Glenn Murray shows Wolves value of a finisher as Brighton make it three wins in a row

Chris Hughton acknowledged Glenn Murray’s fearlessness after Brighton’s 35-year-old striker secured a third consecutive win in the top flight for his club for the first time since 1981.

Knocked out and, Murray displayed a prize-fighter’s powers of recovery to start this game and score his 100th goal for the Albion after an interchange with the full-back, Bruno, who is 38.

“Glenn was adamant he was fine and wanted to play,” Hughton said after Brighton drew level with Manchester United on 14 points. “For us it was always about – wouldolari feels the club needs to consider the futures of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.Solari admits the pair are now in the veteran status.”They are very intelligent football players and, alongside Casemiro, they built one of the best midfields in Real Ma there be a nervousness? Because we followed the protocol we knew medically he was fine. So then really it’s about the player – [whether] we feel there might be some reluctance, a bit of fear. But we never got that feeling off Glenn. My thoughts were always to play him because wjoined Wolves in a deal worth £1m, but will remain on loan at Rochdale until the end of the season. The 17-year-old England Under-18 international scored against Manchester United in the EFL Cup in September.Matheson has made 15 starts for the Leaguee were able to.”

This victory against a stylish but blunt Wolves side marked the first time in 37 years since Brighton have won three in a row at this level. And they have now earned 39 of their 54 Premier League points at the Amex Stadium.

Murray reached his century a week after he swallowed his tongue on the pitch at St James’ Park and ended up at the local infirmary. If his first-half performance was unconvincing, his work after the interval showed why he has become indispensable to Brighton’s new life at the top.

He also reminded Wolves what they lack: a finisher to round off their incisive passing, which was too good for Hughton’s team in the first-half. Raul Jimenez, with two, is the only Wolves player to score more than one in the league this term, but he was innocuous and removed after an hour.

Murray’s role as totem was further enhanced by his perseverance, which reflects Brighton’s talent for fighting back in games that seem to be going against them.

Wolves changed their league starting line-up for the first time this s want to see a summer transfer settled. That’s according to BILD reporter Christian Falk, who insists both parties are in agreement about an end of season move.Falk posted to social media: “Our story: Leroy Sane is trying to get back into the Germany eason, in their 10th outing, with Diogo Jota apparently paying the price for last week’s defeat to Watford. Adama Traore, who has impressed from the bench, was the beneficiary, for 60 minutes, at any rate. Frustrated by the lack of a goalscoring threat, Nuno Espirito Santo, the Wolves manager, made a double substitution after an hour, sending on Ivan Cavaleiro for Jimenez and Kota for Traore. But still Wolves failed to convert possession into goals. Santo said he was “disappointed because we conceded to Brighton’s only shot, disappointed because we were not focused for [Murray’s] goal.”

Hughton on the other could reflect on another notable advance. “The focus in the changing room is on three on the spin, which for a team like ours is very difficult to do,” he said. “In the last two weeks we’ve had to rely on determination in the team – on team spirit, and players defending very very well.

“In the second season in this division you’re always looking down as opposed to up. It’s all about picking up points and securing as big a gap as you can from that bottom three.”

Bills Today: A bigger role for Justin Hunter?

content_img

Here’s the Bills news of note for Nov. 29th

All he’s done since joining the Bills is catch touchdowns. Of his seven receptions for Buffalo this season, four of Justin Hunter’s catches have gone for scores including last Sunday’s game winner in the fourth quarter.

“I think so,” said Ryan of more playing time for Hunter. “All he does is catch touchdowns. I remember that quote. Just like we had T-D Mike (Gillislee), now we’ve got TD Hunter, touchdown Hunter. He gives us a huge red zone threat, but also I think he does warrant more playing time. With some ofity to sign Lloyd Kelly, who joined Bournemouth from Bristol City earlier this week. The Sun claims Liverpool have moved their sights towards Leeds United teenager Leif Davis. The 19-year-old made only four Championship appearances this season but has the injuries we have there’s no reason he shouldn’t be able to play more.”

