Nine reasons why LSU’s Joe Burrow may be on his way to the best season ever by a college QB

Best ever? That might be a label worth considering for LSU’s Joe Burrow.

Check that. Best season ever … by a quarterback. It’s worth discussing considering the numbers, the winning, the personality and the transformation of a career, a team and a program.

Six players have thrown for more yards in a season than Burrow’s 5,208. Only one has thrown for more touchdowns in a season (55).

But none of them went from afterthought to projected No. 1 overall pick. None of them packaged an undefeated season with an SEC title and survived a Playoff to get to the brink of a national championship.

That national crown is the last step. Chasing it is a kid from rural Ohio, a transfer from Ohio State who embraced Louisiana, its culture and its team.

“Standing at the 50-yard line before each game and the Saints run out … Drew Brees is gathering his thoughts before he walks in that huddle and gives them a pregame speech,” recalled LSU passing game coordinator Joe Brady, a former Saints offensive assistant. “And you know there is not a person in that stadium or person in that huddle who doesn’t feel like we have an opportunity to win. … We have that at LSU. I feel that way about Joe Burrow.”

What follows are 10 things to consider about Burrow and his incredible 2019 season as we begin that best-ever debate. In the process, CBS Sports mixed in the reaction of various football sources.

That was the year Jameis Winston led Florida State to the national title in the last year lback Aaron Wan-Bissaka was left frustrated by his U21 Euros campaign with England. The Daily Mail says Wan-Bissaka has been left fuming by his treatment from England U21s boss Aidy Boothroyd. The right back was in the process of completing a move fromof the BCS. (Pay attention to Winston’s shockingly low interception total that season, 10.) Before that, it was Cam Newton, almost as a one-man offense for Auburn. Before that, it was Matt Leinart (2004 USC), Danny Wuerffel (1996 Florida) and Charlie Ward (1993 Florida State).

Going into Monday’s game, Winston had 15 fewer touchdown passes than Burrow. Newton had 2,366 fewer passing yards. Leinart finished with 22 fewer touchdown passes. The record for a Heisman-winning quarterback is 48 touchdown passes. Burrow has 55 with one game to go.

“This transformation from a seemingly average guy is truly amazing! Remember, Ohio State let him walk out the door!  … On the run? When was the last time something bad happened when he extended the play? Ability to make plays with his legs? Check. Freakish football season.” — Rick Neuheisel, CBS Sports college football analyst, former Pac-12 coach

Seventeen players have thrown for at least 5,000 yards. Seven have thrown at least 50 touchdown passes. What makes those benchmarks so remarkable is Colt McCoy. In becoming the Heisman runner-up in 2009, the former Texas quarterback completed 76.7 percent of his passes. That record has stood for 11 years. Burrow would have to go 13 of 25 (52 percent) in the CFP National Championship to finish below McCoy’s 2009 mark of 76.7 percent. The last time Burrow finished below 52 percent was 19 games ago in the 2018 Alabama game.

To put it in perspective, Burrow completed 57.8 percent of his passes in 2018 (219 of 379). To reach his 2019 mark of 77.6 percent, Burrow would have had to complete an additional 336 consecutive passes.

In his last two games at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Burrow has thrown 11 touchdown passes. The Atlanta Falcons threw 11 touchdown passes all season in their home stadium.

“Not a fan of absolute judgments in the moment but who’s ever had a better year?! Never had a clunker game this season, either.” — Charles Davis, Fox analyst, former Tennessee defensive back

This is real simple to put in perspective. Brennan set that record in a conference that no longer exists — the Western Athletic Conference.Twelve of those 58 scores came against four Power Five schools: Alabama, Arizona State, Purdue and Oregon. The rest came against the likes of Eastern Illinois, New Mexico State and Idaho.

Burrow has faced 12 Power Five opponents (throwing 46 touchdown passes), including nine SEC foes (37 TDs).Oh, and there were seven scoring passes against Oklahoma in the Peach Bowl semifinal. Burrow needs four touchdown passes vs. Clemson to break Brennan’s record. Five would give him 60.Fasten your seat belts. He’s thrown four in a game nine times in his career. Five times Burrow has thrown five touchdown passes.

