Auburn vs. Mississippi State: Live stream, watch online, TV channel, kickoff time, odds, pick, prediction

No. 7  is coming  off a big road win at Texas A&M and will be looking to keep the momsays Rangers and Roma have enquired about taking Phil Foden on loan. The City youngster has been the centre of attention in Glasgow and Rome ahead of the closing of the transfer window.Foden, one of the bright sparks of England’s otherwise disappointientum going Saturday night when the roll into town in a key SEC West battle. The Tigers defense was flat out nasty against the Aggies and only gave up just 2.7 yards per rushing attempt. That, coupled with the fast start from the offense, helped them build a big lead before alla defender Gabriel Paulista is on his radar.Gabriel is set to gain Spanish nationality in the near future and Enrique has revealed that the Valencia centre-back is among his options for La Roja’s defence.”I am aware of every player who could be calleowing a few late touchdowns to make it interesting on the scoreboard. The Bulldogs rebounded from the loss to Kansas State two weeks ago with a resounding win over Kentucky in Starkville, Mississippi, last weekend.

If Auburn is to keep its hopes of reaching the SEC and national title games alive, they will need to win tough conferences test like this down the stretch. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, could play spoiler in one of the deepest conferences in football once again.

What will happen Saturday night on The Plains? Let’s break down the game and make picks straight up and against the spread.

It’s safe to say that the Tigers’ defensive front is one of the best in the nation, and will keep them in every game they play. Because of that, and the rest of the rushing attack has been the centerpiece of an offense that is still building with true freshman taking the snaps. Nix is 13th in the SEC in passing with 161.3 yards per game, and coach Gus Malzahn has essentially ignored short and intermediate routes over the middle despite those typically being a big part of an RPO-based offense. The Bulldogs have given up 143.2 yards per game on the ground, which means that you’ll probably see more of the same attack from Malzahn.

Quarterback ‘ status is still in doubt heading into the matchup. What isn’t in doubt is that his backup Garrett Shrader was pretty solid in his first start last week when he completed 77.3% of his passes. Why was he so efficient? Because running back is an absolute monster. The junior has topped the 100-yard mark on the ground in all four games this season, ripped off 120 yards and three touchdowns last weekend and leads the nation with 20 rushing plays of 10 or more yards. The problem for the Bulldogs is that they’ve given up 4.5 yards per rushing attempt — 12th in the SEC.

Game prediction, picks

Auburn’s philosophy is simple — run the ball, play defense and pick spots for Nix to open things up just enough in the passing game to keep opposing teams honest. The same plan will work on Saturday night. Whitlow will wear down a Bulldogs defense thak-four has given his side more freedom. The Magpies blew West Bromwich Albion away by scoring three goals in the first-half of their FA Cup fifth-round tie on Tuesday. And Bruce thinks moving from a back-five has freed up his attacking players. He said:t lacks depth, allow Nix to work off play-action and lead the Tigers to an ugly, yet efficient win and cover. It might be sketchy deep into the second half, but the Tigers are just too much for these Bulldogs.

Louisiana Tech’s Jaylon Ferguson sets NCAA career sack record

defensive end set an NCAA record for most career sacks during his team’s win over in the Hawaii Bowl Saturday night.

Ferguson entered the game with 42.5 sacks for his career, 1.5 sacks shy of former star Terrelle Suggs, who finished his career with 44. Ferguson finished the night with 2.5 sacks to move to 45, and just ahead of Suggs.

Ferguson could have had 3.5 sacks in th should be competing for trophies. The Giallorosso haven’t won a title for 11 years.“It’s such a shame for a club like this not to have won anything in the last years,” Dzeko told the Athletic. “Hopefully this can change, because this club, first e game. His second sack of the game came during the second quarter of the game, budown deep-lying defences. The Red Devils have been criticised at times this season for their struggles to penetrate the low block. But Solskjaer has pointed to wins over Burnley and Newcastle United as a sign of United’s improved ‘creativity’.“I thint it was waived off due to a facemask penalty on Ferguson as he tried to bring the quarterback down. Fortunately, it wouldn’t matter in the long run, as Ferguson would pick up a half-sack in the third quarter to tie the record, and then another sack on Hawaii’s next possession to set the new standard.

Of course, while Ferguson now holds the official NCAA record, it’s important to note that the NCAA did not begin offian coach Antonio Conte has taken a swipe at Italian fans.Conte returned to Serie A this season and was struck by the difference in attitude.“Racism is a problem in Italy, but so is any kind of insult, and after three years away, I find Italy has recially tracking sacks as a statistic until the 2000 season. The unofficial NCAA sack record is held by Derrick Thomas and Tedy Bruschi. Both players were credited with 52 sacks by their schools during their playing careers.

Clemson vs. Georgia Tech: Prediction, pick, odds, line, TV channel, live stream, watch online

One way or another each year since 2005, the annual cross-division rivalry between No. 3  and  has been a major factor in the ACC championship race. The Tigers and Yellow Jackets have combined to appear in the ACC Championship Game nine times in that 12-year span, though it has been Clemson dominating the league — and this rivalry — over the last three seasons.

The Tigers have won three straight games againnst West Ham United was down to an increase in confidence. The Brazilian received the ball from Theo Walcott on the edge of the penalty box and went on a mazy run to score the opening goal in the 2-0 victory.Asked if he was intent on firing off a shotst the Jackets and six of the last eight regular-season meetings between the teams. Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables’ unit is not only loaded with talent, it seems to have Georgia Tech’s offense completely figured out, holding the Yellow Jackets to just 17 combined points in the last two meetings.

