lthough Chris Hughton, Brighton’s manager, maintains Premier League survival remains the priority, dressing-room attention is fixed firmly on FA Cup progress.

“That’s our focus now. We can do special things. We can get to Wembley for the semi-finals and you never know what might happen,” said Lewis Dunk, the stand-in captain who showed true leadership qualities in Brighton’s backline on Saturday.

Dunk played a full part in Brighton’s wild celebrations at the final whistle on Saturday. Dunk said: “It’s giving something back to the fans. I’m a local boy, they are the rival club so I’m always going to get it. It’s just nice to celebrate in their ground at the end.”

He also hailed Knockaert’s stunning winner, saying “It was a special finish and you could see what it meant to us at the end. We need people to stand up like that and he did. He couldn’t have placed it any better.”

Dunk epitomised Brighton’s determination and resilience, and is being backed by his manager for a call-up to the England set-up when Gareth Southgate names his squad for the two forthcoming Euro qualifiers on Wednesday.

Hughton said: “He’s at that level. What got him the cap in the first place is what he has now. There would not be any player in the England manager’s thinking that is not going to be up and down. I don’t think he’s changed. He is still the same level of player as he ever was.”

Chris Hughton, Brighton’s manager, believed the turning point came when ref Stuart Attwell failed to spot a Jeff Hendrick handball inside the Burnley penalty area just before Barnes scored after being brought down by Mat Ryan, the Brighton goalkeeper.

data-js=”article-body” data-insert-mobile-adslot>

Morata revealed he took advice from one of his new Chelsea team-mates who will be in Singapore to greet him. “I spoke with (Cesar) Azpilicueta and he told me everything is OK, and he found it easy,” said Morata.

“The Premier League is one of the best in the world, so I’m happy to be here.” Morata had looked set to join Manchester United before Jose Mourinho hijacked Chelsea’s interest in Romelu Lukaku, whic talk of Lampard blocking a new contract offer being made to Willian. But the manager says he’s yet to speak with his former teammate. He told chelseafc.com: “It does feel different, but in the short period I have been in charge it changes very quicklh resulted in the Blues moving for the 24-year-old.

Questioned on how close he came to moving to Old Trafford, Morata added: “I don’t know, the most important thing is I’m here playing for Chelsea. Finally I’m here.”

Morata’s move brings an end to a three-year wait to work with Conte, who signed him for Juventus in 2014 and failed in a bid to take him to Chelsea last summer.

Conte quit Juventus before the pair could work together, but the Spaniard has remained grateful for the faith Chelsea’s head coach has shown in him.

“I’m going to the team managed by the coach who has placed the most faith in me and that’s great for me,” said Morata. “I’m very happy.”

Speaking in April, Morata revealed the impact Conte had made on him by saying: “Conte is the manager who most ‘bet’ on me, without even ever having had me in his team.

“I’m very conscious of that. He bet on me for Juventus but left before I arrived, then he wanted me at Chelsea come what may. He knows me better than I could imagine, I’m sure, and that’s important. It motivates you to work hard, train well.

“I feel indebted to him because he’s the coach that most trusted in me, most wanted me,diola is delighted with the form of Rodri in preseason.Guardiola paid tribute to another impressive display from Rodri as City rounded off a successful Asia Tour with a fine 3-1 win over Yokohama F Marinos. “Yeah. Kevin (De Bruyne) made another great who made me feel I could perform at the highest level. And yet I’ve never had the fortune to actually work with him. I’m sure sooner or later I will.”

On the fact he almost joined Chelsea last summer, Morata added: “Various Premier League coaches called to tell me to play for them. I said yeah, I’d like to, that if I had to leave I would almost certainly go to London, but that I didn’t know what Madrid would do. I knew they’d bring me back, but I didn’t know if it was to keep me or sell me.

“I spoke directly to Mauricio Pochettino and Antonio Conte, although the norm is clubs call my dad or agent. Madrid said they didn’t want to sell. I remember talking to my dad then and him saying ‘This guy (Conte) is going to win the League there (in England).”

Real paid tribute to Morata ahead of his move to Chelsea by releasing a statement on their website that read: “The club wishes to express its thanks for the dedication, professionalism and exemplary conduct displayed by the player over the years, spanning his time in our academy right through to his spell as a member of the first-team squad.”

Another of Chelsea’s summer signings, central defender Antonio Rudiger, is also expected to join up with Conte’s squad in Singapore after complan Dijk says they’re unharmed from last season’s Premier League title heartbreak.Van Dijk believes that Liverpool’s Champions League success healed the scars of losing the Premier League title today’s opponents Manchester City on the final day.Heeting his post-Confederations Cup break.

Southampton 0 Man City 3: Vincent Kompany inspires hard-earned win for efficient City

content_img

data-js=”article-body” data-insert-mobile-adslot>

As days at the office go, few can have been more satisfying for Pep Guardiola than this. No wonder he wore a full beam grin at the end.

