Bills Today: Whaley to spearhead coaching search

content_img

Here’s the Bills news of note for Dec. 28th.

With Rex Ryan relieved of his coaching duties Tuesday, the search for a new head coach will begin in earnest by the Bills. The team confirmed that GM Doug Whaley will head up the process.

The Bills general manager was part of the process two years ago and made his recommendations, but indication now is Whaley will take a lead role in the search for a new head coach.

He could begin to put out requests to interview coaching candidates as soon as the end of the week.

Interim head coach ays Real Betis will reject any offer from Liverpool for Firpo this summer.Firpo is believed to be firmly in the plans of coach Rubi ahead of the new campaign with the 22-year-old impressing last term.Liverpool, therefore, would need to pay the £45m Anthony Lynn is expected to be a consideration.

Buffalo’s league-leading rushing attack made a sizable climb up the franchise’s single-season rushing list in Week 16. Entering last Saturday’s game the 2016 Bills ranked 10th in team history in rushing yards with 2,290. After their 272-yard rushing performance they’ve vaulted themselves into the top 5.

“We kind of did what we wanted moving the ball,” said LeSean McCoy, who had his seventh 100-yard rushing day. “Running the ball, running the ball, taking shots. oach Florian k to his best. The Belgian has been in imperious form in recent weeks, with his man-of-the-match displays against Arsenal and Leicester vital in securing maximum points from two tough games. It’s seen a surge of praise for the midfielder, something EdeKohfeldt admits their interest in Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic is over. The Serb chose to sign on-loan with Hertha Berlin this summer ahead of Werder. And Kohfeldt concedes: “You cannot rule out anything, but that would be pure speculThe way that we’re built. That’s how we’re built. We run the ball and then take some shots.”

Buffalo now has 2,562 rushing yards on the season, which ranks as the fourth-best single season rushing with a game to play. They’re expected to pass the 1976 Bills (2,566) in the season finale against the Jets sitting just four yards behind them.

That figures to be where Buffalo’s 2016 run game will finish in club annals knowing they would need more than 400 yards on the ground to even surpass the 1975 Bills (2,974) who hold the number two spot all-time.

The 2016 Bills are however, expected to finish as the club’s all-time single-season leader in yards per carry average. They currently sit in the top spot at 5.52 yards per carry. It’s almost a half yard better than the 1973 Bills.

All season long the Bills offense has been experts when it comes to ball security. Last Saturday marked the eighth time this season they have not committed a turnover. It extended a new Bills single-season mark (previous mark was six games without turnover in 2015).

Buffalo has just nine turnovers through 15 games. That ties the NFL record low set by New England in the 2010 season.

If the Bills go without a giveaway against the Jets on Sunday it would set a new NFL record for fewest turnovers in a season. Buffalo’s previous record low was 19 last season.

The NFL record low is 10 originally set by the 2010 Patriots and matched by the 2011 San Francisco 49ers.

How serious is the Sanchez case?

On the face of it, any missed test looks to have been the result of an embarrassing cock-up by Arsenal. Sources say neither they nor Sanchez have any previous strikes against their names. Pronounced (DAY-lay-on), Farr was most recently with the after the team signed him August 10 due to a rash of injuries at the position on their roster. The 6’5″ 256-pound tight end however, did not make the team’s final cut and was released last weekend.

He’s considered more of a receiving tight end that offers good speed and hands. Farr also displays good effort as a blocker.

Cover 3: Get to know some of the big name coordinators primed for top coaching jobs

content_img

This week’s Cover 3 spans all things college football digs into, including the coordinators that are most appealing as the coaching carousel picks up steam, the puzzling trend going on at Texas and the college football’s big loss over the weekend that few noticed.

1. The next coaches among coordinators

As the coaching carousel begins to spin in earnest, the obvious names that will be tossed around as candidates for the big jobs are going to be sitting Power Five head coaches or up-and-comers from the Group of Five ranks. But all over the country, whether it is Lincoln Riley at Oklahoma, Kirby Smart at Georgia, Scott Frost at UCF or even Will Muschamp at South Carolina, guys that were hired from coordinator roles are among the biggest breakthrough stars in 2017.

