4 things to watch in the AFC wild card race and Bills-Dolphins this weekend

content_img

It all comes down to the final weekend for the Bills. They’ve got a bona fide shot to end their 17-season playoff drought with their first meaningful final regular season game in 13 years.

Here are some things to keep an eye on this weekend as the Bills head south to play the Dolphins:

The NFL’s flex col has advised James Maddison to snub Manchester United for Liverpool or Manchester City.Nicol believes the Leicester City star could stagnate his career at Old Trafford, in a similar vein to Paul Pogba. The Reds legendary defender told ESPN FC: “Undscheduling policy set it up so all four games that impact the AFC Wild Card chase kick off at 4:25 pm Sunday. So, Bills fans will be busy tracking all four games at once. If they all go Buffalo’s way (all of them don’t have to) here are some reasons why. Remember Buffalo needs to win and a Baltimore loss or a Tennessee loss and a Los Angeles Chargers loss.

They just did two weeks ago in Orchard Park. The Dolphins have already been eliminated from playoff contention. Tyrod Taylor has had his best games against Miami. Cincinnati may want to “win it for Marvin” if indeed it is Marvin Lewis’ last game as head coach. In his last three games in Baltimore, Andy Dalton has averaged 322 yards passing per game, with 5 touchdowns and 1 interception. WR A.J. Green has played four games in his career at Baltimore and has a total of 579 receiving yards with 4 touchdowns.

Jacksonville has the third ranked defense in the NFL. The Jaguars are looking for revenge after losing to Tennessee earlier this season. Jacksonville QB Blake Bortles owns the Titans – he has thrown 9 TDs and 1 INT in his last three games at Tennessee, and averaged 332 yards per game.

The Raiders have won 4 of their last 5 against the Chargers. Raiders Coach Jack Del Rio is 6-3 lifetime against the Chargers. “Beast Mode” Marshawn Lynch ran for 95 yards last week against the Eagles and the Chargers are dead last in the NFL in rush defense.

**

You hear the cliché “coming up big” a lot in the hockey world. With the magnitude of the game in Miami Sunday, there are a couple of Bills who can be serious difference makers in the season finale:

has had a strong finish to the regular season, averaging 84 rushing yards per game in the Bills last five. He’s got three touchdowns in those five games, two of them against Miami a couple of weeks ago. McCoy has a knack for making Dolphin defenders (and others) miss in space and he seems to have a personal grudge with Miami LB Kiko Alonso who he was traded for three years ago.

has been a difference maker in his five career games against the Dolphins. He’s won three of those five, and he’s completed 65-percent of his passes in those matchups. Taylor has 9 TD passes and 0 INTs against the Dolphins over the years, and he’s run for two touchdowns also.

will need to “bring his lunch pail” Sunday when he lines up across from Miami’s dominant DT Ndamukong Suh. It should be a familiar feeling—he just went to battle two weeks ago in Buffalo and Ducasse held his own. Offensive line coach Juan Castillo was singing Ducasse’s praises after the Miami win but it won’t be any easier this weekend. Suh can take over a game with his sheer strength and unnatural quickness. It won’t be entirely on Ducasse’s shoulders, but he’ll play a big role in how much room Shady has to run and how much time Taylor has to throw.

The Bills will finish ahead of Miami and the Jets in the AFC Eden Hazard. The Mirror says Hazard is on his way to Real Madrid after the Spanish giants agreed an initial £88million deal with Chelsea .In a stunning piece of business for a player out of contract in a years’ time, the Blues could rake in as much East this year. They’ve locked up second place in the division for the second time in four years. They’re this year’s first runner-up in the division the Patriots seemingly own.

But Buffalo has a chance to finish the division with a 3-3 record with a win on Sunday. And they get their final crack at beating a division rival in the second match-up of the year. They lost previous rematches this year to the Jets and the Patriots.

Right before kickoff Sunday, look at the field at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium. It could look a little worn out.

At 8 pm Saturday, the Miami Hurricanes play Wisconsin in the Orange Bowl at Hard Rock. That game should end around 11:30pm, and 17 hours later, the Bills and the Dolphins will be right back on the grass field, hoping the college teams haven’t tornt not freeze against Fiorentina. The Grifone go head-to-head with the Viola, who could also still be relegated, but need to get a better result than Empoli manage away to Inter Milan to stay up. Prandelli said, “It’s marvellous to see and feeling th it up too much.

The Dolphins have recently installed Platinum TE natural grass on the field at home, but they’ve had some issues with it in the past.

Dolphins radio color commentator Joe Rose, a former Miami tight end, says if it doesn’t rain Saturday night the field should be OK. Should be.