Robert Woods is still dealing with by coach Quique Setien.Setien replaced Ernesto Valverde at the turn of the year.”Honestly, after seeing the last few Barcelona matches, I haven’t seen any improvement since they sacked Valverde and brought in Setien,” he admitted. ‘With the great pla knee injury suffered in Week 11 and Walt Powell exited Sunday’s game with an ankle injury. Percy Harvin is dealing with debilitating migraine headaches that kept him out of the Jaguars game. That leaves the team with four healthy receivers in Hunter, Marquise Goodwin, Brandon Tate and Sammy Watkins.

Through the first half of the season the Bills had a top five red zone defense. Through the first six games of the season Buffalo allowed just six touchdowns on 18 red zone possessions by their opponents, good for just a 33 percent success rate to rank first in the NFL.

In the last five games however, the success rate for opponents has skyrocketed to 81 percent (13-16), with the last three opponents a perfect eight for eight scoring touchdowns once theala remains high on Manchester United’s shopping list.Tuttosport says United are willing to reopen negotiations to sign Dybala from Juve.United failed to sign the Argentine in the summer window but remain on the hunt for a new forward after selling Ry reached Buffalo’s 20-yard line. The Bills now rank 19th in red zone defense.

So what gives?

“That’s an area in particular that we have to get better at,” said Ryan. “We’ve already studied where we’re failing in the red zone and I think we’re amongst the leaders in the league from the 20 all the way down to the five-yard line, but it’s when we get inside the five-yard line they’ve scored 12 times on 22 plays. So that’s a huge area of concern.”

Buffalo’s defensive staff is already devising ways to improve their performance in goal line situations, and it hasn’t all been short yardage runs. Two weeks ago at Cincinnati, Andy Dalton scored on a two-yard run outside the tackle box, but he also threw a one-yard fade to the corner for their other red zone score to go two-for-two against the Bills.

“There are some things to look at obviously,” said Ryan. “Everybody runs the same call down there we just have to get better playing down there. That’s an area where you can’t focus a whole lot, but that area right there is killing us. So we have to do some internal things down there so we can get better there.”

“I wish we knew, but that’s when you’ve got to be at your best to stop them, but unfortunately we have given up quite a few of those, two back to back this past game,” said Ryan. “You’ve just got to line up and play every play and find a way to get them off the field. That was the thing that was disappointing to me (Sunday).”

Ryan felt the defense was particularly hurt by the read option keepers and scramble runs by Jaguars QB Blake Bortles. He was Jacksonville’s leading rusher with 81 yards on eight carries to average better than 10 yards per rush. Bortles converted two third downs for the Jaguars with his legs.

“I thought we had some calls set up to give our coverage a chance and the quarterback makes some big runs on us to convert third downs,” said Ryan. “Those are killers. I’ve mentioned how that can be frustrating for the defense when you have them all covered up and then the quarterback makes a play. Now we know how other teams feel when they play us because Tyrod does the same thing. We’ve got to balance up the rushing lanes and not let these quarterbacks take off on us.”

Fortunately for the Bills, Oakland QB Derek Carr, doesn’t run with nearly the success that Bortles has this season. He’s averaged less than two yards per carry.

Rafa Benitez dismisses criticism of Newcastle tactics – ‘I will not waste time on that’

Spring returns to Spiller's step in big play performance

content_img

He’s been hampered for weeks, slowed by a high-ankle sprain, but Sunday, Bills teammates were glad to have the C.J. Spiller they’re used to seeing.

“I was just joking with him and just saying it’s good to have old C.J. back,” Jeff Tuel said.

For three games immediately after sustaining his high-ankle sprain in Week 4, Spiller struggled to cut and explode off his injured left ankle. Week seven at Miami he struggled managing just 11 yards on six attempts. Coach Marrone chose to hold him out of their Week eight game at New Orleans, a day when Buffalo ran for only 88 yards on 68 plays.

A week off apparently did wonders as Spiller delivered three of the four longest plays in the game Sunday. Sunday against the Chiefs also marked the first time since Week two that Spiller ran for over 100 yards.

C.J. Spiller:

Spiller’s power and explosion were evident, and Buffalo’ Oxlade-Chamberlain is getting stronger.Oxlade-Chahamberlain was withdrawn at half-time during the Super Cup and Klopp indicates the England international is still working his way up to top speed. “It was positive for Oxlade-Chamberlain,” Klopp sais ground game was the beneficiary hitting a season high Sunday with 241 yards. Spiller gained 9.7 yards per carry on 12 runs for 116 yards and added two receptions for 39 yards. He even outran Kansas City’s Jamaal Charles, who had 90 yards off 17 carries. Charles makes up nearly 40 percent of the Chief’s offense.