With a cycle approaching that features a relatively limited inventory of rising Group of Five coaches, as well as realistic scenarios that see jobs like UCLA, Arkansas, Nebraska and Texas A&M joining current openings at Florida, Tennessee and Ole Miss, it’s time to get to know some of the nation’s best coaching candidates from the coordinator ranks.

Ready for big timeJoe Moorhead, Penn State offensive coordinator

He has head coaching experience. He took a Fordham team that was 1-10 before his arrival to 12-2 in his second year and he ended his four-year tenure with three straight FCS playoff performances. Moorhead has turned Penn State’s offense from listless to one of the most explosive in and he’s only 44, just two years older than the heavily coveted Scott Frost.

Brent Venables, Clemson defensive coordinator

One of the nation’s highest paid coordinators, Venables only seems interested in leaving for the perfect fit. He’s an energetic coach, a dogged recruiter and has reloaded to produce one of the nation’s best defenses regularly despite hemorrhaging talent every spring.

Greg Schiano, Ohio State defensive coordinator

This is the guy that had Rutgers ranked seventh in the nation at one point. His struggles as the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have overshadowed what was a remarkable run in Piscataway, New Jersey.

On the cuspJeremy Pruitt, Alabama defensive coordinator

One of the best recruiters in the country, Pruitt has been a defensive coordinator for three years and has appeared in two national title games during that time, winning one. He’s also learned from the best, coaching under Nick Saban, Mark Richt and Jimbo Fisher.

Jonathan Smith, Washington offensive coordinator

A mainstay on Chris Petersen’s staff since 2012, Smith played at Oregon State, was a graduate assistant at Oregon State and has developed the kind of offensive resume that could make him a very attractive candidate in Corvallis.

Mike Bloomgren, Stanford offensive coordinator

Bloomgren has regularly produced some of college football’s best offensive lines at Stanford and he has proven that he can recruit with anyone in the country as well. Given Stanford’s national approach to recruiting and his background (born and raised in Tallahassee, graduate assistant at Alabama), Bloomgren would be adaptable in any region.

Manny Diaz, Miami defensive coordinator

A successful defensive coordinator at just about every stop in his career, Diaz has taken some real ownership of the Miami resurgence and as the son of the former mayor of Miami, he’s got leadership in his blood.

Mike Yurcich, Oklahoma State offensive coordinator

Mike Gundy’s former offensive coordinators include successful head coaches like Larry Fedora, Dana Holgorsen and Todd Monken. Yurcich is putting up numbers that would make even that group blush.

Tee Martin, USC offensive coordinator

He’s already proven himself as one of the best recruiters in college football and Martin has taken well to the coordinator role. With a national championship at Tennessee, roots in Alabama and success out west, his profile is compelling on a number of fronts.

2. The Texas curse

Watching Diaz put together one of the best defenses in college football down at Miami isn’t surprising to anyone that has followed his career — unless perhaps you’re a Texas fan. Diaz was in Austin as the decline of the Longhorns kicked into gear. He took over the No. 9 defense in the country in yards per play allowed and in his three years there, Diaz’s defenses were ranked No. 9, No. 85 and No. 62 in the same category.

The tumble for a defense that had been No. 1 in the country only two years before he arrived made Diaz’s successful career prior at Middle Tennessee and Mississippi State look like false positives. Since his departure, it’s become clear that part of the support team of Barcelona youngster Ansu Fati.Marca says at the end of last season, Fati had to renew his contract but talks hit a brick wall. It was then the player’s father who contacted Rodrigo Messi, from which point forward he lookeit was Texas that was the fallacy. Diaz’s defenses at Louisiana Tech, Mississippi State and Miami in next three seasons all improved dramatically under his watch.