“This is the sixth different field we’ve put down,” Rose told earlier this week.

“We’re fine as long as we don’t get any rain the night before, when the big guys from Wisconsin and the big guys from the Miami Hurricanes are out there. Quick turnaround–we’ve had some of those games when it’s been rough.”

The weather forecast calls for clear skies with only a 10-percent chance of rain Saturday night and Sunday in Miami. And that’s good, according to Rose.

“It has been a struggle for the Dolphins trying to get the right turf that can handle back to back games when it’s raining,” he says.

Bills Today: Bills offense still working on timing

content_img

Here’s the Bills news of note for Aug. 20th.

An offense uses training camp for one main purpose – to get in sync. In offensive coordinator Rick Dennison’s offense, most routes are based upon timing. This means that Tyrod Taylor and his rec have reportedly made an approach for Lille striker Leão.The Toffees are keen on teammate Nicolas Pepe, but face being priced out of a deal.Leao would be a cheaper optioHenderson says they must do better, despite victory over Arsenal. The Reds defeated Arsenal 3-1 on Saturday.”We knew if we did the right things, played to our strengths, defended really well and were clinical in front of goal, then we’d hurt them,” Hen and reports in France suggest Everton have approached Lille over a £37m deal.eivers will need as many reps as possible to ensure they’re on the same page. Rookie Zay Jones said this has been a slow process.

“It’s different when it’s routes against air and everything is laid out for you,” said Jones. “When you get press coverage, sometimes it throws timing off, and sometimes it’s obviously a different look. But, that’s what the preseasons is for. You just have to keep playing and keep building, and that stuff is going to come.”

For a rookie like Jones, and newcomers like Andre Holmes and Corey Brown, establishing timing in a new offense is a process. Not only do they have to become comfortable with their quarterback, but they have to understand their route, and the offensive scheme.2-1 midweek at Camp Nou and the same result this evening in the Derby d’Italia at San Siro.“It has been a mixed week, because we played not badly in Barcelona and here tonight too. We kept the ball and created chances, but were unable to score the It can take countless reps before a quarterback instinctively knows where his receiver will be.

Coach Sean McDermott said that in the second preseason game some of the protection issues could be attributed to the offense being out of sync.

“There are a lot of factors that really came into play in terms of the pressure on our quarterbacks [against the Eagles],” said McDermott. “Technique is obviously one thing, beating the man in front of you and the timing of the offense has to work hand in hand with the protection and route development and the quarterback getting the ball out on time.”

Building timing will only develop as Taylor becomes more familiar with his new targets. As the offense becomes more confident in the scheme, their play will start to find a rhythm.

“I’ve gone back and I was going through charting every penalty and trying to put them in different categories as you try to solve problems,” said McDermott. “You want to be able to say it’s all one area and that’s not the case. There’s some discipline in there. There’s concentration. There’s playing aggressive without hesitation so we stay in good position and we’re not in chase mode. So, there are different buckets that are factoring into the penalties, all of which are unacceptable.”

The Bills ended the second preseason game with 15 penalties for 131 yards. As McDermott stated, these penalties occurred during all parts of the game. Although some of the calls could certainly be considered questionable, the Bills still committed far too many penalties. Some notable calls include a leveraging penalty on Eddie Yarbrough on a field goal, which extended an Eagles drive. Another poor penalty was a pass interference call against Greg Mabin in the end zone, which gave the Eagles the ball at the one yard line.

Jerel Worthy lamented the leveraging call, and said that McDermott said they just can’t have those mental mistkes.

“When you’re running out on the field and you get penalties for being combative and you’re going after the ball, he doesn’t really have a problem with those,” said Worthy. “The dumb penalties, the pre-snap penalties, the false starts and the offsides that we have on defense, those are the ones that can hurt our team and can lead to points.”

Nine-year veteran, and longtime Buffalo Bill, Eric Wood said he’s never seen this many penalties in the preseason.

“It’s something that needs to be fixed,” said Wood. “I don’t know if I’ve ever seen it to this extent.”

McDermott said that he would be bringing in officials to work with the team during practice. Wood said working on penalties in practice could help.

“The game of football is a game of split-second decisions,” said Wood. “You have to just train yourself in practice to just work on it. We just can’t have the pre-snap and post-whistle penalties.”

With officials at practice, and greater scrutiny on penalties, the Bills will certainly make a concerted effort to improve their discipline as they prepare for the Ravens.

Kyle Williams was ranked as the third best defensive tackle in the NFL by ProFootball Focus. Williams is in elite company behind Aaron Donald, and Kawann Short.