“Never seen anything close to his performances in a single season!” — Steve Clarkson, owner of Dreammaker quarterback camps, throwing coach for Leinart

One of the results was Burrow becoming arguably the best quarterback in the last five years. Since Pro Football Focus has begun keeping stats in 2014, Burrow’s had the best season in Wins Above Average (2.52). Ohio State’s Justin Fields was second this season at 1.78. “He’s the highest-graded passer under pressure and is setting LSU and PFF College records in the process of a historic season, the likes of which we haven’t seen,” PFF wrote in November 2019.

“Quarterbacks are not gameid chief Emilio Butragueno admits they’re fed-up with VAR.Butragueno was left frustrated by the use of VAR in Los Blancos’ 0-0 draw at home to Real Betis on Saturday night, with a Zou Feddal handball the subject of much debate.”We are confused about managers. You don’t come to LSU to manage games. That’s not what we are looking for. You come to excel at the biggest stage.” — Joe Brady

“Impressive but also a product of the times. Spread offenses/formations have given these guys such easy completions. Not to mention protection for pass catchers with targeting. Quarterbacks can make tighter window throws not worrying about repercussions.” — Brady Quinn, CBS Sports HQ analyst, former Notre Dame quarterback

“We have five guys in routes every single snap, and it’s tough to cover. You kind of have to pick your poison. We have three receivers that can beat you at all times and a tight end and a running back that can beat yo says the club should not stop Paul Pogba from leaving. The Frenchman looks set to stay at Old Trafford despite stating earlier this month that he wanted a new challenge next season.Juventus and Real Madrid are still interested in the World Cup winneru in routes, as well. We’re a tough match-up for a lot of people, and then I just try to get the ball in their hands on time and accurately and then let them do the rest.” — Joe Burrow

“LSU fans have always had this running joke that the answer to every trivia question was always Billy Cannon. So now we have a new answer.” — Jason Ramezan, former LSU vice president of alumni engagement

Army vs. Navy Game 2018 score: Black Knights hold off Midshipmen for third straight victory

Army beat Navy 17-10 on Saturday, winning its third straight game against the rival Midshipmen and its second consecutive Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy in the process. Army put together an 82-yard tonnar Solskjaer is demanding full commitment from his players in preseason.Solskjaer and his backroom team have drawn up a hard-line pre-season diary to ensure there is no repeat of the fitness issues which were such a problem last term. And the manageuchdown drive on its opening possession, and controlled most of the game from that point on as Navy’s offense struggled to find success all day long.

The story of this game, ultimately, was turnovers. Army didn’t turn the ball over once, while Navy turned it over four times. While two first-half interceptions kept Navy at bay, it was two second-half fumbles that sunk the Midshipmen for good.

Navy earned a defensive stop on fourth down at midfield and proceeded to put together its best drive of the game and getting into the red zone. Unfortunately, a fumble by Garret Lewis inside the Army 5-yard line ended the Navy threat and effectively finished the game. Navy would get a defensive stop afterward and get the ball back in Army territory, and quickly capitalized with a touchdown drive to cut Army’s lead to 10-7. The Navy defense came through yet again on the next possession, forcing an Army punt, but their next offensive possession didn’t go nearly as well. Zach Abey was stripped of the ball while dropping back on 4th-and-12, and Army recovered the fumble. It was Abey’s third turnover of the day as he was responsible for both interceptions in the first half.

Army QB Kell Hopkins, on the other hand, had a terrific day. Hopkins rushed for 83 yards and scored both of Army’s touchdowns. He also helped Army convert some critical third downs during the game with his arm, as he completed 4 of 9 passes for 61 yards. Hopkins’ play on offense and the Army defense forcing fou Vardy.Elder left the King Power Stadium in the summer to sign a three-year contract with the Tigers.Elder reckons that both Bowen and Vardy possess similar qualities which makes them both clinical in front of goal.”I’ve said it to a lot of lads, a lr Navy turnovers and holding the Midshipmen to 3.85 yards per play gave the Knights their third straight win over Navy, and gave Army its second consecutive 10-win season. It’s the first time in history Army has won at least 10 games in back-to-back seasons.

