseball for pay.

NCAA rules allow professionals in one sport to receive compensation while retaining college eligibility in another. Nothing new there except to question Oakland’s wisdom in allowing its top pick to put his body and baseball career at risk for one more season under center.

The likes of John Elway and have played pro baseball and college football at the same time, but perhaps never at this powerful of a program, at college football’s most important position or for this much money.

Murray signed for a reported $4.7 million, took batting practice with the A’s then declared, “Right now, it’s about getting ready to go win a [football] national championship.”

Just so as the Sooners know who’s paying for the after party.

Whether Murray wins the starting job at Oklahoma is sort of irrelevant. It’s what he represents. Whatever money he gets, he has earned. It’s that his teammates pretty much can’t (legally) earn a dime.

Aside from the head coaches and perhaps a coordinator or two, Murray will be the highest paid person on the field at his games this fall.

He will be a highly-compensated symbol for a system that has never been more under attack. How do you justify not paying players something further when a defensive coordinator ( Dave Aranda) is making more than 80 head coaches ($2.5 million)?

How do you deny them something more when last year it was revealed the .

“The optics are what the writers make of them,” Delany said smugly.

How is a scholarship enough when 29 NCAA football players have died — mostly in workouts — since 2000?

The walls are closing in on the NCAA. The administrators who continue to defend the system just have to know where they escape hatch is.

It’s been less than four years since a district court judge found the NCAA was in violation of anti-trust laws in the landmark O’Bannon trial. It seems inevitable that sooner or later players are going to be able to earn something from their name, image and likeness.

The argument against is practically neanderthal. president Harris Pastides testified in the O’Bannon case that payments “would create a wedge between those student athletes who receive the funds and those who don’t.”

In the same case, NCAA president Mark Emmert said payments would “certainly impact the way other student-athletes perceive them.”

The suits seem to be actually suggesting that paying players would divide a locker room. How preposterous.

In the case of Oklahoma, Murray might be the best chance the Sooners have of returning to the College Football Playoff. That’s not a locker room poison, that’s hope for life after .

It has come to this: Murray’s baseball salary allowed by the NCAA is literally the NCAA’s argument for corruption.

“Google the NCAA’s definition of amateurism,” said Gerald Gurney, University of Oklahoma assistant professor and NCAA reformer. “Essentially it says athletes should not be paid because they need to concentrate on schoolwork. They can’t juggle two balls at the sameGreenwood. The Sun says United are not planning on rewarding Greenwood with a new deal after his first-team breakthrough.Greenwood, 17, made four appearances for United last term and started against Cardiff on the final day.Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitt time. That’s asinine and ridiculous.”

At first, it might seem the root of this discussion is NCAA rules allow an athlete to turn pro in one sport and retain amateur eligibility in another.

But the real argument is how much the public and fans can stomach any college athlete being paid before they’re not considered college (thus, amateur) athletes.

Apparently, quite a bit.

Cost of attendance provides players between $5,000 and $10,000 per year just for being … athletes.Bowl gifts — typically capped at $550 — are nothing more than rewards for playing football. Men’s and women’s Final Four participants have their own gift suites to enjoy. Sports Business Daily reported basketball players who win their regular-season conference, conference tournament and .All three military academies (, , ) routinely pay salaries to cadets in service to the country.Olympic stipends allowed by the NCAA range from the modest to the extravagant. swimmer for his home country of Singapore for winning Ole a new hero in Bruno Fernandes. The Portuguese, signed from Sporting Lisbon last month, scored his first goal for United in Sunday’s 3-0 win over Watford at Old Trafford. And Crouch believes Fernandes’ bravado is exactly what the Red Devils have beenympic gold.Schools are allowed to pay five-figure insurance premiums of their prospects. One anonymous coach told me last year a player at  legally over the course of his career.

Most of these are not benefits allowed to the normal student. Just don’t ask the NCAA what a normal student is.

No one is going to deny that Murray deserves every penny he can get from the A’s. It’s only because he plays a different sport that he is not considered corrupted by NCAA standards.

“It’s very confusing,” Kyle Parker said.

Parker might be the best and most recent comparison to Murray. The former quarterback played football after getting a $1.4 million bonus with the in 2010.

After six years spent mostly in the minors, he returned to Clemson in 2017 to complete his degree.

“It’s leaning more toward the athlete,” Parker said, “but it’s still completely lopsided how much money college athletes make and [how much schools] generate off of amateur [athletes].”

In a way, it’s not a matter of paying players, it’s about semantics. What one man calls improper compensation, another calls amateurism.

“I have no issue with Kyler Murray at all,” Gurney said. “This is a demonstration of the NCAA’s inconsistent and ridiculous definition of amateurism.”

Parker said he was offered endorsements as a baseball player but th the Azzurri.“My relationship with Naples is normal,” he told Otto Channel.“I spend a lot of time outside the city, and when I return in the evening the only thing I enjoy in Naples is a restaurant or pizzeria.“This city could be nicer with scouldn’t accept them because he was still playing college football.

The same standard would apply to Murray.

“Any kind of advertising that you would have cashed in on playing in a big league city, you have to decline,” Parker said.

More absurdity. As a football player, Murray cannot accept so much as a free burger from a booster. As a baseball player, he has enough money to buy his entire offensive line a steak dinner. I’m getting headaches just writing about it.

For 50 years, until 1956, the NCAA essentially banned players from getting anything in outside compensation.

Now? Some players are sending cash home because of the myriad ways they can get money.

Some of the progress is common sense. Some of it reflects increasing pressure from the courts. All of it is way overdue.

Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby perhaps provided the most insight. He told the reform-minded Knight Commission college athletes are neither pros nor amateurs.

“I think it’s a completely different genre of his own,” Bowlsby said. “It doesn’t exist anywhere else in the world …”

Maybe that’s the biggest problem. Kyler Murray isn’t the outlier. The system is.