Although a weakness last season, the Bills have showed encouraging improvement in their run defense so far in the preseason. Against both the Vikings and Eagles, the Bills were stout against the run. The Bills gave up only 66 rushing yards in the second preseason game. A big part of the Bills run stopping ability is Williams. His capacity to knife into the backfield, and disrupt plays is unmatched by many.

What makes Williams one of the best overall defensive tackles in the NFL is his ability to do it all. Not only can he stop the run, but he can also rush the passer. Williams had five sacks last season. His most productive year was in 2013 when he had 10.5 sacks – a massive number for a defensive tackle.

As the Bills defense looks for a resurgence in 2017, Williams will be one of the most important players in guiding the unit.

Why did Alexis Sanchez ‘miss’ drugs test, can Arsenal be punished and how serious is the case?

He said he had simply forgot about the test.

How serious is the Sanchez case?

On the face of it, any missed test looks to have been the result of an embarrassing cock-up by Arsenal. Sources say neither they nor Sanchez have any previous strikes against their names. But both player and club will now have to be ultra-careful to avoid a second strike this year, which would put them just one slip-up from a posm.Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos is on the verge of signing a season-long loan with the Gunners, who beat out competition from Tottenham for the 23-year-old’s signature.Emery was asked about his feelings towards using a player for just one seassible sanction.

The BT game at 5.30pm on Dec 23 is Burnley v Tottenham ed a new one-year deal with Chelsea.During his time as a Chelsea player, Giroud has become a World Cup winner with France and has continued to perform well on the European stage at club level, scoring 10 key part of Rafael Benitez’s Reds side that won the Champions League, the goalkeeper believes history is repeating itself.”It’s similar,” Reina tells Liverpoolfc.com. “It’s good for football itself. That’s where Liverpool belongs and hopefully it wi times in the Europa League this season while hHotspur.

The Arsenal Supporters’ Trust had been lobbying on behalf of fans over the Christmas Eve plans, with a survey showing that 99 per cent did not want the game played at 4pm on that day and almost half woulith a La Masia move.Sport says Kluivert remains the favourite to become the new Director of La Masia at FC Barcelona. The Dutch legend rumoured to be finalising the minor details of his contract and the club hopes to make an official announcement on d not attend.

As part of the Premier League’s £5.135 billion broadcast deal, Sky owns the rights to three matches each weekend; usually two on a Sunday and one on a Saturday. Christmas Eve fell previously on a Sunday in 2006 and 2000 but Sky had exclusive domestic rights and so could happily move their televised fixtures to the Saturday.

Jose Mourinho confirms Europa League now Manchester United’s main priority

content_img

data-js=”article-body” data-insert-mobile-adslot>

“I don’t want our club to be just happy fighting for top four and Champions League. I want us fighting for trophies.

“We don’t hide that we are still fighting for our situation in the Premier League but the Europa League becomes a fundamental competition for us. The Premier League was not possible because we drew too many matches.”

This was only United’s second league win since the end of February and means they are four points behind Manchester City wOf the other 17 players in the Liverpool squad for Aurelio’s final appearance, against Fulham in May 2012, only Henderson is still with the club.“He has responded to the expectation of everyone at the club,” said Aurelio of his former teammate to lith one game in hand over Pep Guardiola’s side. It makes sense for Mourinho to focus minds and energy on Europe and he made a point of praity midfielder Jack Harrison. The Mirror says Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa wants to re-sign Harrison on loan from City.Harrison impressed Bielsa on loan last season and scored four goals and made three assists in the Championship as Leeds lost in the playsing the fringe players who made a positive impact in the North East.

“People who needed to feel a positive performance, they did it,” he explained. “[Matteo] Darmian, Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford, it was important for them.

“Luke Shaw played well. The opposition were not creating big problems but he was solid, was confident with the ball and went forward with danger and was reading the game well to go back when Mkhitaryan was inside. He played really well, a good hour for him.”

As for Sunderland, it is a case of when they are relegated rather than if and even manager David Moyes did not try to hide behind Larsson’s sending off.

“I was disappointed we’ve not taken anything, but there were a couple of things t player of the Belgian national team in 2019. This is the third year in a row that the Real Madrid striker has achieved this recognition, which is awarded by the fans through a vote on the Belgian Federation’s website. In 2019, Hazard played eight mdidn’t go for us,” said Moyes “I’m not saying that would have made the big difference, because Manchester United had good control, but we were in the game until the sending off.

“We were in the game and it was key that we remained in the game. I think it changed that. I don’t want in any way to blame referees because our position is where we are, we’re bottom of the league, I want to make that clear. It’s nothing to do with referees, but I didn’t think it was a good decision.