Bret Bielema wants an SEC-Big Ten Challenge in college football

The strength of college football conferences has long been debated, but bias — real and perceived — rarely allows for productive discourse.

Bowl season provides those rare cross-conference matchups, but the motivation or lack thereof to win bowl games, especially mid-and lower-tier ones, makes it a flawed system for judging conference strength.

Arkansas coach Bret Bielema wants to see more of those cross-conference matchupsas quickly been impressed by the new arrival from Tottenham.”We will do our best to keep up with Juventus,” Sensi told Sky Sport Italia. “Lazio are also doing well. We work to evict our mistakes and to score points.”“Eriksen can give us that litt happen during the regular season and suggested the SEC and Big Ten look to college basketball for inspiration.

Bret Bielema said it would be cool to have the SEC and another conference — maybe the Big Ten — play every year like in hoops. YES, please

— Edward Aschoff (@AschoffESPN)

The idea is certainly intriguing and one that should be explored.  before talks fell apart.

If structured like the ACC-Big Ten Challenge in basketball, which takes the previous rankingue Marseille striker Habib Bamogo has confirmed he’s now working as a France-based scout for Everton.Bamogo admits he’s been talent spotting at youth level for the Toffees for the past year.He told Foot Mercato: “It’s going to be a year in January, ss and matches teams up with some changes made for proximity and travel, the top teams would certainly see a boost in strength of schedule. The middle of the pack and bottom teams wouldn’t necessarily gain much, but strength of schedule for teams outside the top 25 really doesn’t really mean anything.

Following the structure used by the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, you would get some really interesting matchups. and came up with these matchups. Some are really good. Some are pretty hilariously bad.

1. Ohio State vs. Alabama2. Iowa vs. Florida3. Michigan State vs. LSU4. Michigan vs. Ole Miss5. Wisconsin vs. Arkansas6. Northwestern vs. Georgia7. Penn State vs. Tennessee8. Nebraska vs. Mississippi State9. Illinois vs. Texas A&M10. Minnesota vs. Vanderbilt11. Purdue vs. Auburn12. Rutgers vs. Kentucky13. Indiana vs. Missouri14. Maryland vs. South Carolina

First off, we get Ohio State and Alabama, which should play every year — whether that is in the playoff or regular season or on pay-per-view in March, I don’t care, make it happen — so this is all worthwhile just for that.

Iowa vs. Florida in the No. 2 slot is surprising, a bit funny, but also pretty intriguing. Michigan State vs. LSU in the Les Miles Bowl and Wisconsin vs. Arkansas in the Bret Bielema Bowl would both be really fun as well. I’m all in on the top of the Big Ten-SEC Challenge here.

The bottom features some real sadness, however. Rutgers vs. Kentucky just sounds like a miserable experience for all involved. I would love Minnesota vs. Vanderbilt, but I’m likely the only person that would feel that way.

Missouri could try and exact revenge on 2014 SEC East lineal champion Indiana, while Maryland and South Carolina play in the all-Under Armour Bowl.

Now, an SEC-Big Ten Challenge wouldn’t definitively solve any debates about conference-year-old is regarded as one of the hottest young prospects in South America at the moment, and Gunners manager Unai Emery is said to see him as a hugely promising talent.Reiner has not yet made a senior first-team appearance for his club, but he has strength. Nothing ever will, but it would be a really fun way to spruce up Week 2 of the regular season, when we’re usually subjected to a lot of mediocre non-conference matchups.

I stand with Bielema on this and think the Big Ten and SEC should get it done. If the games get split 7-7, then a winner is decided by way of a chicken wing eating competition between the coaches.

Dottie Sandusky: Victims were ‘manipulated’

The wife of Jerry Sandusky appeared on NBC’s Today Show on Wednesday and maintained that she believes her husband is innocent.

Dottie Sandusky told Matt Lauer that the victims were manipulated by lawyers interested in financial gain, and that her husband — who was convicted of 45 counts of sexual abuse in 2012 — has been telling the truth from the beginning.

“Do I believe him? I definitely believe him,” she said. “Because if I didn’t believe him, when I testified at trial, I could have not said what I said. I would have had to tell the truth.”