Remarkably, Diaz isn’t alone. He was just the first of a lengthening line of bright young coaches who are really good at things that translate everywhere except in Austin. Charlie Strong came to Texas with the chops to fix a floundering defense and he did … for one year. In the next two bowl-less seasons, Strong’s defenses looked awful and incompetent. Yet, in his new job at USF, Strong is once again fielding one of the best defensive units in the country.

Tom Herman isn’t immune from the curse either. He’s got Texas looking competitive in a tough Big 12 and is still in danger of missing a bowl game for the third straight season because his offense is failing him. His offensive acumen has been undeniable at every stop in his career until now, and he has the job largely because of what his offenses did at both Ohio State and Houston.

So what’s missing? For Diaz, perhaps it was just a maield for last night’s Champions League defeat at Atletico Madrid.Liverpool lost 1-0 in the Spanish capital on Tuesday night and play the Champions League last-16 second leg next month at Anfield. “Well it was a really frustrating night for Liverpool, tter of time. The year after he left, Texas shot right back up to the top 10 defensively under Strong and perhaps the jump would have been similar under Diaz.

For Strong and Herman, we may be looking at head coaches spread too thin.

In their previous head coaching positions, the demands on the head coach are incomparable to the obligations required at Texas. Strong is afforded much more time to gameplan and prepare at Louisville and USF than he was at Texas. The same can be said for Herman at Houston. Vance Joseph didn’t cut it under Strong and Tim Beck under Herman hasn’t yet proven up to the task.

Herman seems to have the arrow pointed up at Texas and my hunch is that offense gets corrected soon, but the phenomena offers a lesson to some otho Manchester United.United paid £46.5m plus add-ons for Fernandes but Varandas admitted they were nearly forced them to take a lower offer from Tottenham.“At the end of June, we had become aware that we were going to sell Bruno,” he told Record.”Wer schools on the verge of major hires. Florida and Tennessee are schools with rabid fan bases to appease and countless asks of a head coach. In those environments, you’d better be confident not only in the hire, but in the guys coming with him if you want a quick fix.

3. College football took a hit this weekend

Very few casual football fans around the country know the name Tony Perry. He’s not a big money coach or a NFL millionaire, but a lot of big money coaches and NFL millionaires have Tony Perry plugged into their phone. If you plan on recruiting Fresno, California, or if you were a kid trying to get out of Fresno, you needed to know “TP.”

Over the weekend, Perry passed away. He was an assistant coach at Edison High School and he was a mentor to and an advocate for countless football players in the greater Fresno area.

There’s often a stigma attached to guys like Perry. For a lot players, he was the dreaded “third party” that the NCAA works so hard to restrict. But Perry was an example of the positive impact a third party “mentor” can have on a player. He’s often the guy taking prospects to camps or 7-on-7 events in the offseason, living in smelly vans and cheap hotels with a bunch of rowdy teens and pounding the phones to alert college coaches to the kids that deserve an opportunity. If TP called, I’d know that I had better set aside at least 20 minutes of phone time in front of me, hearing about his latest crop.

Guys that Perry touched include Miami Dolphins safety T.J. McDonald, Pittsburgh Steelers safety Robert Golden, Utah true freshman starting corner Jaylon Johnson and Oklahoma linebacker Caleb Kelly.

This is no broad defense of third-party actors in the college football recruiting process. But it’s a defense of the good ones. Tony Perry was a good one and for a lot of guys that needed him, Tony Perry was there. College football is worse off for losing him.

Dante Pettis breaks NCAA record with ninth career punt return for a touchdown

Why anyone puts to wide receiver anymore is one of this world’s great mysteries. Still, teamsAlisson is frustrated with Liverpool conceding “stupid goals”.The Brazilian was helpless when Trezeguet found himself free inside the box to score Aston Villa’s opener on Sunday. The Reds eventually secured a dramatic late, but Alisson doesn’t want his team to put themselves in difficult positions by conceding poor goals.”It annoys me always when we concede,” Alisson said. “Stupid goals! When we concede that way, it annoys me and the team. “We always have a common goal to win the game and to keep a clean sheet. Class Snapshot: LSU

()

, , (0.9262 average 247Sports Composite Rating)

Running back (New Orleans, La./St. Augustine) is the No. 1 overall prospect in the Class of 2014 according to and thus is the 247Sports Composite National Player of the Year. Fournette is considered to be the best running back prospect since Adrian Peterson.