“He’s a tremendous player for us,” Fred Jackson said. “So any time you get a guy like that back, you want to take advantage of his skill set. He was able to make some big plays for us.”

Starting on the Bills very first scoring drive, Spiller’s presence hit the field in a pair of runs which gained one of three first downs, allowing Tuel breathing room to toss a deep touchdown to Marquise Goodwin.

Two possessions later, Spiller touched the ball four times on a five-minute-drive, most notably finding a hole opened by a trio of thundering blocks in the middle. Spiller slashed through the void and ran for 29 yards before being forced out of bounds. The drive was capped by a field goal.

“Offensive line and tight ends and wide receivers did a great job blocking,” Spiller said. “Just trying to make a couple plays, a couple guys miss, just try to give us a spark.”

West Ham United can achieve something special with the current team. The fullback has extended his deal with the Irons until 2023, which could take the No3 up to nine years in Claret and Blue. He said, “Going back to the last year we had at the Bole

Unfortunately six plays later with the Bills on the doorstep of Kansas City’s end zone, Tuel threw an interception, which Kansas City returned 100 yards for a touchdown.

“We went right down the field, C.J. (Spiller) did a nice job, made a great run and we get down there and we don’t punch it in on goal line,” head coach Doug Marrone said. “We get a penalty on the pass play first and then we don’t punch it in with a goal line formation.”

“That’s a huge momentum swing, for anybody,” Jackson said. “It was something we had to get over fairly quickly. That’s something you don’t want to deal with, being down there and not only getting no points, but also giving them seven points. It’s something we just cannot do in that situation.”

Buffalo would tie the score a short time later and again Spiller was the catalyst. He singlehandedly ran the offense into field goal range off a flare pass from Tuel, which he took up the left sideline for 27 yards. Jackson earned the drive another first down, but the offense stalled at Kansas City 12-yard-line. Buffalo again took a field goal, but they proved to be Buffalo’s final points in a 10-point loss.

While the Bills feature back was glad he could contribute in the fashion that teammates and fans have come to expect, rney jokes that he was at a local park when he got a call about his move being complete. The Scottish left back made a deadline day move to the Premier League giants from Celtic. When asked about how he spent the past 24 hours before the finalising of being saddled with the loss made it hard for Spiller to take pride in his efforts.

“Like I said all week, I feel good,” Spiller said. “I feel like the spring is coming back. It’s still not back but it’s definitely very close. (Sunday) was very encouraging for me. It was a great day to run the ball as well as we did against a good team. At the end of the day, we still lost and that’s all that matters.”

Arsene Wenger strives to defy critics by seeing the positives in Arsenal’s Champions League absence

content_img

data-js=”article-body” data-insert-mobile-adslot>

Having found themselves eight places and 21 points below Arsenal at the end of the 2015-2016 season, Chelsea ended the 2016-2017 campaign under Antonio Conte four places and 18 points better off than Sunday’s opponents. Arsenal’s FA Cup final victory that denied Conte’s team the domestic double might have mitigated against that reverse but it does beg the question of how Wenger is going to make up the ground with the gruelling added extra of Thursday night football.

When the two sides met in Beijing last month, Arsenal found themselves well-beaten and their performance against Sevilla in the second of two Emirates Cup games last Sunday . It is early days yet but already Wenger is having to deal with the questions over Alexis Sánchez’s future as well as those on his own new contract after yet another turbulent season in front of a divided support.

He did not take well a question about having to justify his own position as manager, an obligation he clearly does ned Victor Lindelof after their Carabao Cup defeat to Manchester City.United trailed their rivals 3-0 at half-time, in the first leg of the Cup semi-final before Marcus Rashford pulled a goal back for the hosts.”This is poor defending from Victor Lindot feel. “I am sorry I am still here. I can understand that you want to kill me but at the moment, I have survived,” he said

“Look, [last season] we won the FA Cup and pton.Pellegrini praised Michail Antonio and matchwinner Sebastien Haller, who combined dangerously together to threaten the Saints throughout as the Chilean switched to a 4-4-2 formation at St Mary’s.The manager said: “Both of them worked very well amade 75 points, and we are of course not happy with it but some teams did worse. When we qualified for the Champions League, people told me: ‘But you didn’t win a trophy.’ Now we won a trophy, and didn’t qualify for the Champions League, and it’s said to me: ‘Why are you not in the Champions League?’ That’s normal to live with but I want to focus on my job and do as well as I can and win absolutely every competition.”