“I’m so, so happy,” the Manchester City manager exuded. “I’m so happy for the players, it was so important for them ahead of the [FA Cup] semi-final.”

A week before his side face Arsenal at Wembley, everything went right for him and City. Three points were secured in pursuit of a Champions League place, three goals were scored, a clean sheet was preserved.

Here is how pleasing this trip to the south coast was for the Spaniard: his goalkeeper actually pulled off a save. Yes, for the first time since Jan 2, Claudio Bravo successfully managed to get in the way of a goal-bound effort, throwing himself at a header from Maya Yashida and falling to the turf, the ball grasped to his chest. “Bravo, Bravo” sang the visiting supporters, jovially aware of the significance of the moment.

Brisk, efficient, clever as they were, what will have pleased the City manager all the more was the industry with which his team went about their task. Effort was everywhere on display. Not least from Sergio Agüero. Statistically this is the brilliant Argentine’s worst ever Premier League season. Statistics, though, are relative things: he had scored 10 goals in 10 games in all competitions before this. And boy was he busy here, determined to help City improve on their record of only one win from their last five visits to St Mary’s. He had volleyed the ball wide from Gaël Clichy’s swerving cross, hit a shot past the post after Kevin De Bruyne found him in space, then misdirected a sledgehammer drive from the edge of the area all within the first eight minutes.

But City’s early failure to capitalise on superior possession seemed to inspire their hosts. Brilliant work by Nathan Redmond and Manolo Gabbiadini created an opening for Dusan Tadic, alone and unmarked on the edge of the City box. His shot, however, was ballooned well over the bar. Which must have frustrated his manager Claude Puel, watching from his technical area.

Just put it somewhere near the City goal would have been the lament. After all, that is all you generally need to do when Bravo is playing: the City goalkeeper had arrivet McNeil. The 19-year-old broke into the first-team last season, making 21 Premier League appearances and scoring three times.Dyche believes McNeil will one day move to an elite club, and praised the player’s attitude.“He remains very humble, he remd on the south coast with the unenviable record of conceding goals from the last seven shots on target he had faced.

But there were few of such things here: Southampton rarely came close to testing him. And the reason for that was largely the identity of the man playing in front of Bravo. Vincent Kompany, after a wretched, injury-plagued four months, was back. His first intervention – cool, calm and perfectly executed – spoke volumes for what his absence has meant.

“We miss him a lot,” admitted Guardiola.

“He’s a real defender. No doubt about that. We are so happy he is coming back and hopefully we can keep care of him for the rest of the season.”

It was not just the skipper’s tackles and organisational nous that stood out. It was from his boot that many a City attack began.

One burst started by him concluded with Leroy Sané darting into the area. As the quicksilver forward approached the Southampton goal, from the stands it appeared Fraser Forster had clipped his ankle rather than the ball as he dived at his feet. The referee was not interested, however, preferring to award City a corner.

“I thought it was a penalty,” said Guardiola. “But Sané tells me it was not a penalty. He is a German, so I believe him.”

Not that it mattered. City, in total control of possession, continued to surge forward. And after 55 minutes the effervescent Agüero was fouled on the edge of the area. When De Bruyne’s smart free kick was cleared, the ball fell to Jesús Navas, midway inside the Southampton half. His excellent shot, seemingly destined for the back of the net, was saved at full length by Forster. From the resulting corner, who else but Kompany came barrelling in to rise above Ryan Betrand and power a header past the keeper. It was his first goal since August 2015. No wonder he celebrated with such vigour in front of the ecstatic City fans.

To the home supporters’ disappointment, Puel responded by substituting the local hero Gabbiadini. In truth, the Italian who has made such an impression since his arrival in January, did not look fully up to speed after his injury lay-off. Shane Long replaced him, and was soon involved in a fifty-fifty tussle with Kompany. As the entire visiting section held its breath, it was the Belgian who emerged unscathed from the fray, while a hobbling Long was substituted himself.

Here was concrete proof that everything was going City’s way. And as Southampton pushed for an equaliser, they left themselves exposed to the visitors’ rocket-fuelled pace on the break. They were duly punished when De Bruyne accelerated forward and pl to land a bumper boot deal. The Sun says Maguire, the world’s most expensive defender, has NO footwear deal despite his £85million move to Manchester United. But Nike, Adidas, Puma and Under Armour want him on a long-term contract worth £700,000-a-sayed in Sané, whose sharp finish left Forster marooned. Agüero then got his just reward for his industry – not to mention his eleventh goal in eleven matches – when he met De Bruyne’s adroitly chipped cross for the third.

Now come Arsenal. And after that, the Manchester derby. City’s form – and their skipper – have returned at precisely the right star, who is currently participating in the UEFA Nations League Finals with his country, is a wanted man.Fernandes is valued at roughly £71million by his club, with City and United bought thought to have an interest. However, A Bola suggest that Cittime.

Aguero off, Iheanacho on. This game is dead though so I can’t see him adding to his already impressive goalscoring record.