Definitely at safety. The Tigers have two of the top three prospects in the country committed- both from the state of Texas- in (Mansfield/Timberview) and (Carrollton/Hebron). Paris, who could also be a big cornerback, has already enrolled. Also, (Woodville, Miss./Wilkinson County) and (Hallandale, Fla.) are certainly talented, particularly Battle who the LSU coaches think can be elite.

With a 247Sports Composite rating of 0.8801 (three stars), is undervalued a bit by the recruiting industry. He is instinctive in coverage and will take your head off against the run. It would not be a surprise at all to see him contend for All-SEC honors and possible enjoy a higher-profile career in Baton Rouge than Paris, Adams or Voorhies. Like Paris, Battle could also realistically play cornerback in college.

Five-star wide receiver (River Ridge, La./John Curtis) is the nation’s No. 2 overall prospect at his position and has high athletic upside. Being that he’s in-state and that LSU lost the No. 1 receiver- from New Orleans Edna Carr- to SEC West rival Texas A&M- it would be a big miss if Dupre opted for Alabama, UCLA or even Florida State. The top cornerback prospect in the country, (Gardena, Calif./Serra) has the Tigers in the mix and is ranked higher than Dupre, but Dupre is the “biggest” target that remains. Currently, 247Sports Crystal Ball, which measures recruiting prediction trends from analysts across the country, has for Dupre.

LSU would like to sign a defensive tackle or two down the stretch and has its eye on two good ones. (Hialeah, Fla./Champagnat Catholic) is a former Miami commit who is the No. 3 prospect at his position nationally. The 6-foot-4, 337-pound Valentine was a load at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl and one of the top performers at the event. Another senior year riser also is on LSU’s radar- Ole Mi Bayern Munich coach Niko Kovac was at Goodison Park on Saturday to see Everton thump Chelsea.Everton won 3-1 under caretaker manager Duncan Ferguson – their first game since he dismissal of Marco Silva.Kovac has been out of work since his departure ss commit (Jackson, Miss./Callaway). The 6-foot-3, 270-pound Speaks and the Tigers are pushing the Rebels hard. He will be in Oxford this weekend for an official and then closes out his visits with jaer says Anthony Martial needs to lift his sights.Three goals in his last three games has taken Martial’s tally to 15 in 31 this campaign, with the 24-year-old still getting to grips with his role as No 9 following years on the left-wing.“If you’ra trip to Arkansas on Jan. 31.

Secondary coach is the primary recruiter of record for Paris, Adams, Battle and four-star defensive end/tackle (Plaquemine, La.) and was the secondary recruiter ofstar has taken his game to another level during his two seasons on Merseyside, which culminated in a Champions League final win earlier this month. His performances have reportedly caught the eye of Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane. But Cameroon legend record for Voorhies. Raymond, an LSU alum and native of New Iberia, La., currently ranks and in the 247Sports Recruiter Rankings and could go even higher- he’s the primary on Jackson and Valentine.

Louisville Cardinals at Rutgers Scarlet Knights: Preview, prediction, TV info

Thursday, 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPN)

Winner goes to a BCS bowl. ‘Nuff said.

QB . As is the case in pretty much any game Bridgewater plays in, he will be the besd manager Glenn Hoddle believes that young Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham may be upset with the club’s manager Frank Lampard.Chelsea enjoyed an impressive 1-0 away win against Ajax in the Champions League on Wednesday night. But it was Michy Batshuayi t player on the field. And Thursday night is Bridgewater’s chance to forever etch his name in Cardinals lore. The sophomore will take the field with a fractured left (non-throwing) wrist. He won’t take any snaps from under center and handoffs will be a little shaky, but coach Charlie Strong said Monday that he will go. LB Khaseem Greene. And the man who will be making life miserable for Bridgewater: defensive star Greene. The leading tackler in the Big East, Greene is poised to repeat as Big East defensive player of the year. He leads the league in tackles and Rutgers in tackles for loss (10) and sacks (5). His mission will be to make life hell for Bridgewater and the Louisville running backs, and his effectiveness in this task will be pivotal in determining who wins.