It sounds like Wenger is lukewarm at best about the Europa League, a competition that the club won in 1970 in its very early guise as the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup,. As usual, his objections seem to spring from his opposition to the structure of the competition, which accepts certain eliminated teams from the Champions League into the New Year knockout stages, rather than the benefits it offers to a pragmatic manager.

Asked whether he would take it seriously as a competition, it would be right to say that Wenger hedged his bets. “I will always play a team that has a good chance to win the next game. In the Europa League if we can afford sometimes to rest some players we will do it. But we have to adapt to the level of the competition and see first what kind of group we play in.”

The notion that it might be considered a route into the Champions League was summarily dismissed. “You cannot go into the season and think that. I always was not in favour of that, because I think at some stage it can influence on the championship. If a team is in a position in April where they have more chance to win the Europa League they can let some games go in the championship, and not completely focus on that, on the regularity of the competition.”

“I was always against it [Champions League teams’ entry]. Because apart from Man United, who did win the Europa League, all the years before it was always a team who was kicked out of the Champions League. That’s why I was always against, when we voted in Geneva, I was always against it.”

It did not sound like a man who has his eye on a first European trophy at Arsenal, the one achievement he has not managed in more than 20 years, although, as Mourinho can attest, that may ion Mirandes. The Watford Observer says Aias scored for CD Mirandes last night in a 1-1 draw with Real Zaragoza. The 23-year-old has now scored eight goals in 23 appearances in all competitions this season, including six goals in six games in the Copa change if his team are slipping from contention in the league come spring.

Rafa Benitez remains untouchable at Newcastle as he insists ‘2nd place would be fine with me’

content_img

data-js=”article-body” data-insert-mobile-adslot>

However, there is also no disguising the fact, Benitez has a squad that is the envy of the division, with the highest wage bill seen outside the top flight. A failure to go up as champions will be just that, regardless of the relief that will pour out of St James’ Park as soon as promotion is assured.

“Second place would be fine with me,” said Benitez, when asked if the title was Brighton’s to lose, although midfielder Isaac Hayden perhaps gave a more honest appraisal of the situation.

“It always matters if you finish first or second doesn’t made eight Premier League appearances and played a crucial role out a January loan move for Vinicius Junior.Looking ahead to Los Blancos’ clash with Alaves at the Estadio de Mendizorrotza on Saturday, Zidane hinted that Vinicius may get his chance to play in the coming weeks.”Vinicius is not going to leave,” Zid in Liverpool’s victory over Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup but he is now being considered by LaLiga club Real Betis, according to Estadio Deportivo. Adrian is being considered as a signiit?” said the former Arsenal and Hull City player. “As much as you want to say it doesn’t matter or promotion is the main thing, and of course it is, everyone wants to get promoted, that’s the aim.

“But I think there will be a little bit of a sour taste if we weren’t to go on and win the title. But at the end of the day, promotion is the main objective and you don’t get promoted without winning the games.

“It doesn’t matter about Brighton or Huddersfield, as long as we perform and we get the points necessary in the last few games we are promoted anyway.”

Despite Newcastle’s slightly surprising vulnerability, particularly at home, Benitez has rarely stopped smiling since he became manager.

It is all part of the charm offensive and if it looks forced at times, there is no questioning the positive impact he has had since he arrived in March last year.

Even if they fail to return to the Premier League as champions, Benitez has healed wounds at a club that was tearing itself apart before he arrived 13 months ago. Promotion, in whatever form it is achieved, will prevent financial meltdown, as well justify his own extravagant salary and reputation.

Benitez has united Newcastle with it supporters again and has therefore been spared the sort of criticism that would have been fired at others in his position during the various setbacks this season. It is that calmness under pressure that makes him ideal and two wins and a draw from their remaining four games, will guarantee promotion, with Huddersfield eigndes. The Sun says Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has handed United a transfer boost by cooling his interest in Portuguese goal machine Fernandes.Guardiola is making a long-term successor to Fernandinho his No1 priority in the summer window. It meaht points behind with only 15 left to play for.