A perfect counter-attack! City win the ball, hit one touch passes, De Bruyne moves in behind and is clean through, then spots Sane for the finish.

And just look at how attacking City’s shape has been all match:

Southampton are now starting to press high up the pitch. Balls into the box are being aimed at Bravo… they’ve spotted a weakness.

That’s Kompany’s goal. Meanwhile, City have been piling on the pressure. Aguero goes close and catches Forster at the near post, Silva can’t convert from the loose ball.

It’s Kompany! Superb header from a well timed run! City draw first blood and it’s from a corner.

AND SANE IS THROUGH ON GOAL NOW! The keeper comes out, Sane drops the shoulder, goes around him and…. goes down! Is that a penalty?

The referee says no but the replay says yes! Toure heads over at the back post from the corner.

Graham Poll says: "Clear penalty, Forster doesn’t get any of the ball. Definite penalty but no card."

More danger for City and Bravo is directly involved! The keeper comes way off his line to deal with crosses into the box, palms one away and is then fortunate his defenders block the follow up shot.

What is it with City controlling games before conceding?

And another chance for Aguero! He turns Stephens in the box and shoots low to the back post… dragging his shot just wide!

"He was perfect in Stamford Bridge and no physical problems and it was so demanding for him and he’s ready to play. John Stones is injured, we’ll know what it is in next few days.

"Every day, every game decide what I see. I’m not a manager who blame the reasons why we have success on different situations. We talk always what we can do to improve, I try to be a good human being Monday to Saturday but Sunday I am a football manager."

Bravo, Clichy, Kompany (c), Otamendi, Fernandinho, Toure, Sane, Silva, De Bruyne, Navas, Aguero

What is the team news?

The returns of Manolo Gabbiadini and Steven Davis mean Southampton have a near fully-fit squad for Saturday’s Premier League visit of Manchester City.

Manager Claude Puel is yet to decide whether either will start, but their presence in his squad leaves Charlie Austin – close to returning from an injured shoulder – and Virgil van Dijk, who has an injured foot, as his only major absentees.

Beyond those two, only Matt Targett and Alex McCarthy are unavailable due to to hamstring injuries.

Team from: Forster, Taylor, Cedric, Martina, Pied, Yoshida, Stephens, Caceres, Bertrand, McQueen, Romeu, Hojbjerg, Davis, Clasie, Ward-Prowse, Tadic, Boufal, Redmond, Rodriguez, Long, Gabbiadini.

Pep Guardiola is waiting on fitness updates on two of his centre-backs. Their win over Hull last weekend was achieved with John Stones and Aleks Kolarov as the central pairing. Stones has become a key player for City in recent weeks and Kolarov took his place alongside the England man with Vincent Kompany and Nicolas Otamendi not fit enough to be named in the XI.

Kompany, who turned 31 earlier this week, needs to prove he can put his injury woes behind him and still be a valued member of the squad.

Any interesting match stats?

How are the below for you…

City have only picked up eight points out of a possible 18 in past six games.Saints full-back Jeremy Pied is fit after seven months out injured.City striker Aguero has scored 10 goals in 10 games.Southampton centre-back pairing of Yoshida and Stephens conceded 10 goals in eight league games they have played together.

What are they saying?

"We know the next game against Manchester City is a strong challenge, a great team, but it’s better to play against Manchester City after two wins, as it gives us confidence.

"We play at home and, with the support of the fans, we can do fantastic work against them."

"I want to win trophies. I hope we can lift something for us and the fans this year.

"All this year, we’ve been fighting for something… The FA Cup is a big target for us this year. We’re looking forward to it.

"I’m the type of player that always wants to win. In football, sometimes you can lose or draw. We want to always be at the top but we want to keep on going… We play Southampton and we’ll try and win that game."

What are the odds?

Man City 8/11

Southampton 4/1

Draw 13/5

What’s our prediction?

Southampton are unbeaten in three winning their last two matches against West Brom and Crystal Palace while Manchester City have had a sticky spell recently.

City need to win to enhance their hopes of a top-four finish but Puel’s men will not be a pushover. We’re going for a 2-2 draw here.

Liverpool 2 West Ham 2: Divock Origi salvages point for hosts after Loris Karius blunder further dents title challenge

content_img

data-js=”article-body” data-insert-mobile-adslot>

Re-watch the last six goals they have conceded and ask how many were preventable? At least three. Probably four.

Karius needed a performance to back up . Instead he was again unimpressive, failing to shove away Dmitri Payet’s 28th-minute free-kick. He can spend the week finding another former Manchester United player working in the media to respond to if it makes him feel better, but it does not alter that .

He may get better. Longer term, he could become the most assured Liverpool keeper since Clemence. But Liverpool are a side still capable of winning the title this year, so spare us the high-ground lectures against those justifiably infuriated that such an obvious flaw is undermining their latest challenge.

It was more exasperating for the Kop because, just as at Bournemouth, they had watched their side start as if they were in the mood for a rampage.