DE . Speaking of people who enjoy destroying opponent’s backfields, Mauldin should be fully healthy Thursday night, coming off a sprained knee (he played Saturday against UConn). Mauldin appeared ready to explode prior to his injury in late October, having just come off being named conference defensive player of the week. If the Louisville defense as a unit can keep Rutgers running back at bay, Mauldin should have the opportunity to tee off on banged up quarterback . RB Jamison. The aforementioned “if” is a big if. The Cardinals’ defense has not had much success containing opposing backs. The Cards have allowed an opposing rusher to go over 100 yards six times — and 90-plus two other times — while Jamison has reached the 100-yard mark six times.

The Big East schedule-makers had to have considered that this game — the final one for both teams — would serve as a de facto Big East title game. And it worked. There hasn’t been a bigger game in the Big East this year. If you have the means, go.

3. This will only be coach Charlie Strong’s third game against a ranked opponent — even if you count Rutgers a ranked opponent (the Scarlet Knights are 25th in the coaches poll). The previous two came at No. 25 Oregon StateThe centre-back came in at the interest in RB Salzburg striker Erling Haaland.Solskjaer has shown just how interested he is in Haaland by sending his ‘personal scout’, Simon Wells, to watch the teenage wonderkid. The Athletic says Solskjaer asked Wells from the club’s recruitment heart of the Eagles defence, and dealt with the pace of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Daniel James like any seasoned pro with his trophy cabinet would.Speaking post-match, Cahill’s delight at the victory and bein in 2010 (L, 35-28) and vs. No. 24 West Virginia in 2011 (W, 38-35).

1. The Scarlet Knights are one win away from their first trip to a BCS bowl and an outright Big East Championship — the first in school history.

Bridgewater’s effectiveness. If Teddy Bridgewater is Teddy Bridgewater, the Cards could hold a slight advantage. If he’s just a shell of his former self — or, worse, Louisville has to look to backup Will Stein — Rutgers should hold a huge advantage. The one caveat, of course, is how effective the Rutgers offense can be. Regardless, the Cardinals need Bridgewater. He is undoubtedly the most important player for either team.

In Miller’s first three games (all Ohio State wins), he has 988 yards running and passing and 12 total touchdowns. Purdue LB Dwayne Beckford arrested, suspended from team

linebacker Dwayne Beckford was suspended indefinitely from the team following his arrest on Monday, according to coach Danny Hope. It wasn’t imer City defender Nicolas Otamendi has assured Valencia he wants to return. The Argentina international has offers from across Europe – and City management aren’t actively seeking to lose him.But the Manchester Evening News says Otamendi is determined mediately clear as of Monday night what prompted Beckford’s arrest but he has had numerous run-ins with the law previously.

From the Journal and Courier:

Tippecanoe County court records show that Beckford was arrested by the West Lafayette Police Department. Details of what led to his arrest were not immediately available Monday night, but Beckford has already been charged in Tippecanoe Superior Court 4 with two counts of possession of paraphernalia and one count of possession of a synthetic drug. One of the counts of possession of paraphernalia charges is a Class D felo1 season. The 31-year-old defender has been at St. James’ Park since 2018.Manager Steve Bruce said: “It’s really good news to get Fede tied up. He has had a great season and richly deserves this recognition.”He is a great professional. He trains and wny because Beckford has at least one other prior conviction for it, from August 2011 in Tippecanoe County.

As of midnight, Beckford was being held on three separate “no bond” warrants. That’s because the Tippecanoe County prosecutor’s office filed paperwork to revoke his probation for a still-open possession of marijuana case, also filed in Superior Court 4. Judge Gregory Donat granted the prosecutor’s request.