“After the performance against Leeds, you say to anyone who is a Newcastle fan, that the team will do well in the next games and get the points we need, they would say yes please,” said Benitez.

“I am not pleased because we could not get the three points, but I am happy with the performance and the way the players have reacted.

“We have had a defeat [sic] and made some mistakes but we should have won easily and the performance of the team was so good that we have to be positive.”

Mary Wilson helps impact girls with sports

content_img

Saturday, Mary Wilson and the Buffalo Bills celebrated the eighth annual Westerto Nicolas Pepe to edge ahead in the race for the Lille striker.Pepe will sign a five-year contract at Arsenal having been offered wages of £105,000 a week after at one stage it looked like he would be heading to Italy, says the Arsenal-Nicolas-Pepen New York Girls in Sports program. The platform, founded by Mary Wilson, wife of Buffalo Bills Owner Ralph Wilson Jr., began in 2006 with tr Inter beat Serie C side Gozzano 2-0 on Sunday. He struck four goals on his Inter debut last weekend, but the focus since then has been on his weight.Nonetheless, the striker went some way towards answering critics as he started up top with Lautaro Mhe goal of enriching young girl’s lives with sports.

“It’s become more than I ever expected,” said Wilson. “For many of the girls, it’s their first time attending, many of them could have come a total of eight times. I’m hoping that even a little bit makes an impact.”

The WNY Girls in Sports program, hosted in partnership with the United Way of Buffalo and Erie County and the Girl Scout Council of WNY invites 250 Buffalo Public School girls ages 9-12 from “Closing the Gap” schools to the Buffalo Bills Healthy Zone Fieldhouse for an afternoon of sports.

Girls rotate in stations around the Bills Healthy Zone Fieldhouse trying old sports and learning new ones, from soccer, golf, track, volleyball, and tennis, to basketball, agility exercises, Double Dutch and Zumba.

Wilson, who has always been active in sports began the program to teach adolescents the life lessons that sports offers. Mary learned the structure sports provides at an early age. At age 60, she was the top ranked tennis player in the country. Today, she loves to share her passion with the girls, helping them learn core qualities such as discipline, sportsmanship and working as a team.

“Sports impact your whole life,” Wilson told buffalobills.com. “Learning how to work together… there are a lot of times you’re going to lose in life and you need to be able to move forward from there. There’s no doubt that for me sports has given me more than I have given it, and this is my way to pay it back.”

The program coincides with the NFL and Buffalo Bills PLAY 60 initiative, encouraging kids to get out and play at least 60 minutes per day.

“Whether it’s running or going to the gym, sports makes a difference, and affects you in a positive way,” said Wilson.

And Western New York Girls in Sports wouldn’t be what it is without the volunteers. Tlkeeper Anders Lindegaard insists there’s no one individual to blame for the club’s slide since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.Lindegaard stayed with United under David Moyes before leaving during Louis van Gaal’s time in charge. He told the London Evhe program has gathered a vast following of community organizations eager to help out. This Saturday, over 80 volunteers from the University at Buffalo, Canisius College, Medaille College, Upstate NY Jr. Golf – First Tee of WNY, Niagara Frontier Jr. Olympic Volleyball Club, Buffalo Soccer Club, Girls on the Run, United Way, and members of the Buffalo Bills Strength and Conditioning Department attended the event to encourage the young girls.

The annual WNY Girls in Sports clinic takes place twice per year, once in the spring and once in the fall.

Arsenal’s latest setback exacerbated by midfield crisis ahead of daunting trip to Chelsea

content_img

data-js=”article- Elliot Watt has signed a new two-year contract with the option of a further 12 months. The youngster, who joined Wolves at the age of 16 following time at Blackburn Rovers and Preston North End, rose through the ranks at Molineux to make his first-tebody” data-insert-mobile-adslot>

Wenger caused further frustration after when he admitted that his players were not “mentally” up to the challenge of facing a team who have not won in the league since early December. There was an air of complacency around the Emirates.