Adam Lallana was able to return to the starting line-up for the first time since being injured playing for England against Spain. He immediately demonstrated what Liverpool have lacked in his absence, controlling exquisitely before drilling the home side ahead on five minutes after Sadio Mané’s cross and some inadequate defending.

After West Ham’s mauling by Arsenal a week ago, Bilic must have feared the worst. Instead, his clever use of Michail Antonio as a striker in the first half bothered Dejan Lovren and, to a lesser extent, Joel Matip on the counter-attacks. There was an early warning when he scurried clear on eight minutes, his shot pushed over by Karius prior to the goalkeeper’s travails from Payet’s set-piece.

There was more fortune about West Ham’s second six minutes before the interval. Havard Nordtveit’s long ball was inadvertently flicked on by Jordan Henderson; it wrong-footed Matip who, that aside, was outstanding. In the clear, Antonio directed the ball beyond Karius, who was again unimposing.

But Randolph returned the favour three minutes into the second half, dropping Mané’s cross to enable Divock Origi to tap in. The festive gift exchanges ended there with the visitors defending more resolutely the longer the game progressed.

Not for the first time, a fixture list many presumed had Bilic staring into the abyss may have led to his salvation, a point at Old Trafford and Anfield makes that 5-1 humiliation against Arsenal an oddity.

“We showed great reaction after the goal,” said Bilic, who as a former Besiktas coach dedicated the point to victims of Saturday’s terrorist attack in Turkey. “It’s a really great point for us before a crucial week.”

For Klopp there is worrying momentum to reverse. Top of the league before the last international break, Liverpool now find themselves hanging onto the coat-tails of Chelsea heading into the festive period. The loss of er Joe Allen. The veteran central midfielder is wanted by several Premier League clubs. But the Championship side have put a £15 million price tag on his head, per the Daily Mail. The source claims that West Ham are only willing to pay around £8 milliPhilippe Coutinho is not helping, and the squad suddenly looks much thinner at the busiest, tiring stage. He has a bench full of teenagers and needs the senior men to return.

“It is difficult to stay in the title race with ,” said Klopp. “This is the moment to collect as many points as possible. It’s a negative we didn’t win but it is still a point. We are still on a very good way. We are third. Come on – a lot of teams should feel worse.”

Bilic left Merseyside feeling the vote of confidence in him expressed by the West Ham board had gone some way to being validated.

We must wait a while longer for Karius to demonstrate the show of faith in his skills from Klopp will be similarly rewarded.

“The criticism was very harsh,” said Klopp. “When we analysed the [Bournemouth] game I found eight players who could have defended the goal before Loris was involved. Even the best goalkeepers in the world still make mistakes.” Or as Pepe Reina, one of Karius’ predecessors, put it earlier this week: “It’s a team that also at times has to do better for the goalkeeper.”

The Hammers beat Man City, Liverpool and Arsenal on their travels last season, which perhaps inflated their end of season points total to put them in a false position. They’ve found things tough going this term.

Of players to have scored 40+ Premier League goals, only Duncan Ferguson, Tim Cahill, Kenwyne Jones and John Terry have scored a higher proportion with their head. The previous three Premier League games to involve Liverpool and to be played on a Sunday this season have all produced seven goals (21 in total).

What form are the two teams in?

Liverpool were flying until last week’s , having not lost in their previous 11 league matches. Jurgen Klopp’s side are third heading into the weekend’s matches, four points behind leaders Chelsea and a point second-placed behind Arsenal.

To use the modern footballing vernacular West Ham are in a very bad moment. They were dreadful in , and are winless in their last five league matches (D2,L3). Going into the weekend’s matches, Slaven Bilic’s side are 17th, just a point above the relegation zone.

What have the managers been saying?

"I have no idea when he will be back," said Klopp.

"Until now he didn’t train. He wasn’t 100 per cent yesterday but he will be on the pitch today but that means starting the work. He won’t be with the team."

"That is the life of football. You cannot force things like this.

"The main reason why we have lost our intensity is that we have had so many injuries, all in a small space of time.

"Then, because we had three games in a week, we had to balance things, not walk on eggshells exactly, but to be careful in training.travel to Italy for their Europa League clash at Inter Milan.Italy is in a state of lockdown and no football is allowed to be played in the country until April, other than European competitions, because of the spread of coronavirus.Torres came out on

"I would like to clarify this now. I was not criticising my staff. My reason was not to moan because we had lost to Arsenal but to provoke a reaction so we can get back that intensity.

"We have had a good few days’ training but, rather, I want and expect to see a good reaction in the long term.

"The bottom line is yes, it is my job to get the best out of my players – and I said just that, a few times, straight after the Arsenal match. I am not in the blame game because that achieves nothing."

What are the odds?

Liverpool – 3/10

West Ham – 10/1

Draw – 5/1

What’s our prediction?

Liverpool to win 3-2.