“It’s unfortunate that Dwayne allegedly violated some of the terms of his probationary status,” coach Danny Hope said of Beckford’s repeated brushes with the law. “Once we examine all the details that led to today’s development, we will make a decision on his long-term status with the team.”

Mr Hellas Verona and Cremonese defender Wladyslaw Zmuda has urged AC Milan to stick with Krzysztof Piatek. The Poland international is being linked with a move away after suffering a form slide this season. But Zmuda told TMW: “Last year he seemed to goonday’s incident was the fourth time Beckford has been arrested since June 2011. Other incidents include an OWI charge, as well as a misdemeanor failure to stop following a hit-and-run crash. When West Lafayette police followed up with an arrest warrant, officers allegedly smelled marijuana at his apartment.

Beckford alluded to his standing with the team earlier this month at Purdue’s media day. “I have to be on the straight and narrow,” Beckford said to . “[Hope’s] not going to have a choice. You have to take responsibility and don’t take nothing for granted. One day it can be here and the next day it can’t.”

If Beckford, who had 91 tackles — the second most on the Boilermakers — is ultimately dismissed from the team entirely, it would leave a huge hole in the middle of Hope’s defense. Beckford’s backup, Antwon Higgs, had just three tackles last season. The third-stringer is Sean Robinson, a converted quarterback. For more Big Ten coverage, follow Mike Singer and Dave Carey

Patrick Peterson has a message for Richard Sherman: I’m the best

GLENDALE, Ariz. — There were no pockets on his team-issued shorts, but I still made the obligatory big-money joke Wednesday morning that comes with a new contract for cornerback .

“Looks like you’re carrying some extra weight around in those pockets,” I told him.

Peterson played right along.  He reached down and acted as if money was falling out of those pockets onto the floor, and then let out a laugh, the carefree laugh of a player who is now the highest-paid at his position.

“Big contract,” Peterson said. “Very big.”

Wednesday for a reported $70 million, with $48 million guaranteed. That deal makes him the highest-paid corner in the history of the league, something Peterson was quick to say several times Wednesday. The deal exceeds the one given to Seattle’s earlier this year, which was important to Peterson — even if it’s just $10,000 more per season.

“It’s a big deal,” he said about passing Sherman’s deal. “I think I’ve done a lot in my young career to be recognized as not only the best cornerback in the league, and being recognized as the highest-paid cornerback.”

There are those shots again. The Sherman-Peterson rivalry is becoming one of the league’s best. It features two outstanding corners who think they are the best, and both will say it and preach it even on social media. Corners have taken over from receivers as the league divas.

The are becoming legendary. When Peterson tweeted his deal was done Tuesday night, it didn’t take long for the two to get into it.

Peterson tweeted Sherman with this: “Yu mad, bro?” — borrowing asel. The 21-year-old would be available for a cut price fee of close to £7 million.Unai Emery is a fan of the player and knows the signing would fit the Gunners’ limited summer transfer budget. The defender would not be their only defensive addition, from Sherman’s now-famous saying he once aimed at .

Sherman responded with a tweet showing a picture his ring. The caption said: “Can’t ever be too mad. Imao…”

So is this real or not? Is it a public charade aimed at trying to get them both more attention? Are they both playing us? Or do they really have disdain for each other?

I asked Peterson about the feud in a 10-minute sit-down interview.

“I don’t have a problem with him, I don’t have any beef with him,” Peterson said. “I think it’s a friendly, healthy competition. We’re both at the top of our games. We both got huge contracts now. Obviously, he’s one up on me right now winning the championship.”

The interesting thing is the two would text each other before the supposed feud started earlier this year.

“We stopped texting each other,” Peterson said, almost sounding disappointed. ‘There are no hard feelings here at all. At the end of the day, some people take things the wrong way. I don’t have any problem with him. He might have a different opinion. In my opinion, I think it’s a healthy, clean competition between two of the best corners in the league.”