There was an angry reaction from Petr Cech with the goalkeeper admitting that so bad wa a move to CSKA Moscow over racism fears. The Russian Premier League giants offered the Everton winger a contract worth £75,000-per-week, according to the Daily Mail. However, Bolasie rejected the deal over fears he would receive racial abuse in Russis Arsenal’s first-half performance that they deserved to lose and did not warrant any “luck” even though Lucas Pérez came close to salvaging a point, striking the crossbar.

It is not over yet, but there is an enveloping sense of familiar failings about Arsenal this season as they spurned another chance to put pressure on the leaders.

“I think we didn’t play well at all,” Cech said. “We were second best in the first half. We made so many bad passes, we lost every challenge, we were simply second best.

“I always say that at this level you cannot play 80 minutes, or 85. You have to play 90 minutes with full concentration and everybody on top of their game.

“In the second half we improved, we had a lot of chances. I thought we were brilliant second half, but obviously we only scored one goal.

“We had chances but the keeper made some very good saves, we hit the bar and we could say we were unlucky in that way. But for the first-half performance, we actually didn’t deserve a little bit of luck.”

Cech added: “This was a huge setback because this was the game we wanted to win and we wanted to put ourselves in a better position going into the weekend.”

There were questions as to why Wenger did not start with Theo Walcott, who scored a hat-trick in the FA Cup away to Southampton last Saturday, after recovering from a spell out injured, with the winger coming on as a half-time substitute. Ramsey limped off early with a damaged calf and the extent of yet another injury is still being assessed.

Wenger left Danny Welbeck, who also featured against Southampton on his return from 10 months out injured, out of his squad and justified the decision. “We still have to be cautious with him,” Wenger argued. “Physically he looks readyed the refereeing after their 2-2 draw with Burnley. The boss was unhappy with Burnley’s first, lamenting referee Lee Mason who awarded the Clarets a throw-in which lead to Jay Rodriguez’s header to make it 1-1.Smith was critical of the handling of hi to play. However we still have to manage the times we use him and the times we rest him for a while.”

Spiller's big day rings hollow in loss

content_img

With six games to handle the mantle of feature running back C.J. Spiller has already shown some flashes of the kinds of plays he can deliver with the ball in his hands. On Sunday he flashed early and late and put together the most productive day in his young career. The only problem was he did it in a loss that extended Buffalo’s lengthy losing streak.

“It was a good day, tough losing the game,” said Spiller. “Obviously we really wanted this one. I think we played hard. The first half we really cosays Liverpool are capable of going through the season undefeated.Henry was part of the Gunners team which achieved this feat for the 2003/04 campaign.“I think this team can go without defeats, and the question remains who will be the first to defeuldn’t get anything established on offense; weren’t executing, penalties. We just have to go back and, that’s something we can fix.  See what we did bad, correct it, and see what we did good and learn of it.”

Spiller could learn a lot by what he did after the Bills defense forced a fumble midway through the first quarter. In a scoreless game Buffalo’s offense stuck to the ground early. After ro Lampard was delighted with Mateo Kovacic’s performance for their FA Cup win at Hull City.Lampard is pleased the midfielder is justifying his decision to buy him outright from Real Madrid last summer. The manager reflected: “I think he can do both rollling up 15 yards on his first three carries on the Bills first two possessions, Spiller ripped off an 18-yard run on a 2nd-and-10 down to the Miami 24-yard line. That was followed by a run up the middle that he busted to the near sideline after breaking a tackle, gaining the corner and reaching the end zone for a 24-yard touchdown run.

“I started to make my move early, saw the receiver coming in and he had a good block on that cornerback out there, I think it was Brad Smith, I saw the safety try to fit inside. He obviously didn’t do a good job of wrapping up and I used my strength that people say that I have little of, and showed that I can break tackles.”

At the half Spiller had rolled up 64 yards on just eight carries and had three receptions for 15 yards. Head coach Chan Gailey said the plan all along was to make heavy use of Spiller in the passing game.

“We had a plan of certain packages that we were using C.J . and we were using Tashard (Choice) in,” said Gailey. “We knew we were going to use C.J. a lot in the passing game.”

Come the second half Buffalo’s offense sputtered with Spiller only seeing four more carries the rest of the game finishing with a career-high 91 rushing yards. He also had a career-best nine receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown, the second most by a Bills player this season.