Avoid the upset. Clemson is playing the long game right now, favored (often heavily) against every opponent on its schedule and trying to establish a championship-level focus and the kind of habits that could be the difference in a Playoff game. That said, recent losses against (2017) and (2016) have proven that Clemson is not only far from unbeatable in ACC play but just a few plays away from having those playoff chances altered dramatically. If there’s a spot on the schedule where Clemson might be vulnerable, playing on the road against an all-too-familiar rival loSports says Bentaleb is on Tyneside having a medical with Newcastle, ahead of a loan move from Schalke, which is managed by former Huddersfield boss David Wagner.Bentaleb has had an agreement with Wagner to seek a move away from S04 since before Chrioks looks to be it — at least enough so to get Clemson’s full, undivided attention.

This is a very crucial part of the season for Georgia Tech to avoid making the 2018 campaign the third time in four years that the Yellow Jackets did not finish the season in a bowl game. Ever since going 11-3 in 2014 and beating in the Orange Bowl, Georgia Tech has been 18-21 and failed to finish with a winning record in ACC play. The setbacks this year have already started piling up: back-to-back close losses to USF and Pitt, injuries to star offensive players and now the potential of starting the year 1-3 with thrNew Juventus coach Maurizio Sarri has revealed he has plans for Federico Bernardeschi.Sarri admits he’s a big fan of the midfielder. He stated, “Everyone knows I like this lad, ever since Fiorentina-Napoli. “He is well-organised, has talent, but lacks a little bit of consistency from game to game.“I think this is the moment of his career where he needs to play consistently in one single role.”ee top-25 teams left on the schedule. Paul Johnson said this week it’s time to pull yourself up by your boot straps, so what kind of response will the Yellow Jackets have for the Tigers?

Game prediction, picks

Too many points here in a game where I expect Georgia Tech to play well with its back against the wall. Clemson knows it doesn’t need style points, it just needs wins, and it can ride the defense to another low-scoring victory.

Despite two transfers in a week, Clemson’s quarterback situation is just fine in 2018

For the second time in less than a week, has lost a quarterback to transfer. Fortunately for the Tigers, their depth chart at that position remains insanely good.

Clemson announ it has been revealed. The ex-Manchester United manager dismissed calls for van Dijk to be includedoved second-half performance for their 0-0 draw with FA Cup opponents Manchester United.Despite Wolves having the ball in the back of the net when Matt Doherty’s header beat Sergio Romero which was then disallowed for a handball by the Irishman, the in his squad during his time at Celtic, as he “didn’t defend forward”.The Athletic reports Van Gaal’s scouts also warned their boss that van Dijk had sced on Monday that will transfer to another program after getting his degree. Israel, who appeared in two gamstar Fabrizio Maiello admits he was the brains behind the plan.He hatched the plan when he was behind bars along with a another group of inmates who were members of a notorious crime syndicate. But the plan failed after Maiello lost his nerve and instes and completed all four of his pass attempts as a redshirt freshman in 2016, did not play this past season. In high school, he surpassed Tim Tebow’s state record for touchdown passes in a single season. At one point last offseason, Israel was in the competition to be the Tigers’ starting quarterback, but an illness over the summer derailed those hopes.

Israel is the second quarterback to transfer from Clemson in the past week. Last Friday, also he was transferring out.

But these aren’t hard times for Clemson’s quarterback room. Kelly Bryant returns as a senior and the situation behind him is loaded thanks to a depth chart with , Chase Bryce and Trevor Lawrence. Johnson and Brice were members of the 2017 class with the former earning a five-star label as one of the top quarterback recruits in the country. Johnson also saw playing time in seven games this past season. Lawrence was the No. 1 overall recruit for the 2018 signing class and enrolled early.

Barring injury, Bryant’s job is likely safe for next season; the real battle will begin in 2019 with (presumably) two former five-star recruits in the mix.

Interestingly, Clemson won’t be the only playoff-caliber program with an intriguing quarterback situation. and have incumbent starters in and . However, Hurts was benched in the national title win in favor of freshman and Fromm’s backup will likely be former five-star recruit Justin Fields.

WATCH: Bo Scarbrough’s touchdown run is even more terrifying at field level

running back evened the score in the Playoff semifinal at the Peach Bowl against by rumbling in for an 18-yard touchdown. It was an impressive run with plenty of broken tackles, but it looks even more terrifying at field level.

WATCH: Jimbo Fisher says Auburn won ‘Kick Six’ game vs. Bama with ‘illegal’ plays

Jimbo Fisher is a great offensive coach. We knew this long before he led to the national championship, but what many fans may not know is that he’s great at teaching the game as well. Fisher regularly contributes to the Nike Coach of the Year cte for Ernesto Valverde’s job at Barcelona.RAC1 says Barcelona have deal for Chelsea attacker Pedro. The Telegraph says the Spanish winger is out of contract at the end of the season and could be available for a cut-priced fee.Villa boss Dean Smith is hopeful of securing a deal when the transfer window reopens in Januturned their attentions towards Pochettino to replace the under-pressure Valverde. It was expected that their former player Xavi would take over at the Nou Camp, but the Al-Sadd managlinics and is more than happy to “talk ball” when reporters know how to ask the right questions.

Fisher offered an unsolicited lesson on modern college offenses to reporters this week, explaining the conflict created by the run-pass option (RPOs) and quarterback runs. The college rules allow a lineman to be three yards upfield at the time of a pass, so a lineman has at least a few yards to fake a run block (freezing linebackers and safeties) while the quarterback waits for his receiver to get behind the defense. “It’s why you’re seeing scoring so high right now across the country,” Fisher says.

“What they’re doing on offense right now is illegal. Should never be part of football, and I’m an offensive guy,” Fisher said. “When you can have a lineman go three yards doreparing a first offer for Real Madrid attacker James Rodriguez. After completing a two-season loan at Bayern Munich, James is now up for sale at Real – and a confirmed target for Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis.Le 10 Sport says De Laurentiis iwn the field and it’s a pass, there’s something wrong with that.”