“But we will only accept relegation when it becomes mathematically impossible for us to stay up. We’re not there yet and we fight on.”

Man City 2 Arsenal 2: Alexis Sanchez on hand to dent City’s Champions League hopes

content_img

data-js=”article-body” data-insert-mobile-arophy.Sarri was pleased with their 1-1 draw at Europa League semifinal at Eintracht Frankfurt in last night’s first-leg.He said: “I want to reach the final against any team, Arsenal or Valencia. It’s exactly the same for me, who we play. I don’t wantdslot>

Boos rang out on Sunday. This is not what Manuel Pellegrini, . This charming man might lose out to Louis van Gaal, who appears to lead a charmed life at United even if his future is under severe doubt. Once again, things fell his way.

Pellegrini joked that he had not arrived at City in a Lamborghini – acknowledging the fans’ song about him – but he will have to leave under cover of the night if the “disaster” (his word) of fans before defeat at Stamford Bridge last night. The former Blues captain was given a hero’s welcome on his reunion with a club he made 717 appearances for and won five Premier League titles with. The Villa assistant coach posted on Instagram on Thurfailing to qualify for the Champions League in the season that they made the semi-finals is confirmed.

Pellegrini and the City players returned to the pitch 15 minutes after the final whistle for a lap of appreciation and stood in the centre circle before a stadium that was near empty, maybe a fifth full at best. It was an uncomfortable moment. Pellegrini looked like he wanted the earth to swallow him up as a video of his time at the club was played on the big screens. He had been given the option of skipping it but chose to go ahead and probably rightly so.

Pellegrini also spoke of three “unforgettable” years but if City are leapfrogged by United, he will have failed despite winning the Premier League in his first campaign and gaining two League Cups. Clubs of City’s resources and ambition cannot accept not being in the Champions League.

“We deserve to be in the Champions League next year,” Pellegrini said afterwards. “We have (been) 37 (league) games in the spot of Champions League and we don’t want to lose that spot. I trust we are going to have our achievement on Sunday.”

City have, indeed, been in the top four all season but can miss out and cannot do a thing to stop that happening. There is a big if, of course. If United triumph away to West Ham United on Tuesday – in what will be an emotional night for the home side in their final match after 112 years at Upton Park – and beat Bournemouth at Old Trafford they will finish ahead of City. Even a draw and a win might do if City fail to beat Swansea City away.

“Things are now out of our hands but we will find out on Tuesday,” Pellegrini said. “We must keep our heads clean and chins up and try to win our last game. In my time here we have improved a lot in the Champions League. Also, for me, it’s been about our style of play. There have been a lot of positive things but we must qualify again for the Champions League.”

One win against the other clubs in the top eight; eighth in the Premier League form table since the Guardiola announcement was made at the beginning of February and the nagging feeling that City are never quite the sum of their parts would argue otherwise and against Pellegrini. In a sense this game summed up his reign, with City dominant at times, swarming over Arsenal but unable to kill them off.

The visitors also had to which throws his involvement in Euro 2016 into doubt. Jack Wilshere came on and was given more minutes to prove his fitness for England’s squad, but by then goals had been traded in a blistering opening 10 minutes.

Arsène  Wenger had declared that attack was the best form of defence for both sides – partly an admission that they are both shaky at the back – and so it proved.

City struck when Jesus Navas chipped the ball into the penalty area, Fernandinho headed it back into Sergio Agüero’s path and, with Mohamed Elneny uncertain, the striker drove the ball low inside the post to score for his sixth successive league match.

By contrast Olivier Giroud had gone 15 league games without a goal but he was presented with one as Eliaquim Mangala neglected to mark him at a corner and he planted his header beyond Joe Hart. Even that corner had been a calamity – conceded by Gaël Clichy as he tried to head the ball back to Hart, only for it to trickle just past a post.

Arsenal’s defensive vulnerabted midfielder Sean Longstaff has been left hanging by Manchester United vice-chairman Ed Woodward. The London Evening Standard says the frustration over the time taken to conclude transfers has been felt among targets, as well as fans. United have soility was exposed again early in the second half when Kevin De Bruyne won possession on halfway ahead of Nacho Monreal and drove forward. Challenges melted ahead of him, the space opened up and he struck a low shot that Petr Cech, maybe unsighted, was slow to react to.

Kelechi Iheanacho squandered a chance to wrap the game up and it proved pivotal when, this time, City backed off and Alexis Sánchez made his way forward. Mangala was again caught out and Giroud cleverly played the ball back to Sánchez, who steered his shot home from the edge of the area.