Down 23-7 Spiller was responsible for 41 yards on Buffalo’s 80-yard scoring drive and the back capped the possession pulling in a three-yard touchdown reception from Ryan Fitzpatrick on a quick slant to make it a 10-point game. Spiller became the first Bills player since Fred Jackson in the 2010 season to post a rushing and receiving touchdown in the same game.

Spiller’s 167 total yards from scrimmage was also a personal best eclipsing his previous best of 102 yards against Tennessee. All the lofty statistics however, didn’t register with Spiller coming off a loss.

“I’d trade those stats in for a win,” he said. “I was just trying to make plays. I knew what I had to do coming into the game, I knew what I wanted to try and correct from last game. Obviously I wasn’t making enough people miss last game and that’s something I wanted to correct and I knew those guys have a great rush defense ser David Luiz has played down his training ground bust-up with Gonzalo Higuain before last night’s Europa League final triumph. In the last session before the game, Luiz was filmed clearly elbowing Higuain. After defeating Arsenal, Luiz admitted the clo I really took that to heart to go out and show that we can run the ball against anybody.”

However, Buffalo ran it just seven times in the second half of Sunday’s loss to Miami. Gailey indicated that not using Spiller as much in the run game come the final two quarters of the game was to keep him fresh.

“We’re trying not to wear the guy completely out,” said Gailey. “He’s not the biggest back in the world. I don’t think he can go out there and carry it 25 or 30 times. I don’t want to put him in that position to carry it 25 to 30 times. I think we’ve got to split the carries and let Tashard have some of those packages to take some of the hits off of C.J.”

Spiller didn’t have a problem with the approach knowing all told he had 20 total touches in the game.

“We were down two scores; we’re trying to get some momentum, trying to get it going,” Spiller said. “I don’t go into the second half saying ‘I want this many carries.’ Whatever we need to do to get us back into the game, that’s what we’ve got to go with. I thought we were running the ball very successful but when you get down two scores and you’re trying to get back into the game and get your crowd back into it, you’ve got to try and throw it around a little bit.”

In the four games in which Spiller has been the main ball carrier he’s undoubtedly progressed, but the second-year back is more focused on finishing the season out with a victory or two instead of assessing where his game is right now.

“It’s too early, after we play the Patriots I’ll see what I did, but I’m just trying to learn on the go,” he said. “When you think you’ve done well, that’s when you get complacent.  I’m just learning as we go and I’m getting more and more comfortable with the offensive line.  After the season I think I’ll have a better idea over these six games how I think I did.”

Dutch football has not produced enough good players in recent years, admits Danny Blind

content_img

data-js=”article-body” data-insert-mobile-adslot>

Tomorrow night at Wembley will be much about Johan Cruyff, whose face will loom over the crowd in the 14th minute – in honour of his No 14 shirt – and begin a round of applause for the great Dutchman who died, aged 68, on Thursday. To say that the current team are in the shadow of the great 1970s “Total Football” generation is putting it mildly – Dutch football is approaching the kind of ice-age that the English game was once living in fear of itself.

“It is currently very difficult because Holland was second at the 2010 world Cup and third in 2014 so people expect a lot from our team and it is very disappointing we did not qualify for the Euro 2016 tournamet off Real Madrid lightly last night.City earned an historic 2-1 win at the Bernabeu, which has put them in pole position to advance to the Champions League quarter-finals.“They dropped in the last 10 minutes, we detected that and if the game had lnt,” Blind said. “Especially because the third place in the group would have been good enough to get to France. It’s very disappointing … it’s going to be a tough summer.”

The fear from Holland is that against a resurgent England, they could be in for a scoreline like the one of 20 years ago. That defeat is the only one suffered by the Dutch in their last ten games against the English although they have never had to field such an inexperienced side as the one likely to play tomorrow night.

There are around ten injured players missing from the current squad before you consider that the likes of Robin Van Persie, Nigel De Jong and Rafael Van der Vaart have all been put out to pasture. Against England there will be no Arjen Robben or Wesley Sneijder. Neither will goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen play – he broke his nose last week against France. Daryl Janmaat of Newcastle is out, so too Stefan de Vrij of Lazio, Ajax’s Davy Klaassen, Davy Propper of PSV Eindhoven and Erik Pieters of Stoke City

Blind did select the former Aston Villa centre-back Everton. With the Blues languishing at the wrong end of the table, the Dutch sports director is bearing the brunt of criticism. And TMW says Brands could yet be replaced.Everton have made contact with Shakhtar Donetsk sports director José Boto about Ron Vlaar, 31, for the first time in a year but the AZ Alkmaar man is also injured. Sniejder’s injury means a promotion to captain for Blind’s son Daley, of Manchester United, and when father and son came into the room at Wembley it was hard to avoid an old joke about this being the blind leading the blind.