Peterson has been to the Pro Bowl three times in his first three seasons, twice as a corner and once as a return man. He was a first-round pick who came in with a lot of fanfare and a big contract.

Sherman was a fifth-round pick, a converted college receiver who barely made the team as a rookie and had to take the hard way to get to his lofty perch among the league’s best. He seemingly has a chip as huge as the Space Needle on his shoulder because of it. But PetersLiverpool is keeping tabs on Benfica B midfielder David Tavares. The Reds first saw Tavares when they played a friendly in Marbella prior to the Champions League final.O Jogo says the club were impressed by the 20-year-old’s ‘tough tackling’.Tavares has represented Portugal at youth level.on isn’t one to just sit back and cede the honor as the league’s best to anyone — and he will fight to claim what he thinks is his.

So I asked him why he’s better than Sherman? Off Peterson went.

“I think there’s a bunch that goes into being better than him,” Peterson said. “I know I am faster than him. I think my technique is better than his. Longer guys have problems just unlocking their hips He has pretty good ball skills as well. I probably just say my versatility. Just moving around. I am not going to just diminish his skill level because he has great skills.

“My versatility sets us apart. As far as going to the left, going to the slot, going to the right, playing a little safety. A lot of corners don’t like doing that, like moving around, going to the nickel. Guys understand the slot receiver is the hardest guy to guard. You have to guard every route on the route tree. A lot of guys don’t like to do that. Say that on the left, you might go into the game plan saying he runs three routes on the left side. He doesn’t have to guard nothing else but three routes. I have to worry about everything. I have to worry about what he does on the left side. I have to worry about what he does on the right side. I have to worry about what he does in the slot. I have to worry about what he does when he motions. There’s a lot that goes into covering a No. 1 guys. The versatility sets us apart. Some guys are kind of nervous and their knees buckle when it’s time to go inside or go to another side of the field. They’re just comfortable on one side. I am able to do it all. I can do pretty much everything.”

Peterson moves around in coverage a lot more than Sherman, who is usually lined up on the left side — in case you couldn’t tell by the veiled shots lobbed by Peterson.  — in Seattle’s defense. The use more Cover-3 looks, which are their favorite, and that leaves Sherman on the left side a lot, while Peterson moves around a lot more to match up with receivers. That’s part of why many general managers, players and coaches I talked to earlier this year picked Peterson as the best in the NFL.

That got Peterson going again.

“If you are the best corner in the league, if you go down in history with Deion Sanders, , the list goes on … these guys took on the responsibility of taking out the No 1 receiver in the league,” he said. “If you claim you are the best, you should guard the best. I understand it may be a scheme, but at the end of the day if you’re going to try and claim that title go to the D-coordinator and say, ‘I understand we have a scheme here, but I want to take him out of the game.'”

That’s not happening with Seattle coming off a Super Bowl title with the scheme they use to help key the league’s best defense. But that debate opens up this question: If you put Peterson in Seattle’s scheme and Sherman in Arizona’s, who would be better? I say it would be Peterson, as did many of the personnel people I talked with in recent months.

That’s why the Cardinals were willing to give him the deal they did.

“We couldn’t be more pleased to make Patrick the highest-paid player at his position,” team president Michael Bidwill said. “And I agree he’s the best are there for the taking.Juve and Inter face off on Sunday in a game that could decide the Scudetto this season.Moratti said, “Juve are in a season of transition, after a long time with the same coach, and they must find themselves.“We saw it in defensive corner in the league.”

Ali-Frazier. Red Sox-Yankees. Manning-Brady. And now it’s Peterson-Sherman, only this rivalry is playing out for all to see on social media, the new-age way of stoking it and keeping it alive.

“I am having fun with it,” Peterson said. “Sometime he seems like he’s getting salty with it. We have our exchanges over the last month or so, and he’s still exchanging words. I have no hard feelings toward Richard. I wish him the best. I guess it will be must-watch TV when we play Seattle.”

We can hardly wait.