Agüero went close with a volley after a clever one-two with De Bruyne, then substitute Wilfried Bony rattled the bar with a hooked volley.

“Winning the three points [would have been] a good way to say goodbye,” Pellegrini said.

Instead it could be an uncomfortable farewell.

Burnley’s honest toil sets an example for all clubs to follow

content_img

data-js=”article-body” data-insert-mobile-adslot>

Amid the rush to over-complicate football, words such as respect, discipline, pride and passion sometimes seem quaint, but they are tenets of the Dyche regime and key ingredients in extracting the honest toil he expects from his players, without which the importance placed on sports science would not mean so much.

Endeavour is as entrenched at Burnley as ego is absent. Speak to what is largely a British core of players and they will tell you they have not encountered a dressing room like it. It helps that about 60 per cent of the squad relegated last season remain at the club, but there are no cliques.

Visit tMoyes says he will “make it impossible” for West Ham United not to extend his 18-month contract.Moyes has returned to East London to replace Manuel Pellegrini.”There is a clause in my contract to extend the deal,” said Moyes. “I’m going to make it imhe training ground at lunchtime and every day a different group of players will be sat with each other. When Andre Gray signed from Brentford for £9 million last summer, the striker who has just been voted Championship Player of the Year for the 24 goals that have spearheaded Burnley’s promotion push presented a direct threat to Sam Vokes’s place in the team. The pair now car-share.

Ashley Barnes, another forward, drives a Smart car. Anyone who even hints at getting a little big for his boots is playfully slapped down. The players take pleasure in recording personalised birthday messages for every young fan on the Junior Clarets membership scheme. Walk into the training ground wearing a cap and captain Tom Heaton is just as likely to tell you to remove it as the catering or security staff.

The impact on the dressing room of players such as Heaton, midfielder David Jones and centre-half Michael Keane, all of whom came through the ranks at Manchester United under the watchful eye of Sir Alex Ferguson, has been contagious. But it is another individual, whose professionalism has been the subject of multiple inquests during a controversial career, schedule for the upcoming CONCACAF Olympic Games Final Qualification Tournament for eight teams early in the New Year, with the United States, Canada and Jamaica, who all participated in the 2019 Women’s World Cup in France, participating along withwho has been as important as any. Eyebrows were raised when Dyche signed Joey Barton last August.

Only a few months earlier, Barton had reacted to some provocation on Twitter in the wake of QPR’s relegation by claiming that as “c–p” and “overrated” as his team might be, “at least we don’t have to live in Burnley”, alongside a picture of a desolate town centre. When one fan claimed he had ts Manchester City to steer clear of conceding free-kicks against Burnley on Tuesday. The Clarets pose a tough aerial threat with bruising forward duo Chris Wood and Ashley Wood.”Defend high and try to play as much as possible – to avoid set-pieces askilled his chances of ever signing for Burnley, Barton replied sarcastically: “Gutted. Always dreamed of living there.”

Yet as Barton prepares to face his former club a year on,. He was one of four Burnley players, along with Gray, Keane and Heaton, named in the PFA Championship Team of the Year and with good reason. He has been their beating heart, a symbol of their work ethic and spirit.

When Burnley trailed to Bolton Wanderers with 20 minutes left in February and Middlesbrough last month, it was Barton who grabbed the ball out of his own net, raced to the centre circle to get the game back under way and willed his team-mates to force their way back into the match. On both occasions they did.

Since losing 3-0 at Hull City on Boxing Day, Burnley have gone 21 matches unbeaten in the league, a post-war record for a single season. Incredibly, they have lost just 10 of their past 93 Championship games under Dyche, dating back to the 2012/13 campaign.

Off the pitch, the statistics look just as good. In their accounts for 2014/15, Burnley posted a post-tax profit of £30.1 million, with wages accounting for only 37 per cent of turnover, and by next summer they will open their new £10.6 million training centre. Few clubs in the country are as well run.

In an age when there is an obsession with possession-based football, the Premier League is likely to be won by Leicester City, while the Champions League and Championship could end up being won by Atlético Madrid and Burnley respectively, teams who run themselves into the ground and do not worry about dominating the ball.

With Burnley’s two title rivals, Middlesbrough and Brighton, playing each other on the final day, Dyche’s team could have secured promotion by this evening. Fortune certainly favours the hard-working.