Danny praised the change in English football as “less predictable, more modern, and in keeping with a European style.” He added: “England used to have lots of foreign players but it looks like they now have homegrown players in their league so they are building a good national team. That’s a contrast to us. We are rebuilding our national team with extremely young players.”

The Blind family can be absolved of any blame in having produced two international footballers themselves but elsewhere serious questions are being asked of Holland’s academy footballers. The worry is whether the likes of Jetro Willems, 21; Riechedly Bazoer, 19 and Memphis Depay, 22, will be good enough to get the team to Russia for the 2018 World Cup finals. How has it come to this, in a country that was once the byword for good practice in development?

“It’s always difficult to find one special reason for what has happened,” Danny said. “There were periods in the 1980s when we did not qualify [1982 and 1986 World Cup finals]. That’s football. We had galy Giuseppe Conte admits they may call for the suspension of all Serie A matches next weekend.Coronavirus concerns led to a raft of games being scrapped this past weekend. There were four Serie A matches postponed on Sunday, Inter-Sampdoria, Atalantareat players with Robben, Van Persie, [Klaas-Jan] Huntelaar, De Jong, Sneijder. The players aged 25-28, they are not around. We have to deal with that. The only thing we can do is bring in young players for games like this one.”

The Opta Stats still say that the Dutch are producing more homegrown players for the Eredivisie than any other top league in Europe. Of the players who started games in Holland’s top-flight in the last round of league matches, 64.6 per cent were Dutch. That compares with 27.7 per cent English in the corresponding Premier League games. The next highest after Holland was France with 58.2 per cent homegrown players in their league. The question, clearly, is about the quality of the league itself.

As for the Cruyff memories, they are strong for Danny who was signed by the great man when he was manager of Ajax in 1986. Danny went on to play 13 years at the club, winning five league titles and all three of the major European trophies. “Maybe I was a good player but not a special one and that move gave me the possibility to develop in a better team,” Danny said. “It changed my football life totally … it changed my whole life.”

Alongside him, Daley said that his generation knew Cruyff through the footage they watched on the television screen. “It’s clear he was one of the greatest footballers from Holland and the world … every young player knows who Johan Cruyff is and what he stands for. That’s the most important thing and everyone has special memories of him. He’s still a legend, even for my generation.”

Before the Holland team of Cruyff reached the 1974 World Cup finals they country had missed the previous six final tournaments, failing to qualify for 1958, 1962, 1966 and 1970 and not even entering a team in 1950 and 1954. Once again there must be a transformation in Dutch football although this time they have the Cruyff template with which to do it.

Louisiana Tech’s Jaylon Ferguson sets NCAA career sack record

defensive end set an NCAA record for most career sacks during his team’s win over in the Hawaii Bowl Saturday night.

Ferguson entered the game with 42.5 sacks for his career, 1.5 sacks shy of former star Terrelle Suggs, who finished his career with 44. Ferguson finished the night with 2.5 sacks to move to 45, and just ahead of Suggs.

Ferguson could have had 3.5 sacks in th should be competing for trophies. The Giallorosso haven’t won a title for 11 years.“It’s such a shame for a club like this not to have won anything in the last years,” Dzeko told the Athletic. “Hopefully this can change, because this club, first e game. Fortunately, it wouldn’t matter in the long run, as Ferguson would pick up a half-sack in the third quarter to tie the record, and then another sack on Hawaii’s next possession to set the new standard.

Of course, while Ferguson now holds the official NCAA record, it’s important to note that the NCAA did not begin offian coach Antonio Conte has taken a swipe at Italian fans.Conte returned to Serie A this season and was struck by the difference in attitude.“Racism is a problem in Italy, but so is any kind of insult, and after three years away, I find Italy has recially tracking sacks as a statistic until the 2000 season.