Simon Mignolet: I will not stay as Liverpool’s No 2

“So I’ll work hard and I’ll never give up – giving up is not what I want to do. I see it as a challenge that I can overcome. So hopefully it will be a fair challenge based on performances put in on the pitch.” When Karius was signed, for £5 million from German club Mainz, Klopp said he “did not have a No 1” goalkeeper but before the Spurs tie, Mignolet’lix Passlack this summer.Bild says Passlack has been released by the German club. The 21-year-old spent this season on loan at Norwich but found it hard to displace Max Aarons in the starting line-up.However, the Norwich Evening News says manager Danis first appearance since Sept 16, the manager stated there was now a pecking order: “We have a No1 and that is Loris Karius. That’s the situation. I cannot leave them in doubt.”

“I don’t want to think about that. It’s not in my character,” Mignolet slayers are bouncing after a positive run of results.Newcastle travel to Villa Park in the Monday Night Football clash on Sky Sports and Bruce has said his players are in confident mood after two successive Premier League wins.”The difference in a couaid. “I will always support the team and the club.  “Hopefully I can get my chance again to show what I can do. I am happy with my performance against Tottenham.

Asked whether he had to keep showing his ‘worth’, Mignolet said: “Yes, exactly and I don’t want that to take long. I don’t really think about time or anything like this. I just stay in the moment and what happens today. The only thing I can then do is do what I’ve done today.”

The goalkeeper added: “You are always happy to play a game. That’s what you want to do week in, week out. I will keep fighting to get my place back….To be honest, the only thing I can do is work hard, keep my head down.”

Eric Dier, the one Spurs player to to start the League Cup tie who had played in the league last weekend, said it was a test of the team’s “attitude” as to how they bounce back after a first domestic loss of the season.

Dier, who began his career in Portugal, also backed team-mate Vincent Janssen who has yet to score in the league, but has two League Cup penalties, since the striker’s £18 million move from AZ Alkmaar.

“I can speak from experience, when you come from a different country – he’s come from Holland. It’s not easy. People at home may not understand, but he’s come from a different country, a different culture. He moved here by himself. He’s got to get used to a whole new way of training, playing, a whole new way of life. These things take time. It’s only natural he will keep on improving.”

Man City 2 Arsenal 2: Alexis Sanchez on hand to dent City’s Champions League hopes

content_img

data-js=”article-body” data-insert-mobile-arophy.Sarri was pleased with their 1-1 draw at Europa League semifinal at Eintracht Frankfurt in last night’s first-leg.He said: “I want to reach the final against any team, Arsenal or Valencia. It’s exactly the same for me, who we play. I don’t wantdslot>

Boos rang out on Sunday. This is not what Manuel Pellegrini, . This charming man might lose out to Louis van Gaal, who appears to lead a charmed life at United even if his future is under severe doubt. Once again, things fell his way.

Pellegrini joked that he had not arrived at City in a Lamborghini – acknowledging the fans’ song about him – but he will have to leave under cover of the night if the “disaster” (his word) of fans before defeat at Stamford Bridge last night. The former Blues captain was given a hero’s welcome on his reunion with a club he made 717 appearances for and won five Premier League titles with. The Villa assistant coach posted on Instagram on Thurfailing to qualify for the Champions League in the season that they made the semi-finals is confirmed.

Pellegrini and the City players returned to the pitch 15 minutes after the final whistle for a lap of appreciation and stood in the centre circle before a stadium that was near empty, maybe a fifth full at best. It was an uncomfortable moment. Pellegrini looked like he wanted the earth to swallow him up as a video of his time at the club was played on the big screens. He had been given the option of skipping it but chose to go ahead and probably rightly so.

Pellegrini also spoke of three “unforgettable” years but if City are leapfrogged by United, he will have failed despite winning the Premier League in his first campaign and gaining two League Cups. Clubs of City’s resources and ambition cannot accept not being in the Champions League.

“We deserve to be in the Champions League next year,” Pellegrini said afterwards. “We have (been) 37 (league) games in the spot of Champions League and we don’t want to lose that spot. I trust we are going to have our achievement on Sunday.”

City have, indeed, been in the top four all season but can miss out and cannot do a thing to stop that happening. There is a big if, of course. If United triumph away to West Ham United on Tuesday – in what will be an emotional night for the home side in their final match after 112 years at Upton Park – and beat Bournemouth at Old Trafford they will finish ahead of City. Even a draw and a win might do if City fail to beat Swansea City away.

“Things are now out of our hands but we will find out on Tuesday,” Pellegrini said. “We must keep our heads clean and chins up and try to win our last game. In my time here we have improved a lot in the Champions League. Also, for me, it’s been about our style of play. There have been a lot of positive things but we must qualify again for the Champions League.”

One win against the other clubs in the top eight; eighth in the Premier League form table since the Guardiola announcement was made at the beginning of February and the nagging feeling that City are never quite the sum of their parts would argue otherwise and against Pellegrini. In a sense this game summed up his reign, with City dominant at times, swarming over Arsenal but unable to kill them off.