Notre Dame vs. USC odds, line: 2019 College football picks, predictions from simulation on 68-42 run

content_img

The Fighting Irish are looking to to keep rolling at home and stay in the hunt for a spot in the College Football Playoff when No. 9 hosts its longtime rival, the Southern Cal Trojans on Saturday. The Irish have won 14 consecutive games on their turf and have beaten the Trojans in their past two meetings. Quarterback and a potent running game give the big-play defense more than enough points to work with. The Trojans have combined some big wins with confounding losses and fell to No. 17 before a bye week. Kickoff from Notre Dame Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m. ET. The Fighting Irish are 10.5-point favorites in the latest Notre Dame vs. odds, while the over-under for total points scored is 58.5. Before making your Notre Dame vs. USC picks, be sure to check out the predictions from the SportsLine Projection Model.

The SportsLine Projection Model simulates every FBS college football game 10,000 times, and those who have followed it have seen huge returns. Over the past four-plus years, the proprietary computer model has generated an eye-popping profit of over $4,300 for $100 plnager Maurizio Sarri’s system for his problems with fans this season. His performances have made him a target for criticism from Chelsea supporters, but he explains that Sarri’s decision to change the nature of his role during the course of the campaiayers on its top-rated college football against the spread picks.

Now this is what you call an about-face. Less than a week after Tennessee linebacker Darrin Kirkland Jr. announced on Twitter that he was transferring, it now appears he will be stayiis demanding strict discipline during the coronavirus suspension.Laporte revealed Guardiola has warned his team to stay in shape – and not go out in public. He said: “They have given us a daily training schedule. They trust in you and you have to beng with the Vols.

According to Pruitt, the decision came after he met with Kirkland and his parents over the weekend to discuss his plans. The consensus from the meeting was that Tennessee would be the best place for Kirkland to finish out his career despite injury problems.

Kirkland’s original tweet has since been deleted.

linebacker career started out with a bang, when he finished fourth on the team in tackles as a freshman in 2015 and earned freshman All-SEC honors.

It abruptly ended on Thursday when the redshirt junior announced pool have included new signing Harvey Elliott in their 25-man Champions League squad. After becoming the youngest player to feature in the Premier League last season for Fulham, the 16-year-old decided to sign a professional contract with the Reds.Ki-his transfer from the program.

Kyler Murray playing for Oklahoma is equal parts possibility and hypocrisy from NCAA

content_img

quarterback will be making close to $5 million this year. That’s a fact, and perhaps a record for the Sooners’ . Somehow, the pillars of amateurism haven’t collapsed just yet.

You know, the pillars that say money is the root of all evil in college athletics, unless it is being made by those who control college athletics.

The pillars that hold up the NCAA’s amateur ideal. The disparate ideals that get a kid suspended taking a lunch from a booster, but allow that same millionaire to win a Heisman Trophy.

The pillars that prop up the NCAA’s indefensible version of amateurism.

The irony of Murray being an amateur college quarterback and a professional baseball outfielder at the same time is rife with equal parts possibility and hypocrisy.

Murray was by the Oakland Athletics. In the midst of competing for the starting quarterback job at Oklahoma, Murray signed his baseball contract on Friday. As a surprise top-10 pick, he will play one more season of before playing baseball for pay.

NCAA rules allow professionals in one sport to receive compensation while retaining college eligibility in another. Nothing new there except to question Oakland’s wisdom in allowing its top pick to put his body and baseball career at risk for one more season under center.

The likes of John Elway and have played pro baseball and college football at the same time, but perhaps never at this powerful of a program, at college football’s most important position or for this much money.

Murray signed for a reported $4.7 million, took batting practice with the A’s then declared, “Right now, it’s about getting ready to go win a [football] national championship.”

Just so as the Sooners know who’s paying for the after party.

Whether Murray wins the starting job at Oklahoma is sort of irrelevant. It’s what he represents. Whatever money he gets, he has earned. It’s that his teammates pretty much can’t (legally) earn a dime.

Aside from the head coaches and perhaps a coordinator or two, Murray will be the highest paid person on the field at his games this fall.

He will be a highly-compensated symbol for a system that has never been more under attack. How do you justify not paying players something further when a defensive coordinator ( Dave Aranda) is making more than 80 head coaches ($2.5 million)?

How do you deny them something more when last year it was revealed the .

“The optics are what the writers make of them,” Delany said smugly.

How is a scholarship enough when 29 NCAA football players have died — mostly in workouts — since 2000?

The walls are closing in on the NCAA. The administrators who continue to defend the system just have to know where they escape hatch is.

It’s been less than four years since a district court judge found the NCAA was in violation of anti-trust laws in the landmark O’Bannon trial. It seems inevitable that sooner or later players are going to be able to earn something from their name, image and likeness.

The argument against is practically neanderthal. president Harris Pastides testified in the O’Bannon case that payments “would create a wedge between those student athletes who receive the funds and those who don’t.”