Lineman can’t get that far upfield in the , so it’s obvious why RPOs aren’t as popular at the next level. Fisher points out that everyone thought the running quarterback would be the next craze, only to see the effects of extra hits take a toll on high-priced investments for franchises.

The entire presentation was great, then Fisher inadvertently made headlines for pointing out that those kind of option plays with lineman upfield “cost a national championship.”

“When we played for the national championship, they had a lineman seven yards down the field on the pass they threw that tied it up before the “Kick Six.” They would have never been there, should have been illegal,” Fisher said. “Last year when they played Ole Miss on TV? Had lineman six yards down the field.”

NCAA D-I board chair doesn’t want O’Bannon appealed to Supreme Court

DESTIN, Fla. — NCAA Division I board of directors chairman Harris Pastides said he is not inclined to have the NCAA try to get the US Supreme Court to hear the Ed O’Bannon case if the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals rules unfavorably against the association.

Pastides, president of the University of South Carolina, said that an NCAA committee is currently working on creating new NCAA bylaws allowing football and men’s basketball players to be paid if the O’Bannon injunction goes into effect. Depending on the outcome of the NCAA’s appeal, schools could begin offering players deferred payments for use of their names, images and likenesses (NILs) beginning Aug. 1. The payments would go into effect in the 2016-17 academic year.

Pastides said he thinks the NCAA made a good case in its appeal and described the O’Bannon decision as a “hybrid ruling” that at least would allow the NCAA to limit how much money could flow to athletes. The NCAA could cap the amount of money for NILs at no less than $5,000 per year.

“My hope would be that we’d get beyond this,” Pastides said in an interview with from the SEC spring meetings. “You ask me if I’d like to see it appealed to the Supreme Court. I’m one member of the board. I’m eager to see us turn the page on that and start working within whatever framework we have to start working in.”

Here are excerpts of the interview with Pastides, who in January was elected chair of the NCAA board of directors.

Aug. 1 is the date when schools would be allowed to start offering payments to players for use of their names, images and likenesses. Are bylaws being created now if needed?

There is a committee that is working on preparing for that eventuality if this rolls forward and we’ve got to implement it. We’ll be prepared. Let me say, $5,000 is not that different from the numbers we’re all declaring relative to cost of attendance. Some of us said $2,500, $3,000, $3,500, $4,000. But it’s not like (US District Judge Claudia Wilken) said $20,000. It’s not like she said $100,000. It’s not like big business can come in and pay a hundred grand to one, two, three or 10 or 20 high-profile basketball and football players and say that’s the new model. I think her decision, although noWatford and Rennes are still haggling over a price for Ismaila Sarr. The Rennes winger is eager to move to Vicarage Road, though a fee is still to be settled.Watford’s last offer of €30m, reports Le 10 Sport, has been turned down by the Ligue 1 outfit.Rennes are insisting €40m to sell Sarr. The two clubs will continue negotiating this weekend over a deal for the Senegal international.t exactly what we would have hoped, is somewhere in the middle.”

Wilken did include cost of attendance in the O’Bannon injunction in addition to the allowance of money for NILs. So is it your understanding that it would be $5,000 plus cost of attendance, or it would be a combination?

I thought it would be a combination. I really do. That’s why I think (the dollar amount is) not that far away. … I think her decision would be just a bump up to five grand. But there are details that would have to be figured out. In fairness to us, if it goes through unobstructed by appeal, there would be some clarification. The NCAA would immediately have questions back: What did you mean by that? How does that get adjudicated? Literally, if we wanted to implement that ruling, it’s not clear. Just like the questions you had for me.”

My understanding was the O’Bannon injunction was cost of attendance plus NILs, not a combination.

I’m not sure. (Note: Wilken’s opinion supports theWest Ham keeper Lukasz Fabianski has been ruled out for at least two months with a torn hip muscle. The 34 year old Polish stopper suffered the injury taking a goal-kick during West Ham’s 2-2 draw at Bournemouth on Saturday and was substituted in the 34th minute. conclusion that she’s saying NILs ands and cost of attendance are two separate numbers. Wilken wrote “the injunction will not preclude the NCAA from implementing rules capping the amount of compensation that macult for him to watch the UEFA Nations League. The Spurs midfielder was not involved at the World Cup or in the Finals of the Nations League, despite helping England reach the event this past summer. But Winks wants to put his head down and earn back hy be paid to student athletes while they are enrolled in school; however, the NCAA will not be permitted to set this cap below the cost of attendance, as the term is defined in its current bylaws. The injunction will also prohibit the NCAA from enforcing any rules to prevent its member schools and conferences from offering to deposit a limited share of licensing revenue in trust for their FBS football and Division I basketball recruits, payable when they leave school or their eligibility expires.”)

Is the Jeffrey Kessler case that seeks a free market for players the biggest lawsuit you’re worried about?

It’s a big one. We of course talk about it. I am hopeful there will be an agreement there of all parties. Of course, the devil’s in the details. I understand that the former players say that we were close to implementing something like full cost of attendance several years ago and there was an override. Now the courts are saying you need to do that, so the players want some of that money retroactively. I understand that point of view.

On the other hand, how far back do you go? Do you go to ancient times? That’s something we’re going to let the lawyers figure out. But we don’t want the players and former players to be against us. I know where money is involved it’s a contentious thing. But the NCAA can’t be seen as anti-player or anti-former player. We don’t want that.

Do you think there could be a way to create group licensing for athletes?

Maybe. I think when you think about a jersey, just to use that as an example, and when there’s a very popular player whose name is on the jersey and they’re flying like hotcakes but the university’s name is on the jersey too, I could see something where that player benefits later on. Maybe a group license is the way to do it.