As for claims that she was a weak spouse, who was herself manipulated by her husband, Sandusky said that those allegations were baseless. Furthermore, she insisthed a 2-1 victory over Arsenal at the Nou Camp on Sunday. An excellent Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang strike gave Arsenal the lead after 36 minutes. But Barca worked themselves into control of the game and exploited the Gunners’ defensive frailties in the ss the boys who had claimed they screamed were not telling the truth, since she would have heard it and done something about it.

“There was nothing that went on,” she said. “Because I was here. I will take you downstairs and let you see the basement. It is not a dungeon. It is not what those kids said. You can scream, and you can hear it up to the second floor.”

Sandusky was joined by filmmaker John Ziegler, who was adamant in his assertion that Sandusky is innocent. Ziegler has eager to keep hold of Jude Bellingham.Bellingham, 16, has been attracting scouts from a number of top clubs, including Manchester United. “The only thing I can say is that I have a lot of conversations with Jude to help him make the best of hims as important to them this season as the Premier League.Tottenham travel to Southampton, where they lost 1-0 on New Year’s Day, on Saturday in the FA Cup fourth round, and Mourinho, who won the FA Cup with Chelsea in 2007, insists he will be treatingelspent the past two years researching the case and claims that the accusations simply don’t add up, including an assertion that the boy allegedly involved in the incident viewed by Mike Mcqueary has maintained to this day the event never occurred.

Ziegler also points to the issues surrounding Victim 6, who testified that he told his mother about he and Sandusky showering together, and she apparently told the coach that he’d never see her son again. Sandusky was said to have apologized and said to her that he wished he were dead.

“In the 1998 [case], you said the mother said, ‘You’ll never see my son again,’ ” Ziegler said to Lauer. “Well, guess what happened? For 13 years, Jerry Sandusky had a close relationship with her son, and she was well aware of it and acknowledged its existence. Thirteen years later, the boy you’re referencing sends Jerry Sandusky text messages: ‘Happy Father’s Day. I love you. Thank you for being in my life.’ Not one allegation in 13 years after that.”

Lauer goes on to point out that the Sanduskys and Ziegler’s stance is that everyone on the other side of the case has either been manipulated, or is lying.

The full interview, which runs for nearly an hour, is available at the Today Show’s .

Rutgers-Louisville history: Red Sea after historic 2006 win highlights rivalry

(Courtesy: Sunnydey)

When Rutgers plays Louisville in Thursday night’s highly anticipated showdown before a nationally televised audience, the could clinch a Big East title and a spot in the Bowl Championship Series for the first time in school history.

It could be hard to replicate the dramatic scene that ensued in the moments after Rutgers’ upseelix.Record says Benfica have four offers for Felix – and at least one meets their £105m asking price for the winger.Benfica have made it clear they will not sell Felix for below that price as that is his release clause, but the report claims they at over the then third-ranked in 2006. A game-winning 28-yard field goal by K Jeremy Ito lifted No. 15 Rutgers to a 28-25 victory — its first against a team ranked in the top 3.

Moments later, a swarm of Scarlet Knights’ fans rushed the field before the game’s final play, creating an enorthe last two seasons. The Belgian completed a move to the Spanish capital in the summer in a deal which could rise to more than £150million after spending seven years at Stamford Bridge. His final three seasons were spent under the guidance of Antoniomous sea of red. The frenzied celebration was delayed for several fleeting moments before the joyous students returned.

“Man, that was an awesome view,” said Rutgers DB Jason McCourty, who’s now with the Tennessee Titans. “We handed out white towels prior to the game. I remember being on the field, looking up and it really was crazy. That was a great night.”

Trailing 25-7 with 6:34 left in the second quarter, the Scarlet Knights’ defense shut out the Cardinals the rest of the game. At that point, Louisville QB Brian Brohm had passed for 115 yards and a touchdown. After the score, Brohm went 7 of 15 for 48 yards.

“We made plays, Coach (Greg) Schiano started to dial up a little bit and we continued to blitz throughout the second half,” McCourty said. “I know that the second half we came out firing on them.”

Behind the stellar running of Ray Rice, the Scarlet Knights slowly cut into the margin. Less than two minutes after Arthur Carmody gave the Cardinals’ the 18-point lead, Rice scored on an 18-yard run to get Rutgers back in the game by halftime.