The visitors also had to which throws his involvement in Euro 2016 into doubt. Jack Wilshere came on and was given more minutes to prove his fitness for England’s squad, but by then goals had been traded in a blistering opening 10 minutes.

Arsène  Wenger had declared that attack was the best form of defence for both sides – partly an admission that they are both shaky at the back – and so it proved.

City struck when Jesus Navas chipped the ball into the penalty area, Fernandinho headed it back into Sergio Agüero’s path and, with Mohamed Elneny uncertain, the striker drove the ball low inside the post to score for his sixth successive league match.

By contrast Olivier Giroud had gone 15 league games without a goal but he was presented with one as Eliaquim Mangala neglected to mark him at a corner and he planted his header beyond Joe Hart. Even that corner had been a calamity – conceded by Gaël Clichy as he tried to head the ball back to Hart, only for it to trickle just past a post.

Arsenal’s defensive vulnerabted midfielder Sean Longstaff has been left hanging by Manchester United vice-chairman Ed Woodward. The London Evening Standard says the frustration over the time taken to conclude transfers has been felt among targets, as well as fans. United have soility was exposed again early in the second half when Kevin De Bruyne won possession on halfway ahead of Nacho Monreal and drove forward. Challenges melted ahead of him, the space opened up and he struck a low shot that Petr Cech, maybe unsighted, was slow to react to.

Kelechi Iheanacho squandered a chance to wrap the game up and it proved pivotal when, this time, City backed off and Alexis Sánchez made his way forward. Mangala was again caught out and Giroud cleverly played the ball back to Sánchez, who steered his shot home from the edge of the area.

Agüero went close with a volley after a clever one-two with De Bruyne, then substitute Wilfried Bony rattled the bar with a hooked volley.

“Winning the three points [would have been] a good way to say goodbye,” Pellegrini said.

Instead it could be an uncomfortable farewell.

Booze, transfers among eight discussion points at the 2019 SEC spring meetings

content_img

On a spit of white sand beach, the SEC will decide the current and future state of the league. In other words, it’s time for the annual spring meetings in Destin, Florida.

The league conducts these meetings at resort on the Florida Panhandle with a view of the Gulf of Mexico. Those meetings begin formally on Tuesday with an ocean breeze and a full agenda. Focus, boys and girls, paradise can wait until the end of business hours.

Here are eight things you should keep an eye on as the SEC spring meetings go down this week in Destin.

Hard liners gasped a little when the NCAA, two weeks ago, . The moving target that is amateurism will be a key discussion point in Destin. The basic argument is whether student-athletes — like their Olympic counterparts — can profit from their basic sense of self.

The Olympics decided 30 years ago that its athletes could still be considered amateurs despite allowing them to do commercials. Those ratings-grabbing figure skaters, gymnasts and skiers didn’t turn off a soul because they appeared in an airline commercial.

What does that look like in the college space? Think of Tua Tagovailoa doing a local car commercial or DeAndre Swift getting a little somethin’, somethin’ for his autograph. You’d better believe the SEC will begin significant discussions on what it all means. This is a league that lost its collective mind in 2015 when cost of attendance was implemented. Back then, the concern was, God forbid, Auburn players get $100 more per month than their Alabama counterparts — or vice versa.

will no doubt hang over the meetings. Bramblett and his wife were killed in a car accident over the weekend, leaving a school and a conference in mourning. Bramblett had been the football “Voice of the Tigers” since 2003. He leaves behind two wonderful children, Shelby and Joshua. There have been many great voices of SEC football. Their shared contribution is to those who have no other way to follow their teams except through those unique voices. We should never forget Bramblett’s famous call of the Pick Six.

The SEC West is apparently the place to be for administrators, too. Scott Woodward and Ross Bjork will be at their first SEC meetings since changing jobs within the West Division. Woodward, a New Orleans native, came “home” to LSU from Texas A&M. On Friday, Bjork left Ole Miss — where he had been for eight years — to take the opening at TAMU. For those of you scoring at home, that leaves the latest SEC West opening at Ole Miss.

If it’s all about money — and frequently it is all about money — the SEC has some work to do. The Big Ten earlier this month announced a 48 percent increase in revenue, making the Larter City to “achieve something fantastic”.The Foxes, who were surprise champions under Claudio Ranieri in 2015-16, are third with Brendan Rodgers in charge.”Leicester have a spine of the team that is experienced – in Jonny Evans, Jamie Vardy and Kaspge 14 the richest conference in history — by far. This means a lot to the SEC, if only from a pride standpoint. The two leagues have separated themselves from the rest of college sports in terms of money … and championships. The leagues have combined for 10 of the last 13 football national titles. (OK, the SEC has nine of those.)

It was 10 years ago that Nick Saban won his first national championship at Alabama. That started a run of five titles in a decade. Is 2019, will it be a continuation of the same, or was the Clemson game a sign of things to come?