We also at the NCAA care deeply about the players whose names aren’t on the jersey being bought. I’m one of those people who was strongly in favor of cost of attendance sharing more money with the players to help college become more affordable. … What I’m equally vehement in opposition is that we allow a small number of elite athletes to benefit egregiously because of their talent financially while they’re still college students. But if you were to ask me might there be some way where those students who are directly contributing to the financial gain of the university because they are so good, shouldn’t they benefit a little more? I think that’s something we can continue to work on.

Playing devil’s advocate, you’ve got regular students who are actors, musicians, writers and can get paid while being a student in college. When I was in college, I could work at the student newspaper and get paid and also get paid professionally as a freelancer.

But you did that on your own.

Right. So that’s another model that has been suggested. Couldn’t you say athletes could receive sponsorship money they’re able to obtain from the outside and universities wouldn’t be on the hook to directly pay for it?

Well, a track and field athlete arguably has that opportunity. But how does that happen for a football player or basketball player who has no value until they become a pro other than they’re part of the university team? If the benefits to accrue are moderate, I’m always going to want to talk about it. If the path forward is like remove all control, you know, then I’m not [in favor of it].

I know we have a student [at South Carolina] who used to be a Disney actor and made a lot. We understood it. How could she not have her big payday? But she took a leave of absence, she made money, she put the money in the bank. I don’t know how much. She didn’t have to tell me how much. The studios paid her money. She comes back to school at the right time. She has ample time to pay her tuition. That’s a good story.

It’s a little different in athletics when you’re playing a team sport. And by the way, I realize that young woman was different than other students. She came back, she was a little bit of a celebrity, just like athletes can be a celebrity. I’m one of those forces in the NCAA who wants to talk about these things. We’ll talk about them with Congress, we’ll talk about them with business interests. I just think the courts, plaintiffs, defendants, probably are not the best way to get the right thing done.

But change probably wouldn’t get done without pressure, right?

Well, it’s the American way. I think people would understand that we can’t just cave and roll over and say well, you’re applying pressure so here’s the treasury. … Then people say take the money away from the coaches’ salaries. But our hands are restricted there because of federal antitrust and you can’t restrict competitiveness.

To be fair, that’s what the players are saying. They’re saying they’ve been restricted and their value is capped at zero after a scholarship.

I know, but I would say 90 percent or more of NCAA members — even the 65 universities in the five autonomy conferences — are not going to find it easy to find the extra money because you can’t divert it from the coaches. The only thing you really can do is either in the best case defer projects that are of value to the university and the players themselves, or increase tuition or take state appropriations away in order to pay the athletes more. There’s not a huge treasury that allows us to do that. We’re fortunate with the [SEC] Network we have some new income. That’s where we’re going to get the money.

Some members of Congress want to create a presidential commission to examine issues in college sports. Do you think that is going to happen and what do you believe Congress’ role should be in college sports?

I don’t think it’s going to happen. I think there will be a constant din. There will probably be a minority of people wanting this anytime there is a flagrant problem [in college sports], because there will be these problems, I’m sure, every year. Congress’ role ought to be inquiring, to be interested, to be observant, but not to be managing or legislating because I think we’ve done very well all these years.”

Tulsa fires coach Bill Blankenship after 2-10 season

Tulsa made things official ofered a return to football in Italy.Emery was offered the job at Everton before Carlo Ancelotti’s appointment, but felt it came too soon – just days after being axed by the Gunners earlier this season. However, Corriere dello Sport says Emery is undern Monday morning, announcing that coach Bill Blankenship will not be back with the program in 2015.

“We are grateful fortart in Sunday’s 1-0 win over Newcastle United. The inclusions of Nelson and Willock meant it was the first time Arsenal had named two English teenagers in their starting XI for a Premier League game for the first time since February 1998.And Emery sa the service and commitment of coach Blankenship to our university, our student-athletes and our community, but we have decided that the program needs to go in a different d his breakthrough at Chelsea with a new deal. The 19-year-old right-back’s current contract runs until 2022 and he will be given improved terms to bring him closer into line with the club’s first-team stars.James has made 14 appearances for the Blues irection,” said Tulsa athletic director Derrick Gragg.

Gragg also said that a search committee would be formed immediately as the school looks for Blankenship’s replacement.

Blankenship spent four seasons at Tulsa, but the last two failed to live up to the promise of his first two years on campus. Blankenship took over the Tulsa program after Todd Graham left for the Pittsburgh job following the 2010 season, and he went 19-8 in his first two seasons at the school. The success faded quickly, though, as the Golden Hurricane were only 5-19 the last two seasons, including a 2-10 mark in 2014.

Change isn’t coming easy at Texas, but Strong has the track record to do it

Two games in, Texas coach Charlie Strong has suspended or dismissed 11 players.

You’ve heard the snark: He’s getting down to the 53-man roster limit.

Two games in, Strong has lost his starting quarterback, center and may be missing Saturday against UCLA. He has only eight offensive linemen available — with 10 career starts to their credit. A month ago two of them were playing defense.

Two games in, Texas’ coach remains in the process of shaping the Longhorns in his image. You know, the one that produced 37 victories in four years and a Sugar Bowl win at Louisville.

Two games in, a cynic could call the season a wash. Come back fresh next year. The 41-7 loss to BYU was the worst at home since 1997. There’s a symmetry there. That game 17 years ago was the infamous Rout 66 against UCLA (66-3) that ushered John Mackovic out the door.

Recall, again, who the Horns play this week?

But two games in, Strong also doesn’t need anyone telling him how to do his job. Except that’s part of the job at Texas.