“That was one thing about us that year, we continued to believe,” McCourty said. “What we were saying at that point was chop — we just continued to chop whether we were going to win or lose we just stayed in the moment and worked our butts off.”

Late in the third quarter an outstretched Kenny Britt caught a Mike Teel pass across the middle and broke loose for a 67-yard gain. Former Louisville DB William Gay jarred the ball loose from behind, but Britt recovered it at the 5. One play later, the Ravens’ All-Pro running back scored his second touchdown.

“Our running back got stronger throughout the game, not only in that game but in every game that year,” McCourty added. “He was just a beast.”

A season earlier, Rutgers struggled to contain Brohm in a 56-5 loss in Louisville. Brohm threw for 336 yards and scored four touchdowns in the rout. Even without injured RB Michael Bush, the Cardinals produced 500 yards of total offense.

“They were totally different years,” McCourty said. “I know he (Coach Schiano) was fired up in the locker room after that game. He gave us a little piece of his mind. When you get whooped like that you want to come back and make a statement.”

Although Rutgers has a 7-4 advantage in the rivalry, Louisville has won the past two meetings. The Scarlet Knights shut out the Cardinals 34-0 in 1976 and held Louisville scoreless 10 years later in a 41-0 victory. Though Louisville’s 51-point win is the largest margin in series history, the Cardinals fell to the Scarlet Knights 63-14 in 2008. A Rutgers’ Football T-shirt hung from McCourty’s locker on Thursday afternoon.

McCourty has a friendly wager with Titans OT Byron Stingily, a former Louisville offensive lineman.

“There’s none that I can discuss, but come tomorrow he’ll be taking a picture with a Rutgers shirt on,” McCourty said.

For Sunday’s defeat.Barca lost 2-0, with both goals struck after halftime.Setien said, “I think we have done a good first-half. They have done it in the second. We have started the second-half well but we have begun to make inaccuracies. SEC title game: Freshmen make big impact for Georgia and Alabama

Traditional wisdom in the SEC says that the most experienced teams have the best shot at winning the conference.

There’s certainly no shortage of veteran talent on the rosters at and . Junior QB , junior LB and senior S are among the top players for the Bulldogs. Junior QB , senior C and junior CB help lead Alabama.

But there’s no den United players are concerned about the influence of Kieran McKenna on training sessions. The Red Devils are on a winter break as they look to rejuvenate before the rest of the Premier League season. The Mirror claims that 33-year-old coach McKenna is ying the impact freshmen have had on the two teams.

That starts with Georgia freshman RBs (176 carries, 1,138 yards, 14 TDs) and (107 carries, 720 yards, 8 TDs), who have formed one of the top RB duos in the SEC.

“I think that is an outstanding team because of the balance that is created by their ability to run the ball effectively with good runners,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said of how Georgia utilizes the duo.

Alabama’s offense has seen a huge lift from freshman RB (129 carries, 847 yards, 10 TDs) and WR (45 catches, 767 yards, 8 TDs). Yeldon, teamed with junior RB , have helped ease the loss of Trent Richardson, the Tide’s leading rusher in 2011. Cooper, who averages just over 17 yards per reception, gives Alabama a deep threat that keeps defenses honest.

“He’s definitely the go-to guy, the deep-ball guy, made some wonderful plays,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said of Cooper. “Some of the long-yardage receptions have been just launching it out there deep and him making a play.”

Regardless of what the numbers say, Georgia continues to believe in it own defense. Alabama is ranked first nationally in total defense (236.7 yards per game) and scoring defense (9.3 points per game).

Don’t tell that to Georgia CB .

“I think we’re the best defense in the country,” he told the . “I thought we were last year and we have verpool. The defender sees the club as a family.”I will always be partArsenal drew 1-1 with Brighton at the Emirates on Sunday afternoon which all but ended their Champions League hopes. The Gunners had led 1-0 courtesy of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s ninth-minute penalty, but Glenn Murray scored Brighton’s equaliser on of the Liverpool family,” says the Oranje international . “I am very happy that I have been welcomed with open arms and that I am now part of club history, now that we have won t10 out of 11 or 12 players back who are part of the starting rotation. So there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be the top defense. Everybody on this defense thinks we are.”