In the same case, NCAA president Mark Emmert said payments would “certainly impact the way other student-athletes perceive them.”

The suits seem to be actually suggesting that paying players would divide a locker room. How preposterous.

In the case of Oklahoma, Murray might be the best chance the Sooners have of returning to the College Football Playoff. That’s not a locker room poison, that’s hope for life after .

It has come to this: Murray’s baseball salary allowed by the NCAA is literally the NCAA’s argument for corruption.

“Google the NCAA’s definition of amateurism,” said Gerald Gurney, University of Oklahoma assistant professor and NCAA reformer. “Essentially it says athletes should not be paid because they need to concentrate on schoolwork. They can’t juggle two balls at the sameGreenwood. The Sun says United are not planning on rewarding Greenwood with a new deal after his first-team breakthrough.Greenwood, 17, made four appearances for United last term and started against Cardiff on the final day.Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitt time. That’s asinine and ridiculous.”

At first, it might seem the root of this discussion is NCAA rules allow an athlete to turn pro in one sport and retain amateur eligibility in another.

But the real argument is how much the public and fans can stomach any college athlete being paid before they’re not considered college (thus, amateur) athletes.

Apparently, quite a bit.

Cost of attendance provides players between $5,000 and $10,000 per year just for being … athletes.Bowl gifts — typically capped at $550 — are nothing more than rewards for playing football. Men’s and women’s Final Four participants have their own gift suites to enjoy. Sports Business Daily reported basketball players who win their regular-season conference, conference tournament and .All three military academies (, , ) routinely pay salaries to cadets in service to the country.Olympic stipends allowed by the NCAA range from the modest to the extravagant. swimmer for his home country of Singapore for winning Ole a new hero in Bruno Fernandes. The Portuguese, signed from Sporting Lisbon last month, scored his first goal for United in Sunday’s 3-0 win over Watford at Old Trafford. And Crouch believes Fernandes’ bravado is exactly what the Red Devils have beenympic gold.Schools are allowed to pay five-figure insurance premiums of their prospects. One anonymous coach told me last year a player at  legally over the course of his career.

Most of these are not benefits allowed to the normal student. Just don’t ask the NCAA what a normal student is.

No one is going to deny that Murray deserves every penny he can get from the A’s. It’s only because he plays a different sport that he is not considered corrupted by NCAA standards.

“It’s very confusing,” Kyle Parker said.

Parker might be the best and most recent comparison to Murray. The former quarterback played football after getting a $1.4 million bonus with the in 2010.

After six years spent mostly in the minors, he returned to Clemson in 2017 to complete his degree.

“It’s leaning more toward the athlete,” Parker said, “but it’s still completely lopsided how much money college athletes make and [how much schools] generate off of amateur [athletes].”

In a way, it’s not a matter of paying players, it’s about semantics. What one man calls improper compensation, another calls amateurism.

“I have no issue with Kyler Murray at all,” Gurney said. “This is a demonstration of the NCAA’s inconsistent and ridiculous definition of amateurism.”

Parker said he was offered endorsements as a baseball player but th the Azzurri.“My relationship with Naples is normal,” he told Otto Channel.“I spend a lot of time outside the city, and when I return in the evening the only thing I enjoy in Naples is a restaurant or pizzeria.“This city could be nicer with scouldn’t accept them because he was still playing college football.

The same standard would apply to Murray.

“Any kind of advertising that you would have cashed in on playing in a big league city, you have to decline,” Parker said.

More absurdity. As a football player, Murray cannot accept so much as a free burger from a booster. As a baseball player, he has enough money to buy his entire offensive line a steak dinner. I’m getting headaches just writing about it.

For 50 years, until 1956, the NCAA essentially banned players from getting anything in outside compensation.

Now? Some players are sending cash home because of the myriad ways they can get money.

Some of the progress is common sense. Some of it reflects increasing pressure from the courts. All of it is way overdue.

Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby perhaps provided the most insight. He told the reform-minded Knight Commission college athletes are neither pros nor amateurs.

“I think it’s a completely different genre of his own,” Bowlsby said. “It doesn’t exist anywhere else in the world …”

Maybe that’s the biggest problem. Kyler Murray isn’t the outlier. The system is.