Among coaches, the 7-month-old . It isn’t going away, but that won’t stop the league’s coaches from weighing in. A couple of years ago, anticipating more transfer freedom, Saban said, “Am I going to have to change the way I coach?” The answer is the same for all coaches: Yeah, maybe. At least check 106 SEC football players had put their name in the portal. That’s an average of more than 7.5 per school.

Schools long ago began serving alcohol at sporting events nationwide. The total now stands at approximately 55 FBS schools that serve alcohol at games. The SEC remains an outlier. It is the only major conference that has a policy against alcohol sales to the general public. Social mores have loosened. The NCAA now allows drinkage at its championship events. The SEC — in the heart of the Bible Belt — has been slow to change, but truths have emerged.

Alcohol is a significant revenue source that can be controlled. Former West Virginia AD Oliver Luck proved it when he argued that limiting beer and wine inside the stadium (two drinks per visit) were better than fans binge-drinking at halftime. The West Virginia model is 8 years old. (Security officials actually used to have a “Code Vomit” to identify out-of-control drinking in the stands before it was regulated.)  The SEC’s no-booze policy dates back to at least 1978, according to Sports Illustrated. There will be significant discussion this week in Destin about opening up the spigots. Time for a toast?

, the SEC continued its image makeover. If nothinproblems between Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann. It’s been suggested Messi doesn’t get along with the arrival from Atletico Madrid. But Pique says: “Leo and Grizzi get along well, it’s the same for Dembélé or before with Pedro… “It’s true that g else, the league will celebrate its hoops  success in Destin. Having one-quarter of the Sweet 16 hadn’t happened in the SEC in 22 years. Auburn made a Cinderella run to the Final Four.

The general upgrade in basketball fortunes means more pressure to win. Six of the 14 SEC schools have changed coaches in the last two seasons — four in the last couple of months. Alabama snagged up-and-comer Nate Oates from Buffalo. Veteran (and Nevada) coach Eric Musselman will make his Power Five debut at Arkansas. Buzz Williams left Virginia Tech for Texas A&M. Jerry Stackhouse takes over at Vanderbilt after the surprising firing of Bryce Drew.

That’s not counting Will Wade, wh goalkeeper David Seaman is backing Nice coach Patrick Vieira for the Gunners job.Arsenal are starting their search for a new manager for only the second time in 23 years after sacking Unai Emery. And ex-Gunners captain Vieira, now manager of Nice, coo snagged an SEC title (and lots of FBI attention) in his second year at LSU. Kentucky remains the team to beat, but it definitely has some competition.

Report: Mark Helfrich to be named Oregon coach if Chip Kelly leaves

content_img

(US Presswire)

Our own Dennis Dodd  in discussing the matter Wednesday, but according to  a source has confirmed that offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich will replace head coach Chip Kelly if Kelly decides to jump to an job.

From Dodd’s column:

Oregon officials are said to be more than comfortable with the personable 39-year-old takson will not play for Sheffield United against Manchester United on Saturday. The United loanee does not have the relevant clearance to play in the game, as Premier League rules forbid loan players from playing their parent clubs.Henderson is one of ting over should Kelly leave. While he doesn’t call plays, Helfrich has been Kesays Arsenal are confident of completing a loan deal for Ceballos – and beating Tottenham to a second summer signing.Gunners boss Unai Emery has targeted Ceballos to join Arsenal on a one-year loan deal to bolster his squad and become a much-needed ally’s right-hand man offensively, intimately involved with the game plan. The former Southern Oregon quarterback started as an Oregon grad assistant 15 years ago. He rose to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Dan Hawkins at Colorado (2006-08) before coming to the Ducks.

And from USA Today’s source:

Oregon officials anticipate Kelly, who flirted heavily with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers almost a year ago, will move to the NFL someday — and most likely very soon.

If so, Oregon would move quickly to replace him, and would stay in-house. Boise State coach Chris Petersen, who had long been linked in speculation to the Oregon job if it ever opened, would not be a candidate, the person said.

“Conceptually, it’s about continuity,” the person said, adding that Helfrich could be named head coach within 72 hours of Kelly’s departure.

Oregon’ve come over the last decade.Guardiola insists pursuing the Champions League this season shouldn’t be an all-or-nothing target. He said, “It was a club that was more than a decade ago trying to stay in the Premier League, the jump has meant winning f doesn’t want to mess with success. It wants to maintain its spread offensive scheme and there’s probably no better person to run it than Helfrich, who would be the third consecutive Ducks offensive coordinator to be elevated to the head coaching position (Mike Bellotti was promoted to replace Rich Brooks in 1995 and Kelly was promoted to replace Bellotti in 2009).

Indiana QB Tre Roberson learning when to stay or go

content_img

Indiana coach Kevin Wilson has a clear message for quarterback : we are only as good as you play.

“The conversation I’ve had with quarterback is we’re not going to be a good team in the Big Ten with average quarterback play, that is a fact,” he said. “We better be the better quarterbacks in the league and we better play at a high end if we expect to win and start playing quality Big Ten football.”

And the sophomore signal caller has flashed an ability to play at an elite level.