That was a UT truth before Strong arrived, before his first season sputtered to a depressing 1-1 start.

Before Red McCombs returned my call this week.

The 86-year old former owner of the Spurs, Vikings and Nuggets still holds significant power at a place that traffics daily in it. There’s a statue of him inside the stadium. His name is on the business school. McCombs reportedly has donated more than $100 million to the school, has a reported net worth of about $1.5 billion.

Who is going to tell him no regarding … anything Texas? He’s the , then apologized. He’s the guy who was also at the season opener.

“Expectations have been lowered by the results of our first two games,” McCombs said. “I don’t think our expectations are going to get much lower than what they are now. I think our move is going to be up.”

McCombs spoke to a group of boosters Saturday and was asked what impressed him most about the Horns Saturday.

“The fact that three of the guys sweated enough to have to take a shower after the game,” he said. “The players and the coaches wouldn’t want to hear that. They knew that was a joke.”

We’re not saying this follows any logical, linear form. It is merely Week 3 of 2014 in Austin. It must be endured. Mack Brown was everybody’s friend until he didn’t win enough games. In the state, Texas A&M has assimilated nicely into the SEC. Baylor won the Big 12 (beating Texas to do it). Rival Oklahoma is coming off an Alabama win in the Sugar Bowl and is ranked in the top four.

Strong deserves the time and space to reshape the Horns, to toughen them up — to win. From this perspective, he has and he will.

Strong has a track record. Perhaps the biggest criticism of Texas football is its alleged country club atmosphere. Perhaps it is ridiculously early to be talking about any of this.

It’s also fair to the take the temperature of a program that has the largest budget in the country. McCombs is one [rich] man with one [significant] thermometer.

Hey, Strong was the guy who told us the Horns . Honesty has turned into accuracy.

McCombs said he didn’t crieir support of coach Marcelino.Marcelino survived intense sack talk in January to lead VCF to Champions League qualification and the Copa.Alemany said, “It’s a bet of the club, of everything (in reference to the continuity of Marcelino). I am very haticize Strong’s hiring — although he did say at the time Strong would make “.”  Instead it was what McCombs called the school’s “practice and process,” in replacing Brown that bothered him. McCombs says he was told by former Texas president Bill Powers at one point “no big hurry, we’ve got another couple of weeks.”

“[At the time] I was talking to a coach who I think is one of the top five coaches in the nation,” McCombs said. “I think I had him at the five-yard line …”

Whether that was Jon Gruden, a replacement McCer Roman Abramovich. The former Blues manager returns to Stamford Bridge this weekend to face his former club.On Abramovich, Ancelotti said: “I probably spoke three times with Abramovich after leaving Chelsea. “It was always a pleasant conversatioombs reportedly courted, is not known. He did say it was not Nick Saban.

“The next day they announced they’d hired Coach Strong. Obviously, something happened … It fell out like I was disappointed in Coach Strong. I was disappointed in the decision being made.”

McCombs has made peace with Strong, says he is a strong Samatta is pinching himself over his Carabao Cup final appearance against Manchester City.On Sunday he will play for his new club against Manchester City at Wembley. “This is huge,” the Tanzania striker told the Daily Mail. “It’s a final. At Wembl Still, is there that a temptation to write off a season to misfortune and transition?

“You can’t do that,” McCombs said. “You’ve got to improve every day. They’ve got kids to work with. They’ll be getting better. I’m sure that Coach Strong and his staff have been surprised with some of these kids because they thought they’d get more out of them.”

What about optimism?

“It’s always OK — honest to God — to be optimistic in Texas. We have the greatest high school football factory in the world …

“Coach Strong’s stronghold was his relationship with Florida high school coaches. Now he’s going to have to develop that background with Texas high school coaches. There’s no reason why he shouldn’t be able to do that …

“Will that take another couple of years? Probably so?”

College Football Rewind: Jameis Winston sits, Florida State survives

Welcome back to Rewind. This is your first look back at what happened each week and what it means moving forward. Every Saturday night, I will analyze the week’s games and the always colorful world of college football.

The look on Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher’s face bordered on confusion and annoyance.

Jameis Winston — you can’t spell Jameis without “me” or “I” — was suspended for the entire Clemson game due to vulgar comments he made in public. Yet there he was in pregame warmups dressed as if he would play. Winston was showing up his coach on national TV. Fisher sent Winston back to the locker room to take off his shoulder pads — par for the course in the never-ending circus surrounding the Heisman Trophy winner.

Without Winston, No. 1 Florida State survived for a 23-17 overtime victory. In this new world of the College Football Playoff, surviving is all the Seminoles needed to do without Winston. But it was high drama in the process and a credit to the Seminoles they won without Winston.

Sean Maguire demonstrated why he’s Winston’s backup, but did throw a 74-yard touchdown pass to Rashad Green to tie the score late in the fourth quarter. Clemson’s defensive line dominated much of the game. Florida State had only 13 rushing yards on 27 carries, but gained 25 yards on two plays in overtime for the win.

Deshaun Watson displayed his immense talent as Clemson’s new quarterback. Dabo Swinney had to make the move to bench Cole Stoudt and Watson didn’t disappoint. But the Tigers squandered chances for a huge road win.

Clemson missed field goals. Clemson snapped the ball over Watson’s head from the 1-yard line. Clemson lost a fumble with 2:14 left at the Florida State 26-yard line. Clemson got stuffed in overtime on a fourth-and-inches play out of a shotgun formation.

Clemsoning happened before the nation’s eyes again.

Meanwhile, Winston remained the storyline, especially because Florida State oddly allowed him on the sideline. I counted 54 television shots of Winston during the ABC broadcast of a game in which he didn’t play.

Why did Winston come out in full pads during warmups? “Because he loves his teammates,” Fisher told the media afterward.