USC football Spring Game 2018: date, schedule, players to watch, who replaces Sam Darnold

content_img

With the Coliseum renovation project ongoing, USC will not be hosting its traditional spring game this year. Instead, Clay Helton and the Trojans will hold a end of spring practice that is open to the public on Cromwell Field (Loker Track Stadium). The “game” will be Saturday, April 14 starting at noon PT and will be shown live on the Pac-12 Networks. The top storyline from this spring has been the competition to replace Sam Darnold. Redshirt sophomore Matt Fink and redshirt freshman Jack Sears are the only two scholarship quarterbacks on campus right now and both want rto Mancini says Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo both reached the pinnacle of the game in different ways.Speaking with Corriere della Sera, Mancini was asked who was the superior player – Barcelona captain Messi or Juventus striker Ronaldo.Howeverto be running the show when the Trojans open against UNLV this fall.Fink is the only quarterback with any game experience, including a 51-yard touchdown run in mop-up duty against Oregon State. He has been the leader in the clubhouse, but has yet to separate himself from Sears or even incoming freshman J.T. Daniels, who won’t arrive until the summer.Sears replaced Darnold at San Clemente High School and e is looking to do the same at USC. It has been an up-and-down spring for Sears, but he bounced back during Saturday’s scrimmage with a couple of long touchdowns, which could propel him to a breakout performance in the spring game.Senior outside linebacker Porter Gustin was a mystery man most of last season following toe surgery and a bicep tear. Now bulked up to 270 pounds, he is fully back and ready to make opposing offenses feel the pain. He has had a hand in the quarterback competition as well, forcing both Fink and Sears to scramble and get rid of the ball early. True senior running back Aca’cedric Ware came into USC with Ronald Jones II as a one-two punch of talented Texas tailbacks. But with Jones earning the starting role and subsequent injuries to Ware, Trojan fato Chelsea under new manager Frank Lampard.Premier League winner Drinkwater was the forgotten man in Maurizio Sarri’s one and only season at Stamford Bridge. The Blues finished in third and won the Europa League, but Drinkwater didn’t make a single apns have yet to see his full potential as a tailback. Former five-star Stephen Carr is out this spring with an injury and Ware has taken advantage and emerged as a force for the USC rushing attack. Redshirt senior cornerback Jonathan Lockett was poised to start at nickel for USC before an injury shelved him for the entire 2017 season. Lockett is now healthy, playing both corner and nickel, and has been making plays all spring long. The former Mater Dei standout is part of a much deeper secondary that shouLeicester City forward Ryan Loft has joined League Two side Carlisle United on a season-long loan deal. The 21-year-old joined Spurs’ academy in 2013 and was loaned to Braintree, Stevenage and Exeter before signing a two-year deal with the Foxes in 2018.”We wanted to have a different type of striker available. It was important we had that variety, and Ryan gives us that,” said boss Steven Pressley.ld show marked improvement this season.

Despite two transfers in a week, Clemson’s quarterback situation is just fine in 2018

content_img

For the second time in less than a week, has lost a quarterback to transfer. Fortunately for the Tigers, their depth chart at that position remains insanely good.

Clemson announ it has been revealed. The ex-Manchester United manager dismissed calls for van Dijk to be includedoved second-half performance for their 0-0 draw with FA Cup opponents Manchester United.Despite Wolves having the ball in the back of the net when Matt Doherty’s header beat Sergio Romero which was then disallowed for a handball by the Irishman, the in his squad during his time at Celtic, as he “didn’t defend forward”.The Athletic reports Van Gaal’s scouts also warned their boss that van Dijk had sced on Monday that will transfer to another program after getting his degree. Israel, who appeared in two gamstar Fabrizio Maiello admits he was the brains behind the plan.He hatched the plan when he was behind bars along with a another group of inmates who were members of a notorious crime syndicate. But the plan failed after Maiello lost his nerve and instes and completed all four of his pass attempts as a redshirt freshman in 2016, did not play this past season. In high school, he surpassed Tim Tebow’s state record for touchdown passes in a single season. At one point last offseason, Israel was in the competition to be the Tigers’ starting quarterback, but an illness over the summer derailed those hopes.

Israel is the second quarterback to transfer from Clemson in the past week. Last Friday, also he was transferring out.

But these aren’t hard times for Clemson’s quarterback room. Kelly Bryant returns as a senior and the situation behind him is loaded thanks to a depth chart with , Chase Bryce and Trevor Lawrence. Johnson and Brice were members of the 2017 class with the former earning a five-star label as one of the top quarterback recruits in the country. Johnson also saw playing time in seven games this past season. Lawrence was the No. 1 overall recruit for the 2018 signing class and enrolled early.

Barring injury, Bryant’s job is likely safe for next season; the real battle will begin in 2019 with (presumably) two former five-star recruits in the mix.

Interestingly, Clemson won’t be the only playoff-caliber program with an intriguing quarterback situation. and have incumbent starters in and . However, Hurts was benched in the national title win in favor of freshman and Fromm’s backup will likely be former five-star recruit Justin Fields.