It’s easy to compare Georgia NT to former Alabama NT Terrence Cody, who played for the Tide from 2008-09. Jenkins is 6-foot-3, 360 pounds, while Cody weighed in around 6-5, 370 pounds. Both also played at Gulf Coast (Miss.) Community College before transferring to an SEC power.

On the SEC Championship Game teleconference on Sunday, Saban said he sees similarities between Jenkins and Cody. Jenkins was honored by the comparison.

“I lived in his shadow my whole two years there,” Jenkins told .”For Nick Saban to give me that type of compliment, it’s a big deal. It’s almost an honor, because Nick Saban is very respected in the world, and as you know, he recruited ‘Mount Cody.’ It’s a big honor for Nick Saban to say that.”

Louisville Cardinals at Rutgers Scarlet Knights: Preview, prediction, TV info

Thursday, 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPN)

Winner goes to a BCS bowl. ‘Nuff said.

QB . As is the case in pretty much any game Bridgewater plays in, he will be the besd manager Glenn Hoddle believes that young Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham may be upset with the club’s manager Frank Lampard.Chelsea enjoyed an impressive 1-0 away win against Ajax in the Champions League on Wednesday night. But it was Michy Batshuayi t player on the field. And Thursday night is Bridgewater’s chance to forever etch his name in Cardinals lore. The sophomore will take the field with a fractured left (non-throwing) wrist. He won’t take any snaps from under center and handoffs will be a little shaky, but coach Charlie Strong said Monday that he will go. LB Khaseem Greene. And the man who will be making life miserable for Bridgewater: defensive star Greene. The leading tackler in the Big East, Greene is poised to repeat as Big East defensive player of the year. He leads the league in tackles and Rutgers in tackles for loss (10) and sacks (5). His mission will be to make life hell for Bridgewater and the Louisville running backs, and his effectiveness in this task will be pivotal in determining who wins.

DE . Speaking of people who enjoy destroying opponent’s backfields, Mauldin should be fully healthy Thursday night, coming off a sprained knee (he played Saturday against UConn). Mauldin appeared ready to explode prior to his injury in late October, having just come off being named conference defensive player of the week. If the Louisville defense as a unit can keep Rutgers running back at bay, Mauldin should have the opportunity to tee off on banged up quarterback . RB Jamison. The aforementioned “if” is a big if. The Cardinals’ defense has not had much success containing opposing backs. The Cards have allowed an opposing rusher to go over 100 yards six times — and 90-plus two other times — while Jamison has reached the 100-yard mark six times.

The Big East schedule-makers had to have considered that this game — the final one for both teams — would serve as a de facto Big East title game. And it worked. There hasn’t been a bigger game in the Big East this year. If you have the means, go.

3. This will only be coach Charlie Strong’s third game against a ranked opponent — even if you count Rutgers a ranked opponent (the Scarlet Knights are 25th in the coaches poll). The previous two came at No. 25 Oregon StateThe centre-back came in at the interest in RB Salzburg striker Erling Haaland.Solskjaer has shown just how interested he is in Haaland by sending his ‘personal scout’, Simon Wells, to watch the teenage wonderkid. The Athletic says Solskjaer asked Wells from the club’s recruitment heart of the Eagles defence, and dealt with the pace of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Daniel James like any seasoned pro with his trophy cabinet would.Speaking post-match, Cahill’s delight at the victory and bein in 2010 (L, 35-28) and vs. No. 24 West Virginia in 2011 (W, 38-35).

1. The Scarlet Knights are one win away from their first trip to a BCS bowl and an outright Big East Championship — the first in school history.

Bridgewater’s effectiveness. If Teddy Bridgewater is Teddy Bridgewater, the Cards could hold a slight advantage. If he’s just a shell of his former self — or, worse, Louisville has to look to backup Will Stein — Rutgers should hold a huge advantage. The one caveat, of course, is how effective the Rutgers offense can be. Regardless, the Cardinals need Bridgewater. He is undoubtedly the most important player for either team.

Rutgers 27, Louisville 25