This much is certain: Florida State survived and the College Football Playoff committee escaped having to determine what a Seminoles loss without Winston means.

What We Learned in Week 4

As if the SEC West needed any more depth, Mississippi State knocked off No. 8 LSU with a statement 34-29 victory. It was Mississippi State’s first win over LSU since 1999 and first win at Tiger Stadium since 1991. Dak Prescott threw for 268 yards and ran for 105 as the Buity. The Belgian midfielder made the move from Serie A outfit Sampdoria for around £18m in the summer having been a long-term target of City’s.He told Sporza: “I was open to a step higher.”I also knew that Leicester would be very good. I had seen thelldogs gained 570 yards, the most LSU has ever allowed under Les Miles. Mississippi State typically beats the teams it should and loses to the SEC elite. Dan Mullen entered Saturday with a 1-16 combined record against Alabama, Auburn, LSU and Texas A&M. Now Oct. 4 is shaping up to be a monumental day in the state of Mississippi: Alabama at Ole Miss and Texas A&M at Mississippi State.

Not even Blake Sims could have imagined throwing for 445 yards (second most in Alabama history) and four touchdowns in a 42-21 win over Florida. “I didn’t think I would be able to do that,” Sims said. Sims is the latest example of why it’s foolish to anoint a starter (Jake Coker) or toss aside a player (Sims) before we actually see him given a chance. Alabama had a 400-yard passer, 200-yard receiver and 100-yard rusher in the same game for the first time. That’s a credit to Lane Kiffin, who is thriving with the most offensive talent in Nick Saban’s tenure with the Crimson Tide. Alabama and Baylor are the only teams ranked in the top 10 in total offense and total defense through four weeks. Alabama tried its best in the first half to give the game away to Florida with turnovers. Saban wants Sims to communicate and manage the game better. Sims suffered a scare when he bruised his shoulder in the second half but later returned. Contrary to what the public would have thought a couple weeks ago, Alabama is counting on Sims staying healthy. “People have to respect him as a passer,” Saban said. “He has made too many plays and too many good throws for people to not respect him as a passer.”

The Sooners continue to impress somewhat quietly under the radar. With running back Keith Ford injured, 243-pound freshman running back Samaje Perine ran for 242 yards and four touchdowns in a 45-33 win at West Virginia. Perine averaged 7.1 yards a carry and ran over two defenders on one touchdown. The Sooners outscored West Virginia 21-3 after the game was tied at 24 at halftime until the Mountaineers scored a late touchdown. West Virginia star quarterback Clint Trickett threw for 376 yards, but the Sooners forced three turnovers by Trickett. The West Virginia trip may have been Oklahoma’s toughest road game left. The Sooners get Kansas State, Baylor and Oklahoma State all at home.

over ? In another sign of how wide-open the SEC East is and how much weaker it is compared to the SEC West, 31-27 by Indiana. The Hoosiers ran for 241 yards on a Missouri defense that was supposed to be a strength for the team. Indiana was coming off a loss last week to . The win won’t make up for all of the September disappointments for the Big Ten, but the conference needed a win like that. The Big Ten also had Iowa beat Pitt, Nebraska defeat Miami, and Maryland triump over Syracuse. Missouri now has a bitter taste in its mouth before playing and in its next two games.

The Hokies have gone from 2-0 darling to 2-2 enigma within two weeks. Virginia Tech followed a road win at State” data-canon=”Ohio Bobcats” data-type=”SPORTS_OBJECT_TEAM” id=”shortcode0″> on Sept. 6 by for the first time since 1995, falling to and . Hokies quarterback Michael Brewer, the Tech transfer, has eight interceptions in four games. Even more puzzling is the Hokies’ seasonlong problem with penalties (10 per game, including 12 in the loss to Georgia Tech). This can’t help the ACC in the College Football Playoff picture. The ACC’s signature win of the season has lost a lot of luster in a short amount of time.

How bad has it gotten for ? Not only did the Wolverines lose 26-10 at home, a kick returner from either trolled or paid tribute to Desmond Howard in the Big House. After Kaelin Clay returned a punt 66 yards for a touchdown, from 23 years ago. ’s Leonard Fournette struck a pose against Sam Houston State after his first career touchdown. That was bad taste for a rookie against weak competition. But Clay doing it the only time he will ever play in the Big House? I can dig that.

East Carolina 70, 41. One year after whipping the Tar Heels 55-31, . Even with wide receiver Cam Worthy out with a two-game suspension due to a “verbal disagreement” with a male student on campus, the Pirates’ offense didn’t miss a beat. It’s time to stop expressing surprise at East Carolina. This is a good tea Rodriguez insists their 0-0 draw with Arsenal was two points dropped. The Clarets ended a 10-game losing Premier League run against Arsenal and made it seven points from three games with a first home draw for 12 months to climb to 11th in the table.Bm and clearly the best one in North Carolina. East Carolina has won four straight games against the ACC.

rushed for 644 yards, the most in the Big Ten’s modern era, dating back to 1946. The only instance when a Big Ten team ran for more: (832 in 1905), Ohio State (718 in 1930) and Minnesota (663 in 1927). and five touchdowns on only 13 carries. The only blemish: Gordon lost his first fumble in 322 carries.

Arizona scored 19 points in the final 3:30 to stun Cal in a 49-43 victory. Anu Solomon (47 of 73, 520 yards) threw a 49-yard Hail Mary touchdown for the winner. The Wildcats scored 36 points, ran 31 plays and totaled 278 yards in the fourth quarter alone.

Here’s video of the Hail Mary:

My weekly look at the evolving trends, successes, failures and all-around moaning about up-tempo offenses.