Roberson appeared in nine games last season, completing 57 percent of his passes for 937 yards with three touchdowns against six interceptions while rushing for 426 yards with two touchdowns on 109 carries. Still, it wasn’t enough to spark an offense last year that ranked 101st naia Dortmund, refused to say he would directly replace Eden Hazard, who joined Real Madrid this summer. But the 20-year-old thinks he has the abilities to excel at Stamford Bridge.”I think I have a lot of speed and creativity that I can bring to the gationally in scoring (21.4 ppg), 80th in passing (199.4 ypg) and 53rd in rushing (161 ypg).

The key to improving on those numbers, according to Roberson, is improving his completion percentage by getting better at reading defenses before the snap.

“This year, I’m seeing when safeties are rotating or the coverage they might be,” Roberson told the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette. he will find solutions to the team’s problems in the next few days. The Toffees face one of the most important games of their season – a Merseyside derby against Liverpool on Wednesday.Silva knows that a poor result and performance against their fier“Or I’m reading linebackers or reading the keys I’m supposed to be reading.”

Wilson agrees with his budding star, adding Roberson also must get used to hanging in the pocket and not taking off as soon as he feels the rush. Some of the biggest pass plays in a game come from a signal caller eluding the rush but remaining composed instead of tucking the ball and trying to create on his own.

“We need (Roberson) to sit in the pocket and process cover-3, cover-2 and where does the ball need to go?” Wilson told the Indianapolis Star. “We just need to spend a little more time with that. Sometimes he’s going to be in the pocket and it’s going to break down and he’s going to have to run. So I’m not saying don’t run. I’m just trying to help him with making the right decisions.”

If Roberson can make the leap, the have a chance to play in a bowl game for just the second time since 1993. And the schedule sets up nicely. The non-conference slate of Indiana State, Massachusetts, Ball State and Navy are all very winnable. After that, the team simply needs to record two Big Ten victories to become eligible for the postseason.

“Tre has developed,” Indiana assistant offensive coordinator Kevin Johns told The Journal Gazette. “I think ever Aaron Wan-Bissaka is at Carrington today as Manchester United prepare to announce his £50m transfer.Wan-Bissaka, 21, has agreed a six-year deal with the Red Devils, worth £80,000-a-week and becomes United’s fifth-most expensive signing in historeryone is going to see a different Tre Roberson this fall than what they did last fall.”

Mike Mularkey’s plan for Titans offense is called ‘exotic smashmouth’

content_img

When the selected with the No. 2 overall pick in last year’s draft, the most-asked question in Nashville peo Icardi for defeat to Juventus.Wanda, who also acts as Icardi’s agent, helped move the striker to PSG.“We watcas declared defeat to Bayern Munich as “embarrassing”.Bayern thrashed their Champions League opponents 7-2 in London last night.“This is very painful. All negative words go through my mind now. It’s embarrassing,” said Vertonghen. “Bayern was very hed Inter-Juventus, of course,” Wanda told Tiki Taka.“In the first half, it seemed that Inter needed to do more.“He didn’t miss the grtained to Mariota’s ability to transition to an offense after blossoming in Oregon’s system. Mariota answered that question, compiling a passer rating of 91.5 in his rookie season, proving that he can operate within the pocket, and making it clear that the entire premise of the question was overblown in the first place.

Marcus Mariota is just a product of Tennessee’s system.

— Sean Wagnered with his first months at Real Betis. The 26-year-old joined Los Verdiblancos from Lyon, having previously been linked with a wide range of top European clubs.”I can understand that my decision to come to Seville was difficult to understand when you-McGough (@seanjwagner)

But now, one year after those college system questions were raised, a similar question needs an answer: Can Mariota effectively transition to the “exotic smashmouth” offense?

Because that’s what new head coach Mike Mularkey, who served as the interim coach for a portion of last season, is apparently bringing to Tennessee.

Mularkey: Says his old offensive system in Pitt, which he hopes to replicate, was known as “exotic smashmouth.”

— John Glennon (@glennonsports)

“(Opponents) are going to know we are going to be very hard to defend, and it is going to be a physical football game,” Mularkey said, . “When it is all said and done they are going to know they have been in a fight.”

Mularkey, who served as the ‘ offensive coordinator from 2001 until 2003, saw tremendous success in his first two seasons. In 2001, the Steelers offense finished third in yards and seventh in scoring. They followed that up by ranking fifth in yards and eighth in scoring the following season. Both of those teams relied heavily on the ground game, finishing near the top of the league in rushing.

Last season, the Titans ranked 25th in rushing yards, so that might need to be adjusted this offseason. One of those adjustments relates directly to Mariota, .

In Mariota’s rookie season, he accumulated just 34 carries, 252 yards, and two scores. In 2001, Steelers quarterback Kordell Stewart ran the ball 96 times, picked up 537 yards, and scored five touchdowns.

Hopefully, for the Titans’ sake, the Mariota-Stewart comparisons end there.