Stop the presses: A Nick Saban team ran 87 plays for 645 yards against Florida. Credit Lane Kiffin for bringing a more consistent up-tempo style than Alabama has tinkered with briefly in the past. Credit Florida’s overwhelmed secondary for some major blown assignments. Alabama isn’t going or Texas A&M fast, but the pace seems to suit the Crimson Tide as long as Blake Sims can communicate the calls in a consistent manner. Still, the irony is rich that Saban — the coach who questioned whether faster tempo is what football should be for safety purposes — has turned to more tempo himself. Alabama is averaging 78 plays per game — the most in Saban’s eight seasons. Alabama averaged 65.9 plays in 2013 and was under 69 plays every year from 2008 to 2013. A Saban team is now averaging more plays than a Gus Malzahn Auburn team (73) or a Kevin Sumlin Texas A&M team (76). Go figure. The FBS leaders in plays per game through Week 4: Western Kentucky 92, West Virginia 88.5, Northern Illinois 86.8, Hawaii 86.3, Arizona 85, Texas State 85.

No. 12 UCLA and No. 15 meet in Tempe for an intriguing Thursday night game. A year ago, Arizona State held off UCLA 38-33 in Pasadena to win the Pac-12 South in late November. Each of the past three meetings have been decided by five points or fewer. This season, UCLA has looked vulnerable after a lot of preseason hype, and Arizona State has three easy wins but hasn’t played a quality team. This could be a game of backup quarterbacks. The Sun Devils will be without injured quarterback Taylor Kelly, and UCLA coach Jim Mora won’t say if his starter, Brett Hundley, will play after injuring his elbow against Texas.

It’s -Georgia and South Carolina-Missouri next week. In some years, you might say the winners of those games would be in good position to win the SEC East. This isn’t one of those years. Expect a wide-open SEC East race until the very end. South Carolina struggled on Saturday to put away Vanderbilt in an ugly 48he Israel international only joined Sevilla this past summer from RB Salzburg.Dabbur is seen at West Ham as an alternative to Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud.West Ham are in contact with Dabbur’s agent, Milos Malenovic, though aren’t alone with Bordea-34 win in which the Gamecocks allowed two kick returns for touchdowns. “It’s one of the worst (wins) I have ever had, no question,” Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier told reporters afterward in an epic press conference. More Spurrier: “The way we play is embarrassing. I told the guys it’s embarrassing the way we play. And I’m the head coach of these embarrassing group of guys. … We’ve got all the voters fooled thinking we’re pretty good. I guess because we beat Georgia. I don’t know what all can help us. I really don’t.”

The Brady Hoke and Will Muschamp watches are officially on. Michigan has no identity and Devin Gardner continues to struggle at quarterback. Making matters worse, cameras caught Hoke jawing with defensive coordinator Greg Mattison following a sideline-infraction penalty. Alabama’s victory over Florida demonstrated how far the Gators remain behind the SEC’s elite teams. Jeff Driskel, once the highest-rated quarterback recruit in the country, had a 23.3 quarterback rating while completing 9 of 28 passes for 93 yards with two interceptions. The next month or so will help determine if two of the most prominent coaching positions in America will soon be open.

“I barely know what’s going on with ISIS to tell you the truth. I’m oblivious.”

PHOTO: Wyoming and Utah State’s new rivalry trophy is a rifle

Rivalries are cool. Rivalry trophies make already-cool rivalries even cooler. And the cooler the trophy, the cooler the rivalry.

Meaning that between and is going to be about as cool as rivalries get. Here’s the series’ new traveling trophy, awarded for the first time Saturday, the “Bridger Rifle”:

The rivalry — and more importantly, the rifle — are named for legendary mountain man . From :

Each year’s game score will be notched into the maple stock.

Absolutely no offense to, say, (whose history is storied and awesome), but carving game scores into the stock of a 19th-century rifle is just a wee bit cooler than painting them onto a water container … or just about anything else. There’s a nice logo, too:

Another wrinkle in the series between the Aggies and Cowboys is that’s it’s far from new; it’s been played 63 times, the first time in 1903. But USU and Wyoming .

“Our historic rivalry, geographic proximity* and institutional commonalities make a rivalry trophy a no-brainer,” USU AD Scott Barnes. “It’s gratifying to see a rivalry being restored when in so many cases recently, the wave of conference realignment has forced several tith Arsenal. The two managers will face-off later today at Emirates stadium.“The honeymoon period doesn’t go on for ever – and it shouldn’t do,” said Lampard.“But I think the fans will have a feeling for Arteta and want him to do well as being oo fall.”

There’s even some raised stakes for the inaugural Battle, with Utah State needing a win to clinch the Mountain Division title and a spot in the inaugural MW Championship Game. But when a win also means the right to celebrate with the “Bridger Rifle,” what other motivation do you really need?

Virginia Tech AD did not want Thursday night home game in ’13

When the ACC released its 2013 football schedule on Monday, there was one notable absence from the collection of nationally televised Thursday night games. For the first time in more than a decade, Virginia Tech will not host a Thursday night game in Lane Stadium.

Many fans voiced their displeasure on Monday, aihave closed their respective investigations into the alleged racial abuse of Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger.Rudiger told Blues captain Cesar Azpilicueta he was subjected to racist chants during a 2-0 win over Spurs at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Dming most of their blame at the ACC league office. But Virginia Tech athletic director Jim Weaver told The Washington Post that .

“I know this sounds crazy, but I was just trying to say ‘thank you’ to our fans who over the last [19] years . . . helped make Virginia Tech a desirable candidate for Thursday nights year in and year out,” . “And, you know, because of the travel situation and kids getting to school on Friday and parents or aduanuary.Lampard has a £150million war-chest and is now free to strengthen his side after the club’s landmark legal victory with the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The manager wants to see his youngsters respond in the right way, if and when he bringslts getting back to work, some can make it happen and some can’t.

“A consideration for our fans once in a great many of years, I thought was very appropriate.”

According to The Post, Weaver explained that Hokies coach Frank Beamer was also “.”

Virginia Tech will play an away game on Thursday night in 2013, in Atlanta to face Coastal Division rival Georgia Tech.

Virginia Tech hosted a Thursday night game against Florida State in 2012 after kicking off the season on a Monday night against Georgia Tech. For fans who struggle with being able to attend games with weeknight kickoffs, 2012 was short two home Saturday games. Taking a year off from weeknight games, in Weaver’s mind, repays those lost Saturday games to season-ticket holders.

The logic of giving fans more football on Saturdays makes sense, but there is something odd about Lane Stadium not hosting a Thursday night game. Virginia Tech first hosted West Virginia on a Thursday night on Sept. 22, 1994. The Hokies’ move from the Big East to the ACC did not stop the streak of memorable weeknight games.

In the current streak of Thursday night games — which dates to the 2002 season — the own in their FA Cup fourth round replay. However, Klopp admitted it will probably be a different looking side for the trip to Chelsea in the fifth round of the competition. He said, “I was very pleased with the performance and the result especially. WeHokies posted a 8-3 record. Since that streak will come to an end in 2013, we will leave you with some fond memories of “Enter Sandman” at night in Lane Stadium.

Purdue LB Dwayne Beckford arrested, suspended from team

linebacker Dwayne Beckford was suspended indefinitely from the team following his arrest on Monday, according to coach Danny Hope. It wasn’t imer City defender Nicolas Otamendi has assured Valencia he wants to return. The Argentina international has offers from across Europe – and City management aren’t actively seeking to lose him.But the Manchester Evening News says Otamendi is determined mediately clear as of Monday night what prompted Beckford’s arrest but he has had numerous run-ins with the law previously.

From the Journal and Courier:

Tippecanoe County court records show that Beckford was arrested by the West Lafayette Police Department. Details of what led to his arrest were not immediately available Monday night, but Beckford has already been charged in Tippecanoe Superior Court 4 with two counts of possession of paraphernalia and one count of possession of a synthetic drug. One of the counts of possession of paraphernalia charges is a Class D felo1 season. The 31-year-old defender has been at St. James’ Park since 2018.Manager Steve Bruce said: “It’s really good news to get Fede tied up. He has had a great season and richly deserves this recognition.”He is a great professional. He trains and wny because Beckford has at least one other prior conviction for it, from August 2011 in Tippecanoe County.

As of midnight, Beckford was being held on three separate “no bond” warrants. That’s because the Tippecanoe County prosecutor’s office filed paperwork to revoke his probation for a still-open possession of marijuana case, also filed in Superior Court 4. Judge Gregory Donat granted the prosecutor’s request.

“It’s unfortunate that Dwayne allegedly violated some of the terms of his probationary status,” coach Danny Hope said of Beckford’s repeated brushes with the law. “Once we examine all the details that led to today’s development, we will make a decision on his long-term status with the team.”

Mr Hellas Verona and Cremonese defender Wladyslaw Zmuda has urged AC Milan to stick with Krzysztof Piatek. The Poland international is being linked with a move away after suffering a form slide this season. But Zmuda told TMW: “Last year he seemed to goonday’s incident was the fourth time Beckford has been arrested since June 2011. Other incidents include an OWI charge, as well as a misdemeanor failure to stop following a hit-and-run crash. When West Lafayette police followed up with an arrest warrant, officers allegedly smelled marijuana at his apartment.

Beckford alluded to his standing with the team earlier this month at Purdue’s media day. “I have to be on the straight and narrow,” Beckford said to . “[Hope’s] not going to have a choice. You have to take responsibility and don’t take nothing for granted. One day it can be here and the next day it can’t.”

If Beckford, who had 91 tackles — the second most on the Boilermakers — is ultimately dismissed from the team entirely, it would leave a huge hole in the middle of Hope’s defense. Beckford’s backup, Antwon Higgs, had just three tackles last season. The third-stringer is Sean Robinson, a converted quarterback. For more Big Ten coverage, follow Mike Singer and Dave Carey

Cincinnati: Schedule Breakdown

In 2010, Cincinnati nearly pulled off one of the biggest nonconference wins in school history, thanks to a furious fourth quarter rally against then-No. 8 Oklahoma.

A late fumble, though, by former WR D.J. Woods led to a touchdown by the Sooners with 4:31 left. Oklahoma escaped 31-29. The loss dropped the to 1-3 on the season after earlier nonconference losses to NC State and Fresno State. Coach Butch Jones’ team can’t afford a similar start to the 2012 season.

The Bearcats will likely face one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in FBS in Hokies junior Logan Thomas. Last season, Cincinnati held USF QB B.J. Daniels to just 3.6 yards per carry in a 37-34 win but allowed 409 through the air. The Bearcats also contained West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith on the ground (seven carries for minus-20 yards) in a 24-21 loss last November. Smith also threw for more than 370 yards.

Cincinnati’s rushing offense will be put to the test against the Hokies’ stifling defense. Virginia Tech will return eight starters from a defense that ranked seventh in the nation in fewest points allowed per game (17.6). The Bearcats are looking for a replacement for RB Isaiah Pead, the reigning Big East Offensive Player of the Year.

Besides Virginia Tech, the rest of the Bearcats’ nonconference schedule is relatively soft. Of the four remaining opponents: Delaware State (Sept. 15), Fordham (Oct. 13), Toledo (Oct. 20) and Miami (OH.) on Oct. 6, only the Redhawks ended 2011 ranked in the Top 50 in total defense.
